Did you know?... The Uncharted games do not feature regenerating health.

According to the devs, Nathan Drake never takes bullet damage [https://www.cnet.com/news/uncharteds-developers-just-revealed-a-bizarre-secret-about-nathan-drake/]. When the screen gets red/loses color to signal "damage", it's actually Drake's luck getting low, not his health.

*shrug* Sure? I guess.

They stole the idea from an ancient D&D panel (IIRC) (although that never quite jived with the whole healing magic thing).

I'd toss it on the heap of "Things that only make your game dumber for explaining them" alongside such luminaries as the "I've activated the combat performance appraisal system in your armour" in Doom'16 trying to explain upgrade points for doing challenges.

Like, you're taking an accepted bit of gamey suspension of disbelief. Then trying to give it this weird in universe explanation. And now your character is some kind of magic luck pixie, but his luck only applies to avoiding things hitting him that are being wielded by other people. Does he sit down to play a game of cards too and suddenly his vision starts blurring and going red before the dealer flips a blackjack?

That?s an interesting take on damage (or no damage). But I wonder how they?d explain melee damage where Nate is clearly getting clocked...or is he? Maybe it?s like the movies there too where they?re whiffing you, until one final swing connects.

In any case, it would seem that Nate is a glass jaw due to having a one-shot level of vitality. It makes me want to replayed them just to see what I was missing. IIRC, he doesn?t actually react to any perceived ?damage?, so that would make sense here.

that can say about any other game. its regen health. a casual feature and they are covering it to justify regen health.

That honestly would have been a great addition to the games. I'd loved to have seen that scene in one of them

I remember reading that interpretation (on damage-in-shooters in general) either in an Extra Punctuation or a dedicated thread somebody made some years ago. Neat concept but doesn't Drake explicitly take bullet damage, like you see the actual blood burst where he's shot? And if you're going for "luck running out" mechanic why would you mimic the default style for "is getting shot"?

They're still deeply frustrating games.
Personally, out of the numbered releases, I only found Uncharted 2 to be a good game.

Vanquish is the most hardcore single player shooter and it has functionally health regen but also isn't technically health regen. Gameplay elements/mechanics aren't inherently casual/hardcore by themselves but in how they are used.

I wouldn't know offhand as I'm not a huge Uncharted fan (only 1 of them is actually good IMO) but according to the devs Drake never actually gets hit until the kill-shot.

I played through the first one and it was just a slog. The shooting/cover mechanics were terrible and the AI seemed to have perfect accuracy. Made getting through any level just a chore. I couldn't continue the series or recommend it.

Uncharted 1 is basically just a tech demo vs a fully formed game. I never got how it got such good reviews, I played it on release and thought it sucked so it's not because it aged poorly (which it did too). I even remember little details like how shit the AI was, you'd cross an imaginary line in a level and every enemy started shooting. There weren't any set-pieces or good level design at all, you had those awful jet ski sequences. Enemies were such bullet sponges that automatics were worse than pistols actually because headshots were all that matter if you weren't using a power weapon. The game was probably more "whack-a-mole-y" than any cover shooter I've ever played. Uncharted 2 though is a blast (the demo convinced me to play it actually), lots of set-pieces and different encounters to keep the standard gameplay as fresh as possible. They fixed the bullet spongy enemies. The story and characters were a lot of fun. Uncharted 3 is just such a mess of a story, characters doing the opposite of what was already established, plus throwing in unneeded Arkham combat sections. Uncharted 4 was just boring (so much climbing) and came off as a poor-mans Metal Gear in a sense with open levels allowing for stealth but it was all rather lackluster in comparison to other games that do something similar while removing the set-pieces that make it Uncharted.

I read that earlier.

I thought it was kind of neat but ultimately kind of like...whatever. Whether you call it healing or luck or whatever other reason you want to give it, it's ultimately the same thing; I get shot and I need to hide for a few seconds so that I don't get killed.

Keep making awesome games Naughty Dog, that's all I care about.

With this in mind you only have to ignore a couple of things in Drake's Fortune:

1) Drake pushes a rock that would require a couple of people with levers.
2) Elena has unlimited ammo for that grenade launcher.
3) "Getting hit by a grenade". Seems beyond lucky to shrug off one exploding next to you.

Otherwise it's stuff that a human - extremely lucky, skilled, and fit human - could do. It's Among Thieves that brakes the Drake. In one part of the game you drag that wounded cameraman through a warzone with everyone shooting at you. At Crushing difficulty I found out you - as Drake - must use the cameraman as a meatshield so you won't get "hit" yourself. Basically, every time a group of enemies appears you turn your wounded buddy to face them. Talk about luck!

Took me an hour of frustration to figure out that shooting Guardians with the AK-47 was completely useless, as unloading two full magazines into one wouldn't kill it. The pistol did the work.

I always figured this was the case anyway. I'm sure in universe, Nate doesn't consistently get riddled with bullets and repeatedly fall from leg-snapping heights, only to respawn. I figured the 'canon' version of events is Nate only ever getting hit/shot/stabbed in cutscenes.

It's just a mechanic.

Sounds a lot like one of the explanations for health points in tabletop Dungeons & Dragons.

Having more HP as you level up doesn't represent an increased ability to take damage, but your skill at avoiding it and turning otherwise debilitating blows into glancing ones. Minor cuts or bruises. Getting reduced to 0HP represents you finally getting hit in a way that puts you down for the count (though not necessarily killed).
