I did a project on Black Metal for a public speaking class-- during my research (and by "research" I mean "skimming of Wikipedia") I came across the album cover for Mayhem's CD Dawn of the Black Hearts, which features a picture of the band's vocalist after his suicide (slit wrists and shotgun blast to the head).

I've seen some brutal album art, but for me, that one takes the cake. There's some debate as to whether or not the image is real, but the guy did commit suicide and it's still pretty disturbing to place the image of a former band member's bloody corpse on the front of an album.
Yeah, you beat me to that one...

I didn't really wanna have to describe it either.

The Scorpions had a naked 10-year old girl in a seductive pose as the original cover for their album Virgin Killer. That was like a couple of decades ago and all.

Well, it's not so much the cover as it is the album name and song names.

It's disturbingly hilarious or if you're me, just hilarious.

And technically it's just an EP, but I just wanted to share this.

Cannibal Corpse has been the go-to mom offender since '88. I would be upset if their covers didn't look like that. It's there to get a reaction. You can't complain; at least you felt something that day.

The only thing more amusing than Metal cover art is Metal subgenres. As many have said, it's best to come at that sort of thing with a sense of humour.

But seriously, Cannibal Corpse and Cradle have just become things you expect to have gore. Maiden did it much better, with more panache and a degree of political amusement rather than just "LOOKIE BLUD!" Which, incidentally, seems to be the them for many 'hardcore' fans of both Corpse and Cradle. Odd that.
Yeah I do not like them at all aye.

Good call.

Pretty sure that it is faked. For once the brain is still mostly intact and it seems to me that there is too litle blood (not that there has to be a lot but the body has about 5 liters of blood and at least half of that would spill out in a case like this).

Well, I've dug around a little bit, and I came up with this interview with Hellhammer, the drummer, in which he says that Euronymous took the pictures, which were then stolen:

Dawn of the Black Hearts is actually a bootleg live album, which could explain a stolen image as the cover.

Also, in this interview with the same guy he confesses to him and Euronymous making amulets out of pieces of his skull. Ahem, "Once I looked under his bed and found two big pieces of [sic]scull. I took one piece and Euronymous took the other. We made amulets out of them."

http://www.thetruemayhem.com/interviews/previous/hh-june1998.htm

So yeah, I think it's real.

Now, youthinasia isnt that bad, i laughed. but one album I saw was for some kind of local band, and it was a picture of a girl being raped and torn apart by some tentacle demon...
You are on the Internet. For further clarification, see: 4chan, subsection /h/.

You guys have to check out some of the Scorpions' album covers.

Virgin Killer: www.cracked.com/articleimages/dan/covers/scorpions.jpg (The original cover was all nude with the sweet parts covered by cracked glass)
Lovedrive: www.cracked.com/articleimages/dan/covers/lovedrive.jpg (that's a gummy substance the guy is pulling. Use your imagination)

How has nobody mentioned Carcass yet? I can't find pictures on google but the art inside Symphonies of Sickness are photographs of rotting bodies interpersed with newspaper clipping describing horrific instances of murder/necrophilia etc. Hell, the songs have names like Crepitating Bowel Erosion.

Fucking awesome album though =D

I agree. There are some bands like Cannibal Corpse and Waco Jesus that take it way too far and it is extremely offensive. As a woman, I like heavy metal, but God damn...cut out the rape and fuckin disgusting sexual shit that degrades women.

Ok, Time for a rant...
What is it with heavy metal bands, feeling the need to put the most goriest, unneeded album covers ever. I Was in a local FYE, and i found this...
http://cablemodem.fibertel.com.ar/aleweb/blog/cannibal-corpse_butchered-at-birth_front.jpg
not sure what the f*ck to classify that...
Now, I love Heavy metal, yes, I love the darkest, heaviest sh*t ever. BUT, what i hate are the bands who do that. Or try being More metal by having song titles like, "Shotgun abortion with babies eyes in my mouth" or "Fornicating your Uterus with your fathers hatchet" Seriously dude... is that sh*t nessecary? You can be dark and heavy without being FRICKING PSYCHO! Black Sabbath could do it, Iron Maiden could do it, Megadeth could do it, why can other bands?

Let Us discuss.
Also, for entertainment values, post other Horrendous album covers you see.
Hah, research Cannibal Corpse a bit and you will find that is BY FAR one of their tamest covers.

As for why, it fits their image and music. If it is offensive to you, by all means don't listen to it. Each person has their own taste. I love CC myself, but I also love Iron Maiden, Metallica, Turisas, and pretty much ANYTHING metal.

EDIT: This is probably the worst and most offensive cover they have.

!!NSFW!!: DO NOT LOOK AT THIS IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED BY GRAPHIC CONTENT.
