But L4D2 SHOULD have been an update/expansion. There were not any MAJOR graphical improvements and there were new models introduced. Big deal. I personally did not buy it because I could not justify spending 40 bucks on a game I practically already had. With better main characters, too.

Because the only reason a sequel is ever made is to improve graphics, right?


Valve made major changes to the game. The new AI system was to complex to be added to the old game. It was not possible to implement dynamic weather and level changes into the old AI director, so they had to make a new one. Plus the new system for generating gore could also have not been added to the game. The changes that mandated that Left 4 Dead 2 be a sequel rather than DLC are not directly visible at first glance, but they are certainly there.

STOP! I know one of the first counter-arguments to this is going to be that the AI wasn't improved at all, and is now worse. Well that's complete bullshit. The new SI AI is far more complex. The AI director actually has the SI work as a team rather than simply bum rush you like they did in Left 4 Dead. The survivor AI hasn't gotten any worse either. Don't judge the AI based on that one Youtube video we've all seen when they jump over the ledge. I've only seen one in-game example of that stupidity. And the AI wasn't perfect when Left 4 Dead was released either. Keep in mind that the original game has had multiple patches to iron out all the bugs on the official maps.

People lack a fundamental understanding of how DLC comes to be made. Virgil made an eloquent rant about the subject on the news thread announcing the details of the Dragon Age: Warden's Keep DLC, because people were blindly raging (as is par for the course.)

After having purchased L4D2, and only having had the game for a week, I've got to say that anyone who thinks this should have been DLC is an idiot. There's just so much changed that there would've been no way to fit it all in. Sure, it don't sound like much on paper, but L4D2's changes make it an ENTIRELY different game than the original, to the point where they're both worth purchasing thanks to the different experiences that you get.

Even with ODST, a game which wasn't really worth full price, the cries of "IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DLC" don't make sense, because the game was just too big to be DLC. Sure, it was too small to be a full-priced game, but if it had sold for maybe 10-15 dollars less across the board, you wouldn't have heard any bitching from people.

Once a DLC get to grow beyond a certain size, it just isn't practical to release it as DLC anymore. However,it doesn't have to be a numbered sequel since that upsets so many people without just cause.

Rockstar got it right back in the PS2/Xbox era with its Grand Theft Auto 3 semi-quels and the retail release of Episodes From Liberty City (which probably shouldn't have been DLC to begin with since it added nothing to the original game with Niko Bellic but ate up tons of harddrive space).

Either every sequal should be DLC or nothing should,there is no grey area, Oh madden deserves to be a sequal,but MW2 doesn't, Left 4 dead 2 doesn't deserve to be a sequal,but Killzone 2 does, they are all baseless accusations.

Someone once said TF2 doesn't deserve to be a sequal, a game which was released 10 YEARS after the first, if this shit goes on the only games that are allowed to be sequals are completely different games. It would mean having a third person shooter be a sequal to a JRPG,with completely different story and game mechanics.

My main problem with DLC is when it is not available for purchase in the way you bought the original game.

My experience was with Fallout 3 using Steam. I have no real xbox live connections or really use live at all, I have an account since Fallout 3 required it, but I don't know anything about it. After buying the game I wanted to buy some DLC's, apparently Steam doesn't do them. To solve this I would have had to do a bunch of background work on adding the DLC's I would have to buy elsewhere and having them integrate with the Steam version of Fallout 3. So I didn't buy any DLCs. Thats my problem with DLC

And just to taunt me, weeks after I bought it, now you can buy the Game of the Year addition with all the DLC's for the price I paid for the base game...

I still don't get why people say L4D2 could have been DLC, it's fucking huge for an expansion. it's a lot larger than the first game itself...how the FUCK do you make that DLC?! This trend became popular about the time that Halo 3: ODST came out. Which was understandable, seeing as ODST (as good as it was) was not really worth the heavy price tag, especially because it had been planned to be DLC.

But soon, the trend festered, and grew.

Soon people were saying this for titles like L4D2, which to an extent was still reasonable.


But no, the masses were still unpleased. They needed to ride this wagon as long as possible.

I agree ODST is a ripoff through and though, but while LFD2 is very similar and pretty much all the DLC they planned to begin with, I beleave its still a true sequal and worth the full price.

I do think that more ODST's are comeing down the pipe and we need to vote with our wallets saying "WE SHALL NOT STAND FOR THIS INSULT!"

But at the same time we are going to get people who say that full games worth the 60$ should be DLC or cheaper.
