So, just beat RE6 and watched the 'secret' ending. For all of those who are hoping that Resident Evil will go back to it's roots...well...the ending heavily implies that
Jake Wesker (Yes, he dropped Muller and went with being a Wesker in his own ending)
will be the protagonist in the next RE game. So that's not going to happen. Actually, it'll probably go even more action-y than RE6, just because of that.

Just sayian. Feel free to lose your shit in pure unadulterated rage.

Well, I can't say it pisses me off. I'm into Resident Evil for the story, not clunky controls or lack of ammo. If all the series was like that, I'd never be in the mood to play any installment but 2. Story-wise, I think the series was headed this way since Veronica.

What happened in Veronica that made you think the series would turn into a glorified game of Counter-Strike? (Not that that's a bad thing, but it's totally true.)

Counter-strike? Either a bad joke or lack of FPS (and TPS) experience. Totally true? I'll let you judge post-comment.

Veronica added action mechanics, brighter scenery, a more globally-focused story, wide variety of non-zombie BOWs(which 2 had also, "zombie game" my ass), and Chris being a commando here to kill every already-dead thing in sight. Then there were the super-powered villains. T-Wesker and Alexia, more specifically. It wasn't til Veronica that the story became about specifically stopping Wesker from instigating World War Z.

Captcha: you're welcome

That wasn't a 'OMG COD CLONE' comment. For the past 5~ iterations of Resident Evil, it's been CT's (BSAA/FSS) vs T's (Neo-Umbrella, FBC, Western Slav Republic, etc) whereas earlier entries were about small groups of survivors fighting against the Umbrella corporation.

I'm pretty disappointed by the BSAA though.
From the hundreds of soldiers that we saw throughout the game, only ONE BSAA operative survived...that being Chris. Who said that he was going to retire. I thought that guy at the end of Leon's story (who brought the truck) was going to survive...BUT NOPE. Also there were those two idiots that Leon and Helena ran into..'HEY, LET'S JUMP OUT OF THE PERFECTLY SAFE HELICOPTER AND SHOOT ZOMBIES THAT ARE IN NO WAY A THREAT TO ANYONE UNTIL WE GET HIT BY THE GIANT WALL OF RUBBLE COMING STRAIGHT AT US.'

They needed a secret ending to reveal RE was going even more the action route?

Good thing they did otherwise I would've never known.

You know that ?unadulterated rage? you are talking about requires that I give a crap. And in regards of Resident Evil I gave up all hope long ago.
So yea Capcom do whatever you want.

I don't really care in the grand scheme of things, RE has gone to shit, it isn't the first series to do so and it won't be the last.

The main reason I've been keeping tabs on the discussion is out of the blind hope that I'm missing some good aspect that those who like the game have noticed.

Co-op fun aside, I've seen nothing to change my opinion that overall it's a crappy game that others are able to muddle though to enjoy the story.

Do you guys really need implications by this point?

Even Capcom doesn't delude itself anymore and makes action games that will sell a ton to that certain demographic. Who cares about critical acclaim when you have a popular brand name that is also supported by a film series that has reached its fifth instalment and is still popular?

Though i agree that it draws a bleak future for the industry.

Yes, a bleak future involving making millions of dollars. Nothing bleaker than getting cash.

And in thee first 3 games it was Umbrella creating BOWs to someday sell to governments, then Wesker deciding to sabotage the operation for his own purpose, which the later games expand on. It ties together, and anyone who bothered speculating could see it would go this way plot-wise. As for gameplay, you could only compare the game to Gears of War if you squint really hard. And forget that RE4 came out before Gears.

Spencer only wanted to sell the BOWs on the black market to fund his own research, which was to find the secret to immortality. He did eventually discover how to become immortal, but Alex Wesker stole all of the research and materials before dropping off the face of the earth shortly before Albert Wesker killed Spencer.

I never said that the BOW tech falling into extremist group's hands wasn't a foregone conclusion, tho'.

I'm sorry, but for me anyway, Resi hasn't been survival horror since around the timeLeon was talking to a Spanish midget, this feeling was solidified when RE5 had little to do with survival and even less to do with horror...

It's not a good thing RE is changing so much but it's not as big a leap as y'all seem to think...

So what you're trying to tell me is that the ending to RE6 suggests the series is going to turn into Devil May Cry? Essentially the thing Mikami avoided last decade. The lack of directorial vision is clear.

Methinks Jim said it best in todays Jimquisition.

Capcom's shareholders want RE to stay relevant so they order the game made to appeal to as many people as possible.

So now most of the games are going to be action-oriented instead since 6 seems to have kicked off the winter season of videogame sales with some 4.5m copies shipped.

Might still get the occasional spinoff, or Capcom's shareholders realise that the RE brand is more powerful than they think, or i buy my way into Capcom's shareholders and play the crazed lunatic until we get at least one Monster Hunter and a horror-type RE on a regular basis.

Now that you mention it...the ending did remind me a lot of DMC. Couldn't put my finger on it at the time, but...can now.

It's kind of impossible for RE to go full on horror anymore, simply because the story will not allow it unless they want to pull an Outbreak or Gun Survivor and focus on an entirely new cast with possible cameos of the original cast. (Actually, considering how quickly they're aging everyone up, that might happen anyway considering that Ada, Leon, and Chris are pushing 40 in RE6- Leon was 22-27 in RE2, dunno about the others. Jake (and to a lesser extent Sherry) seem to be heading the 'new generation' of RE...but both of them have explicit super powers, with Jake's Wesker gene and C-Virus enhanced body alongside Sherry's regeneration and G-Virus enhanced body.
