I played Pokemon Crystal by only using the grass starter. Sure, I caught other pokemon, but they went unused.

I had a level 100 Meganium to defeat the Elite Four by itself.

In Red Dead Redemption my brain completely ceased to function when it came to breaking horses. I'd got up to the mission for Uncle to break some horses; and I just could not do it. I'd had serious trouble the entire game when trying to break a horse.

In a moment of clarity (read: retardedness abated) I realised that I'd been using RS and not LS to balance myself. In my defence I'd argue that any game that has a mechanic where only one stick is used it's always the right one, a majority of people are right handed after all. But yeah, I'm stupid.

A final point; I'd got that far in the game, having done the breaking mission for Bonnie and caught two wild horses or so for myself without, apparently, doing a damned thing.

It's probably why I can't stand more than an hour of Sim City 4 at once. Oh well.

There have been times where by my movements I have entrangled the combine so that they stand still while I shoot them.

The mission in Modern Warefare 2 where you have to hide in the forest with price. I would rush out and get killed by guards, dogs, or falling trees.

i remember in portal after you encounter your first rocket turret there's a hole (slightly to high) to crawl through.

and i think i had to think of something clever. instead i stacked computers and chairs to climb up to it.
LoL, I did the same, just dragged a chair from the office thing, didn't even notice the cubes above me :p

At the time I thought there must be a better way, but it worked

I started playing The Darkness and sucked at it.

Then my friend came over to play it, and started shooting the lights.

I was just like "OF COURSE! IM SO STUPID!"

I did that too! I still pile a couple of carefully-stacked office chairs there to get out. I'm not sure what the "correct" method of escape is...
There's a vacuum tube above your head that the weighted storage cubes get sucked through. If you position a portal so the turret fires at the tube, the glass will shatter and a cube will fall out.

Took me 2 or 3 playthroughs to figure it out though.

I played through Dragon Age Origins twice before even once changing my support charecters' tactics or switching to them to do anything other than pick locks, when I finally did start messing around with tactics on my third playthrough, crap got a hell of a lot easier.

I played Oblivion as a pure archer. No poison, no magic/sword backup skill. DID NOT END WELL.

I played Morrowind as a not-warrior.

I tried Fallout 3 without Small Guns, Lockpicking, or Science.

Tried playing Baldur's Gate 2 and game of that ilk without pausing never goes well for me. Trying to play BG2 with out playing BG1 is way to confusing for me.

I was level 10 in oblivion before I found out you could fast travel.
Also, There were multiple times in HL2 when I didn't notice a ladder and piled up crap to continue.

Sounds like everyone got that wrong at some point. XD
I found it out threw a fluke when I was randomly firing portals.

Hmmm, when I played Dragon Age: origins, I never used the spacebar. Except for a few times, I would forget about pausing, and try jumping.

At some point, I hit upon the really interesting realization that it's really easy to play a game wrong.

Basically, what happens is this: you play a similar kind of game and develop habits to play a game that way that leads to you not playing the next game properly.

For example, lets say you play a lot of MMORPGs, you learn you should just sit there and soak damage while the mob beats you up because that's how the MMORPGs are generally developed. Then you go and play City of Heroes and find it to be a really boring, derivative experience because you don't realize it's actually a game developed with the idea that you would be able to use factors such as cover and z coordinate elevation, and that healing isn't so much required, and so on.

That. I did it on all my Portal playthroughs.
I still don't know how you actually are supposed to get through that hole without the loveable Aperture chair. <3
