http://www.deadline.com/2013/02/disney-to-release-additional-films-based-on-star-wars-characters/

CEO Bob Iger made the disclosure in an interview on CNBC. He says that Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on them ? Deadline revealed exclusively back in November that they were getting involved ? and they?re in addition to Disney?s planned Star Wars VII, VIII and IX ? the first of which is being penned by Michael Arndt and directed by JJ Abrams. No word yet on which characters are involved in the spinoff films. Kasdan of course wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, and Kinberg?s franchise credits include X-Men.
So it seems we will have more than just the Sequels to watch for. Rumors include Zack Snyder's Seven Samurai Star Wars, a Yoda film, and Joe Johnston expressing interest in doing a Boba Fett film.

Not that I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, but I would honestly like it if they just, I don't know, created some new characters instead of just squeezing out the old ones.

A Yoda film really makes me shudder. Since I reckon it'll undoubtably be the lightsaber wiekding ninja Yoda from the prequels. Ugh...

And the the more you expose Boba Fett the worse he gets.

What's wrong with lightsaber Yoda? He's a Jedi knight just the same as the rest. Of course he's going to have a lightsaber and use it when he has to.

In other news...eh. I'm not really enough into Star Wars to feel greatly one way or the other. I wasn't a fan of the prequels (Anakin's acting bothered me), but maybe this will be something different. I can't say it'll be better, but it will be different. And it's not like they can get anything out of Luke or Anakin, so for VII, VIII, and IX unless they follow Han and Lea's kids or something they're going to have to come up with a new main character.

Let's just hope we don't get another Jar Jar.

We need republic commando movies OR old republic. Maybe Kyle Katarn. Something from the extended universe, not just jedi from 1 to 6 again

Its about to get edgy up in this thread.

I trust disney with this, They proved they could run a trilogy with Pirates of the Black Pearl Deadman's Chest Davey Jones Adventure 2: Electric Boogaloo.

I more excited about this than I am about the sequel trilogy. The good things about Star Wars are expanded universe (and that 7 samurai thing sounds amazing) and hopefully they're really going to embrace that concept (although it's a shame they're destroying so much of it first)

I dunno. The man got eaten by the Galactic Sphincter of Doom; he really has nowhere to go but up.

With you against the Yoda film, though; he's a much better mentor figure than badass Jedi Knight.

OT: I hope they write a spinoff of Mon Mothma; she's the only woman in the original trilogy that wasn't a slave at some point. Or maybe, "Lando: Last of the Black People."

They are also going to create spinning spin-offs! Ever wanted to see Yoda duke it out with Darth Sidious while the screen was spinning?! Well now's your chance!

And that's the issue I kind of have; Apparently now, Force=lightsaber. In the originals Yoda didn't really seem to give a shit about lightsabers and neither did the Emperor. They were masters of the Force who had no use for lightsabers.

The whole concept behind Yoda was that he wasn't some great badass warrior, but still a Jedi master despite his size and lack of physical strength. Indicating that the Force is something spiritual and within us all and stuff. But you add lightsabers to this regardless of size and it becomes completely impractical. What if there are creatures the size of mice who can use the Force and become Jedi, are they going to wield a lightsaber?

All the Force now seems to be is just some sort of power/energy level used to wield lightsabers and throw stuff.

Because the way Yoda was handled in the prequels destroyed the entire theme of the character. OT Yoda is small and unassuming. The idea is that he is more powerful than any other Jedi not because he can wave a sword around, but because his wisdom and calm gives him an unrivalled grasp of the Force. In the prequels, they just said "oh, he's a Jedi, so I guess he's a kung-fu warrior now". So of course they made him jump, twirl around in the air and engage in other acrobatics.

There's nothing wrong with Yoda having and occasionally using the lightsaber. What's wrong is that prequel Yoda's fighting style goes against everything that the OT made him out to be.

OT: So, who's writing the new Star Wars Christmas Special then?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I want to see something new. Not every already established character and planet shoehorned into another nonsensical hole-ridden plot where the same 10 people visit the same 10 locations and occasionally hit each other with lightsabers.
There is literally a whole galaxy of possibilities to explore here, give us something new!

I'd love to see a faux blacksploitation sci fi film starring Lando, funky Jazz soundtrack and all. That would be amazing.

So they're actually planning on oversaturating the market?
Would you have preferred indefinite re-releases and edits of the existing franchise in addition to the mountain ranges of merchandize that George was working on?

OT: At first I thought that the spinoff films would be the trilogy, positively surprised now. Hopefully they will make something good out of this.

Absolutely fantastic.

I have decided that this will now be the benchmark by which I will judge the new Star Wars films, and boy will they have their work cut out for them!

As long as they take the franchise in new and interesting directions I'm fine with this.

Unless I'm misinformed, I think Disney's acquisition of Star Wars basically retconned every extended universe tale out of canon. If that's not the case then I would take this news and hope beyond hope that this is a subtle hint that maybe we could see a Shadows of the Empire film (since Shadows was basically everything BUT a film in its heyday). As for Return of the Jedi I'd love to see Star Wars: Aftermath or something similar which shows off the fallout of the death of Sidious and destruction of the second Death Star. That Seven Samurai idea sounded great but I thought that was all just a rumor.
