Best news I've heard in ages personally.

Star Wars was already fucked beyond recognition and basically worthless to me past the theatrical release of the OT. Them (Lucas) finally giving it up to other people might finally reboot it into something worthwhile, as it is the best parts of Star Wars for years has been all the things other people have done with it.

Hey wait, doesn't this mean that Disney also owns the rights to Indiana Jones and the canceled Monkey Island film?
No to Indiana Jones. Paramount still has partial rights for the franchise and so anything related to that could not be transferred to Disney at this time. Although it could go to Disney when the contract ends with Paramount.

Unknown about Monkey Island, it was probably not part of the deal, but you never know.

Also Disney seem very excited about wanting more Star Wars based theme park attractions, possibly a theme park dedicated to Star Wars, but that was not mentioned in the press videos.

So Lucas got 2 billions in cash? I guess he is going to make more mediocre films with it.
Dysney just became Eidos, a all sucking and destroying whirpool of crap death

So, Episode 7?

Wait, if this continues off of episode 6...

Does this mean we get see the Thrawn campaign?

And if they do the traditional set of 3 movies...Yuuhzan Vong war?

I'd love to see some material done that wasn't meant to be so epic in the star wars universe, not that the epic films would be bad, but there just seems to be so many possibilities with the universe opening up.

I kind of hope they ignore the books, ignore the mediclorians or whatever their called, and go back to strong character development with an over arching story in the background that the characters may or may not get mixed up in. I think that is what made the originals so awesome, kind of like what Joss did with Firefly.

That's nice.

Yep, I really have nothing more to say. The worst that can happen is George Lucas losing control over the franchise, which...isn't exactly heartbreaking. That and everyone freaked over Disney acquiring Marvel, and not a single one of their fears came true (save Spectacular Spider-Man being replaced by a drastically inferior show). It's not worth worrying about.

Now, more seriously. Why? Why Episode 7? What is the point? As much as people tend to hate the prequels, the saga as it currently stands tells one consistent story: the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. The story is done, there's no need for more films. What would be gained by adding to that?

Oh wait, I forgot. Money. As if The Avengers didn't earn Disney enough.
What could be gained? I don't know, maybe new stories that add to the lore of Star Wars. At this point I thought it'd be obvious to everyone that Star Wars isn't just about the original and prequel movies. Given all the video games, comics, and novels out there I think its been proven there can be stories that go beyond the tale of Anakin Skywalker and expand upon the massive universe that is Star Wars.

Anyway...WOW talk about coming straight out of left field. I must admit I never though I'd see the another Star Wars trilogy in my lifetime.

Given how the Marvel films, especially the Avengers, have been good or at least enjoyable I am currently optimistic about this, though cautiously. I most say though I don't envy whoever the writers are going to be. Given the size of the Star Wars extended universe, writing an original story that doesn't kick continuity to the curb has got to be nightmare. And even if they do just decide to adapt a novel trilogy, it sure as hell won't be an easy task.

No to Indiana Jones.
The agreement states that Disney gets the rights to the property and all future installments of the Indiana Jones franchise (probably the same as the SW agreement - all upcoming Indy films will bear the Disney logo).

Not gonna lie, kind of ok with this. Lucas always wanted Star Wars sequels beyond episode 6 to be made by a series of different directors and minds anyway. I see this kind of as creative fulfilment.

Spider-Man films aren't owned nor made by marvel nor Disney. They're owned by Sony and Spider-Man is literally owned by marvel by name alone.

On the one hand, you've got George Lucas, the man who has spent the last twenty years systematically destroying his own magnum opus. And on the other hand you have the single most bloated and evil corporation in the entire entertainment industry.

No, not because they brought us Hannah Montana. No, not because when mocked by Pixar they responded by BUYING Pixar. Not because of the way they treat their employees at the theme parks. Not because Lion King was totally a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion. Not because The Little Mermaid is a bland protagonist with no obvious motivation who sacrifices everything for a man she just met and learns nothing, and yet is held up as a positive role model for young women. It's not even because they actively persecute their own fans for the heinous crime of creating fan-art.

No, I have an objective reason for hating on Disney.

It's because they have repeatedly and single-handedly warped U.S. copyright law to prevent Mickey Mouse from passing into the Public Domain.

As a SIDE-EFFECT of this desperate manipulation of public policy, Public Domain in the United States is effectively frozen at the year 1923, and will remain this way for as long as Disney money and Disney lawyers are allowed to continue to manipulating Congress. It doesn't even matter that Disney hasn't made any money off of a Mickey Mouse cartoon in like 30 years. They're just hanging onto the copyright until the end of time because IP-hoarding is regarded as an indispensable part of their business model. If that holds back progress and harms American culture in the long run, so be it!

Disney IS the evil Empire.

But since Georgie was Darth Vader, I guess it's a wash.

Oh. Unless you write Star Wars fan fiction. Or maintain Wookiepedia. Or post humorous videos to the internet wearing a Darth Vader costume. Man, those guys are SCREWED!

Oh, that reminds me. When's the next Space Janitors coming out?

OT: im wondering how they plan to do a movie will the old cast return?
They've announced that they'll be making Episode 7, 8 and 9. So that sounds very much like sequels rather than a reboot, and may well involve all new characters.

So Lucas raped his own franchise... now there'll be princesses raping it too.
The Avengers turned out just fine. *shrug*

OT: This seems like a positive thing to me. Disney may well make one actually good film (good director, talented cast, etc.) while they re-establish the brand. After that it'll probably go downhill (Pirates of the Caribbean style) but I'm not the sort of person who gets annoyed just because a bad film exists.

I'll take my one decent Star Wars film and treasure it. Fingers crossed for 2015.

First thought...

Darth Vader in Mickey Mouse ears, throughout Original Saga...

But in all seriousness, I am excited and scared.

More Star Wars movies! More Indiana Jones movies, cos I would love to see a fourth one come out! Decent Star Wars Games!

But, this is Disney... and I am hoping the go for two audiences. 'Mature Audience' being the fans who have seen the original movies when they came out years ago, and the 'Younger Audience' being the reason why Jar Jar was created....

first of all. didn't they kind of sort of already do that. i mean in Disney land Europe there's an entire area set of as Disney star wars where Micky is Luke, Donald is Han, Minnie is leia, goofy is obi wan and stitch is the emperor (yeah i was pissed over that too) shouldn''t there be some lawsuit here.

Disney might make Star Wars good again!
i honestly wouldn't count on it. the star wars franchise have been so raped (there really aren't any other word in the English language the "raped" that defines the franchise now) that it will be hard to recover. sure kids are going to buy it. i mean kids are stupid. they don't see quality. the series will continue til we finally face doomsday but all the quality and grace of star wars died around 7 years ago.

I... This might just be the thing that Lucasfilm needs. No George at the helm for a new episode, maybe the original cuts released on DVD? Colour me cautiously optimistic.
