Well that's the beauty of it really. It has all this different/changed/new stuff, but since you're the DM, just play it how you want. Nothing is forcing you to go by all their rules. Play how you want, play how you and your friends can have fun. Most importantly, actually have that fun.

I've been DMing for a few years now, but I haven't DM'd any 4e, so I'm a bit biased :)

I'm keeping with the 3.5 because I just have too many books to switch out right now, and the lack of focus on the actual "role playing" in 4e turned me off. I remember playing games with a really good GM where combat was minimal, and we have incredible fun. 4e was all about streamlining the combat and rebalancing the classes.

As for crits, I don't even use the standard way it works. I use crit charts and fumble charts to make the combat much more funnermost.

The one thing that really gets me though, is how crazy HP is for 4e compared to 3.5 I mean, I grabbed quick stats for a 4e CE 1 kobold fight, and it butchered our little 3.5 party... sure there was an occasional lucky roll, but we had no chance at all.

I played 3.5e for a while, then summer break happened and 4e was played then and it was immensely enjoyable. I can deal with both but 3.5 is just too damn hard... Or maybe my DM's are just assholes and the newbie using 4e is simply more forgiving.

I dislike how in 4th edition many classes feel and play the exact same except with different names to describe their abilities and with only marginal, often cosmetic differences. There *should* be a massive difference between playing a caster and a melee class, and yet really it doesn't feel like there's one anymore. Some might argue that it's better this way, that every class is now on some level 'equal', but as someone who enjoyed playing quirky oddball characters it just makes everything feel equally boring to me.

3.5 and the older systems might've been messier and often unnecessarily complex, but damn it, they were fun!

Looked at 4e for a bit. Got angry when I saw that Paladins were no longer required to be Lawful Good. Got pissed. Went back to 3.5.
