You still have a choice. Gaming is the only medium where the player can define the pace, feel and even genre to an extent. So far, I'm only aware of BioWare having croosed the line by putting a guy in camp telling you to buy the DLC. Apart from that, it is there, but completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things so long as you're enjoying the game and if you're not enjoying the game then why would you buy DLC? Once you have decided that you want more, that is the only time to buy DLC.
Bioware was the first, but are they the last? Is there any indication that we are not, in fact, trending towards ever-more intrusive and "necessary" DLC? With some of the language Activision and EA are tossing around these days, with subscriptions for previously free experiences and pay for "premium" demos, I fervently believe the worst is yet to come. When you reach the point where it's almost standard practice to ship a half-finished game with the express intent of bilking buyers out of another $30-50 via DLC, the stuff won't seem so "optional" anymore. Not for gaming enthusiasts, anyways - because the moment you stop partaking in all the latest and greatest releases, in what sense are you really the same sort of gamer anymore?
It all sounds like overreaction and panic, but I never thought I'd see them trotting out this kind of bullshit DLC at this point. Sky's the limit, really.
