I need new friends, seriously, this is like the 6th time this year I've either been called a racist, sexist, or some other -ist.

This time it was a throw away comment about how much I detest foreign call centres. Out came the "You Racist!" claws and arguments started (seriously it's always the same chick... I've gotta stop hanging out with her boyfriend before I start considering jail not so bad). I tried to articulate my argument but I wasn't given a chance to fully explain my point of view before I'd been dismissed as a racist scum bag one day short of signing up for the KKK.

So I've gotta get my point of view out before I explode. I as I tried to tell my friends yes, I detest foreign call centres, but it's on a practical level, not a racial one, it's a simple of fact of life. It's hard to freaking understand people with different accents when all you've got is bad quality VOIP lines.

Human interaction is built around multiple skill sets, that's how we evolved, everything from posture, to hand movements, to voice tone, to facial expressions is how we communicate. If you're communicating with a person speaking with a thick accent you can generally get the gist based on other factors, how they are standing, the expression on their face, etc. often without conscious effort, it's just something that happens in your brain.

I can personally attest to this, I use to work in retail in a port city, we would often get people coming into the shop fresh off some boat or ship looking for something, and it wasn't that hard to communicate with them once you could look them in the eye.

However when you start removing other factors and boil it down to just the voice it becomes that much harder, leading to frustration with the person you're trying to communicate with. So when I say foreign call centres are a stupid idea and people with thick accents shouldn't man phones it has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the fact when you've only got one means of communications you shouldn't complicate it.

Hell I haven't got a good phone voice for dealing with people, I've got a thick broad Australian accent, think Bob Hawke or Paul Hogan, I've got manners, but the fact remains I understand that I wouldn't be very easy to understand on the phone to people without experience with my accent. It was bad enough dealing with people on vent/etc during games as they'd often have to get me to repeat something slower as they couldn't understand a word I said.

I don't take offence to that, I accept it and move on...

So I feel better having typed that up... do you agree with my point of view or do you think I should be fitted for a white hood?

First off, ditch your friends. Not only are friends overrated, you can get new ones or do without them altogether.

Secondly, tl;dr, but wanting to talk to someone with a solid grasp of english doesn't make you racist. It'd be like a guy in mexico having to talk to someone in norway, the difference in accent will sometimes make things difficult.

Thirdly, I read an article where they're trying to make it so if you have to call a foreign call center, you can request to be redirected to an american call center, but last I saw snopes hadn't confirmed it.

My dad works in American Airlines Advantage (the sky miles department, based in Texas) and he gets thanked daily for being an American answering the phone and solving problems for an American company.

You're not being racist. Whoever that ***** is crying racism needs a good slap upside the head.

I personally find it insulting that every time I make a joke about Irishmen drinking like fishes, I get labeled a racist pig, when I infact am Irish. People now a days need to learn to take a fucking joke, whereas in your case you weren't even being racist in the slightest.

How exactly did you word it?

Get some racist friends.

They'd never call you racist.

They'd probably say "Stop being so not-racist!"

Would solve everything.

The insult of racism is so overused anymore that it is really losing it's touch. Much like calling somebody a "nazi" it is now a meaningless pejorative. Regardless of the person being a nazi or not, it doesn't matter. It's a meaningless insult done by people who really can't think of anything better to say.

Not a crazed gunman dad racist.

You want to understand the person your talking with. Thats not racist.

This is why political correctness needs to die. It throws up far more barriers than it takes down.

If I wasn't so sobre I'd kick your ass!.. also something clever about whiskey.

OT: I was once having a conversation with a friend of mine before a class (I think might have been at lunch) and for whatever reason we were talking about diseases and conditions that are endemic in cultural (Hasidic Jews having a much higher occurence of Tasacs) and racial groups (Diabetes is more common in non-caucasian people) and one harpy started decrying us for racial intolerence.

An english speaking call center...geez we're living with our head in the clouds now. You are no racist friend. The tw*t that called you racist needs to understand the meaning of the word before doling it out. I don't remember the last time I had a true english speaking call center, and while most companies have gone that way it sucks talking to "Charles" on the line and "Charles" can't even pronounce his own name. I think we all have issues with this and not only should this chick get off her high horse but companies need to stop trying to save a buck and hire english speaking(american or non) people to handle english speaking callers. Chinese companies don't hire english speaking call center employees because we don't speak friggin chinese.

Tell me about it, I had a long conversation with someone from blizzard about battle.net
To make a long story short, he had an accent that seemed to be a mix of scottish, irish and bad south-african.

Oh, it's dead. Not many things do survive a well placed NUKE. Not my fault, just saying they don't.

Moving on: I know racist people, in this place I live it is easy to tell who is who, but really, that girl is just going mad, and you are not a racist. So don't fear, and get away from that girl, she will murder your public reputation with a sweeping, overly PC vengeance.

Race, Religion, and Sexuality are three subjects which people, for some reason, will avoid in conversation as though the merest mention of the fact that someone is declining a meal you've cooked for them on religious grounds is offensive to the chef (or whatever. It's just one example) instantly makes you a Nazi.

The other thing that annoys me is the way that people constantly preface any statement about these three subjects with "now don't get me wrong. I've got absolutely no problem with Muslims/Asians/Gays, and in fact, some of my best friends are bisexual Catholics from the West Indies". NO-ONE ACCUSED YOU OF THAT! Instead, you chose to cower behind a veil of fear of the societal outrage that might be levelled at you if you mention anything remotely offensive to someone different to you.
