How could even do a western version of Death Note? Ryuks appearance is a bit too wierd for american audiences.

OH great... another good anime ruined by a western director. It's bad enough with the English dub -.- now this. If white guys are playing the characters eff that. But guess you gotta give everyone a chance right? =/

If this is anything like the so called leaked script premise I saw, this isn't good.

Considering their last names were changed for pointless reasons, Ryuk is never mentioned, and Light is supposedly doing it to find his mother's killer.

I have a sickly feeling in the pit of my stomach that Keanu will star in it for some reason. Not to mention there will be a big tittied, blonde love interest. And of course, Sam Jackson will be screaming at someone.

Wasn't that what Misa was? Well, not so much a love interest as a tool I guess. And as horrible as this movie will most likely be as long as there is a I'll take this potato chip and eat it scene i'll probably watch it.

I think this would be perfect. Death Note would be a great way to test the waters in the states to see if an anime laced with Japanese mythology can go mainstream and open the door for other anime based movies (Hellsing anyone?). or at least I would say that if this movie hasn't been in and out of development hell around 4 times now.
PS. did the guy writing that article ever even read or see Death Note? The main character is Light not Kira (Kira is the name given by the public), and it's a Shounen series meaning that it is no where near the "darkest" series in Japan

If they decided to do a straight adaptation of the anime, it would be a pretty original concept that would have potential of holding up quite well I think. However, there was already a live action Deathnote movie, and it was pretty good. Well the first one was only okay, but I really liked the second one. Plus the show's director made a special cut that turned the anime into a feature film, and it holds up incredibly well despite how much material they had to gut. So what's the point? This isn't a story that needs to be remade to death, even if a majority of American audiences haven't seen it.

no no no no no no no!!! leave it alone! it has already been made into 2 films, and quite frankly there is no reason to change anything.

this is why we can't have nice things...

I think it got promise, unless the script is a lot like to one here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.152799-American-Death-Note-Script-This-has-a-decent-discussion#3653768] >.>
If it's not, then it might be okay. I think it can actually be done.

The films were really good, why do they have to ruin everything, Let the right one in was amazing in swedish and from what i hear they completely ruined it (i couldn't bear to watch the remake in case it was awful)

Wait, there's already a feature film in Japan? Then what's the point?

I'm starting to get the sense that Hollywood has a big ego. It's the only logical explanation...

"What's that? There's already a 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' movie, with subtitles, that was released in theaters here in the States? Naw, naw, that's no good, we'll do it better-- with teh English voices!!! :D"

That's you, Hollywood. That's how dumb you sound.

I was actaully pretty happy when I heard about this. Just a couple concerns, those being

1. There's a of story to pack into one movie, not too sure about it.
2. If the CGI used is even remotely bad, it'll ruin the movie (for me at least)

But the proposed director is pretty solid (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was good)

I'm lost between fangirl squee and nerd rage.

On one hand, anything where I get to see Light's sexy evilness take hold on the screen is a good thing. And if he can make the epic battle between Light and Near as compelling as the show...well...I call first seats.

On the other...it requires a DAMNED good director or it will end up like TLA or Dragonball. (My pride as a cartoon lover can only take so many hits and I'm down to one.) That's not easy to come by and my incredible movie (OMG IT'S PERFECTION ONCE IN A DAMNED CENTURY) quota was filled with TS3 and Tangled. I'd be happy to make space though.

And that horrible script has to be nonsense. Right? 'crickets chirping' Right?! 'crickets chir--sound of gun fire'

'sulks in corner''fangirl squee''sulks in corner'

However, I would accept Zac Efron as Light...naw screw that. Pls be Asian kthx.
