He is considered great becuase he is the first/only president to have to deal with a civil War. Many people belive that he handeled the country better then most men would have given the situation and that is why we consider him great.
I think you kinda misunderstood what I was just trying to say that it was mainly about a state's rights about what stuff the goverment could do and what it couldn't.
