I got back an hour ago from it. Oh my fucking god, it was intense. I knew movies could be cool, but not THAT cool. It was a little uneasy at first, but it stunned me. Some scenes brought back intense memories of blowing cop cars in GTA 4.

I've said it before, while I am planning on seeing it, I'm a little worried about the "R" rated-ness to it. I'm not the most blood-tolerant man out there, so I always get a little squeamish when I see a bunch of blood n' gore n' stuff which R movies tend to have a lot of.

I'll still most likely see it with a friend, but I'm just being a nansy pansy and worrying about the gore. How is it the gore levels in this movie? (I only read the bottom since I didn't want any spoilers)
It sounds a lot worse than it is. There is no in your face gore like a horror flick or saving private ryan. It's almost like a videogame (take Ninja gaiden2) yeah your chopping arms and heads off with more blood splatter than ever but its not sickening.

did you ever see the short film this was based on? Apparently Jackson saw the short at a film festival and decided to fund the movie for the newbie director. I think it is based on similar "non alien" situations in south africa (district 6 I want to say?)
I assumed it was based on similar things, african things specifically. Camps like that are always pretty similar in their atrocities
The short film is called "Alive In Joburg" It's a documentary style, ten minute film about the exact same thing. The aliens look a bit different though and the special effects aren't nearly as purty.

I'm sure a quick youtube search of it would yield results.

Gore is definitely one of the main attractions in this film. I don't think it is as gross as it is simply awe inspiring, but the movie is definitely bloodthirsty.

One of the worst I believe is when a missile is fired into a man's skull. It shows his jaw slack and his eyes roll back shortly before the missile detonates. The camera focused on the entire thing, however it went by rather quickly.
Hmmm, I should be able to handle it. And if I can't, I can just close my eyes and ears and pretend I didn't see anything :p

Well...at one point the main character ends up pulling off his own fingernails and it is pretty brutal, but I would still go see this movie it is worth any amount of sickness after.
Jeez, and the trailers seemed so peaceful :S

The gore is there, but its not really a focus. Its like in war movies, the focus is the story but there just happens to be some explosions and gore. There's no protracted scenes of someone bleeding, even the head missle explode thing was only for a few seconds. Most of the alien weapons cause people to pretty much blow apart into unrecognizable bits. Its less gorey, more "gun that turns people into explosive spam"

Man, I really wish my friends would want to see this. The only reason I probably won't see this is because I really hate watching movies in theaters alone.
I'll go with you cousin It! Anything to be near a star. I might see it twice just because it was that good.

Also good review, I felt like you hit the nail on the head in most of it. I'm not sure how predictable the movie plot was, I was second guessing what would happen the whole way through.

Maybe Its just because I 've seen a butt load of movies, but I can generally guess what tropes the film will have. Like when the main guy got sprayed I knew he would become an alien or something like it. And I knew they would mess with him to use the weapons. I was pretty sure he would escape and I knew he would go back for the container. Also knew he would probably do a hero sacrifice to let the aliens get away.

From just the trailer they show in theaters I knew some guy would be contaminated, but I also expected the Prawns to rise up in rebellion or something.

Saw it last night, it was indeed very good, and a good review OP, well done.
I also liked how for much of the first part of the film it almost felt like a documentary or a news broadcast, I thought that was fairly clever on their part.
