About every single free-roam game I don't do missions, I just free-roam with the mentality "screw the system! I have weapons!" (GTA4, Red faction, farcry 2, fallout 3, ect..)

And I took it step further in portal as I didn't even figure out the "missile+portal+glass=hooray!" for about an hour...

When I was very young and used to play racing games, I assumed that getting a higher number was better. Therefore I always aimed to get 12th place.

I was a problem child.
In my maths exam, there was golf scorecard and you had to add up the scores and say who won. How was I to know that more points is a bad thing? I'd never played or watched golf. I was six.

I felt cheated by the examiner's prejudice against kids who don't know the rules of golf.

On the final boss of Assassin's Creed, I just did a hidden blade counter and won immediately. Apparently I'm not supposed to do that.

In TF2, I used to charge in with a medic and try to kill people with the syringe gun. It worked, but everyone hated me for it.

Oh, and when I played starcraft for my first time, I decided that it was a good idea to just make SCVs only. SCV vs carriers... ah memories.

In Splinter Cell I would just run through the game and blast shit up until me brother taught me stealth was better. Lol. And Pokemon I would get all the Legends from all the generations and trade all the legendary's to one game pack that I started a new game on. Needless to say, all my Pokemon ignored me.

On a non-lethal run of Deus Ex I realised I had been using ordinary darts in my crossbow for half the game. "Oh... bugger. I was wondering why those guys seemed to have developed some resistance to the tranquiliser."

i remember in portal after you encounter your first rocket turret there's a hole (slightly to high) to crawl through.

and i think i had to think of something clever. instead i stacked computers and chairs to climb up to it.
That's exactly what I did.

Attempting to make an extremely long jump on Metroid Prime 3, with the Screw Attack. I almost made it, but I was short maybe 2-3 feet of the platform. There was nothing underneath me. Took me like 10 tries to make that epic jump, only to find out I never had to make that jump in the first place. I V8 slapped myself right before I facepalmed.

I'm currently playing a new game of fallout3.

Very hard mode with all my skill points on unarmed.
That's right, unarmed on very hard.

Although, it is the most fun I've ever had with that game.
You're only doing it wrong if you use any weapon other than the Death Claw Glove. It shreds power armor like paper.

I've recently downloaded Deus Ex and apparently I'm playing it wrong because I can't even get past the fucking first level.
I do believe I am a Deus Ex Master.
Tell me what's wrong son?

OT: Any fighting game (Like SSB, Mortal Combat etc) before I learnt how to play them properly, I'd smash buttons.
Is there any other way to play "Mortal Kombat"? I once accidentally gave somebody a triple-decapitation.

Any single-player RTS game is when I automatically look for the most glaring failures of computer AI, and exploit them mercilessly. If the computer units can be decoyed into running into a blank wall and just staying there instead of finding a way around, that's when I'll use the most powerful area attack I have.

The very first time I played Final Fantasy was the PC version of FFVII (which I have long since lost). I had no sense of "grinding" at the time and consistently got whalloped by one early boss until I got fed up and never tried the game again (not helped by me losing the discs).

I still don't understand how the duels work in Red Dead Redemption, and I've finished the game.

I won them through attrition and luck.

Stupid Rockstar and their old habit of putting up tiny tutorial messages while you're trying to concentrate on playing.

Back in my younger video gaming days, I used to actually try to solve the puzzles. Anyone who knows me knows that I am probably the worst person on the planet to ask for help on puzzles. Usually it takes me like 30 minutes to figure out what I'm supposed to do, only after I FUBAR'd the puzzle.

Like those hacking mini-games in BioShock, it got so frustrating that I just starting blowing up every turret I saw. Probably not what the developer intended, but oh well. Now a days, I just press random things until something happens. So ya, not much has changed.

The first time my brother and I played RE5, we were still used to RE4's controls, so we died a number of embarrassing ways trying to get used to them. One time we died I ran out of ammo and resorted to my knife. I ended up getting the trophy for killing 5 enemies with the knife. Unfortunately since this was my first PS3 game, I wasn't expecting it and the "ding" sound that plays when you get a trophy distracted me long enough for an enemy to kill me.

All the time. Apparently its not a good idea to play TEAM fortress not as a team. It also helps to know what the different classes do, which I do not. Run and gun as an Engineer did not work very well.
I tried running and gunning as an engineer once and it actually worked surprisingly well. I got three kills before dying. That shotgun is not to be underestimated.
An offensive Engie can actually be quite good, I use to run and gun with him too, and place level 1 Sentries around corners for a few ambush kills.
