Didn't know they gimped the free version, that does rather suck. Totally worth the $5, or especially the $10/month if you have a portable player, though. Worth every penny. Hope they don't gimp the paid service any time soon, because it's just awesome.

As Spotify has taken off, it's received more pressure from music corporations, which has thus forced its hand to make the paid tiers more appealing by lessening the experience of the free tier. I've been a paid Spotify user for a while now, and saw this coming about 18 months ago.
Sure but don't advertise your service in this way then

if your motto is "Spotify to reduce music piracy" (Believe me I've been slapped with that commercial for half a year at least on daily basis) I find it absurd you'd pull a scheme like this
Dude, you're getting free music in exchange for a slightly annoying commercial every now and again. Be thankful.
No I'm not I'm getting 10 hours of music of which 3 are probably comercial blocks from a service that used to be free all round

I think it's a weird and absurd change in the system that this was

Its like your Free 2 play mmo just forced you to either pay a subscription or gtfo

I'm not sure what version of Spotify everyone is talking about. I have the latest (Free) version and I have listened to songs dozens of times, for more than 150 hours in one month. There are just adds every ten minutes.

Well, they gotta pay the record labels somehow. Putting a 10hour cap per month is means to get more people to bay the monthly fee for unlimited music.

I'm not sure about the limit on listening to a song only four times on a free account, I'm pretty sure I listened to Mastodon's The Czar about 9 times last month without any sort of notification.

I suddenly got a bar in the top of my screen that shows how many minutes I have left this month which for me currently is 0 because I listen to a lot of music

I can't even use Spotify.

In my country my only option is... ugh... YouTube. And Sony/EMI/WMG/VEVO/whatever have done a great job restricting certain content.

Great job trying to stop piracy.

Try Grooveshark. Not as many nuts and bolts but is free and does the job.
Thanks a lot, never had heard of that site!
