Same here man, its a shame because it sounds like fun.

It is alot of fun when you find a group of regular players of likeminded persuasion.

My last group of friends I played with were very into the character building Roleplay aspects while I was more into the puzzle solving with some pauses for character building.
I'm a novice DM and I'm getting better I live in Hertfordshire, UK incidentally if anyone reads this and wants to start up?

Hertfordshire? Seriously? And I was just about to whine how nobody seems to be playing near here. If you're not far from Watford I might have to try DnD.

OT: Closest I've gotten to playing is the BG games, so my favourite char I've made from that would be Xillak; an elven dual class (is dual class even possible in actual DnD?) mage/thief, who only has some basic illusion abilities to make being a thief easier. He's from the docks in Athkatla, and spends a lot of time around a ... certain guild there. He's arrogant, but he's a coward and will quickly back down when challenged, as can be seen in his choice of magic school.

He cares only for his reputation; he likes to think of himself as some sort of legend, but really, he's just another lackey for the Shadow Thieves. He wields two weapons for those inevitable fights; a shortsword and a dagger which he's surprisingly proficient with.

I've done the whole DnD thing Backwards: Because I was the one who first got my group together, taught all my friends, I became DM without ever have actually have been a player.

So, if I could be a character, it would probably be a really bookish, distracted, and slightly offbeat human wizard. I've run a few NPCs like that, and they're a ton of fun.

I have a character that has gone through 4 iterations of the game (AD&D, 3rd, 3.5/3.75 and 4th)

Asgoth Elfslayer, Cleric of Clangeddin Silverbeard, ocassional fighter, full time drinker.

Started off as a specialty priest of Silverbeard (from Demihuman Deities expansion), and geared towards combat (i.e. prepared spells for damage and healing, with little else in mind). Made it to 15th level before we went and started 3.0/3.5/3.75 rules. From there, he became a combination cleric/fighter, and maxed out to level 20. we didn't bother using the elh, and so xp was capped.

Alas, in 4th ed he is still ~5th level. not that matters anymore because our group has abandoned D&D, due to the constant rule changes, ambiguity and now new "Essentials" being released we cbf'd investing in more books. we have taken up WFRP and are happy with it.

Fortunately i have a decent and constant group to play with.

Lyrcene Stormsunder

An Aerenal elf who's fairly clumsy but a strong and dedicated Truthbringer Paladin of the Sovereign Host. Her primary focus in battle is to draw enemy fire and absorb as much as possible; but this tank also has a nasty bite. Imagine a combat medic that can solo better than a Barbarian. Backstory: none. She's basically the spitting image of my girlfriend with abilities I find ironic. LYdia Rose ChENEy, the ever-fearful of lightning. She has an invisibility spell that's useless with her stats, she's a paladin that has cleric-esque focus on healing and vs.-undead. If I'm in a party that's going up against undead, I'm usually the most valuable player, even if there's a cleric in the party. I know this because usually after I die the whole party does the same. She's definitely been good luck for me.
Maybe when she True Reincarnates I'll make her more useful. And not give her an invisibility spell.
My other character is me, a paladin also but spec'd for damage. I don't know, there's something about a melee type that can reduce and negate damage.

We play the game far more for mechanics than for RP.

I'm running Human Rogue knife thrower specialist using paragon path 'Flying-Blade Adept' in 4th edition. The concept is to best match the character Trejo, from movies like Desperado or Machete <which I've never seen>.

Secondly I run a Dwarven Shaman whose spirit companion typically tries to take the form of environmentally appropriate creatures or common enemies of the foes we face. Though some how it typically ends up becoming a Mind Flayer since everyone's afraid of them.

In my 3.5E days I was a big fan of the damage dealing non-healing cleric. A class type that was extremely difficult to play in any group because of spell expectations (even though I'd make it clear to the group of what kind of cleric I'm going to play). I liked their necromancy list though.

My dnd group doesn't do much of the RP but I kinda made a little backstory.

I play a Catfolk Monk named Agren Stonepaw. Agren took a Vow of Poverty and Vow of Chastity while he trained at the monastery. After a feud with another monk at the monastery Agren left to go find adventure. He is kind hearted, energetic and kicks some major ass when its fighting time.

Likes: Training, Being scratched, helping the poor
Dislikes: Having tail pulled, being called "fur ball", greedy people

I have a 4th ed human warlock called trevor but I don't really like 4th ed that much,. my favourite 3.5 character was a half orc barbarian with 5 Int who specialised in sailing. I picked that as a joke however it actually got our party out of some tough situations. He also had a chicken as a weapon (improvised of course because my DM wouldn't make up rules for "exotic weapon proficiency: poultry")

Ravion Al'Vaar, the veteran Human Fighter (my luckiest starting stats ever 16 str, 14 dex, 18 cons, 12 int, 14 wis and 10 char.) I have used him to play a number of campaigns and even completed one epic campaign with him before he was retired.

A man of many surprises, many a foe have fallen to his sword and shield when they failed to notice that behind his imposing and brutal appearance lies a quick and cunning intellect and even faster hands. What he lacks in manners and grooming, he makes up for with his almost encyclopedic knowledge of all things adventuring.

While he tends to do what is right, he does have a rather amibiguous moral code. A prime example of this being the time when he dragged his near dead mage companion all the back to town to report their success, only to kill him by dumping him down the town well after they had received and divided up their reward. To clarify the situation, ravion and the mage hated eachother, the mage was a massive ass and had cost Ravion the use of his left eye and given him many scars and burns due to his careless spellcasting.

I played a level 11 Sorceror/level 5 master of the unseen hand (you stop getting new spells and all your spells get dumped into extra telekinesis spells per day and boosting that spell's powers massively). Wore a cloak that was identical to Spawn's in aesthetics, billowing of it's own accord and obscuring my features other than my face. Basically in the campaign the players were 3 groups of bad guys with each group having a different agenda for a item we were ultimately stealing. My friend and ally was a dwarf wizard and both of us who are eccentric in real life were insane in-game. At one point he turns his skull and bones temporarily into stone with a spell and I hurled a captured enemy at him with such force he was impaled on my dwarf buddy and he wore that enemy as a necklace for the rest of the game. We also had a extra dimensional house where we abducted the women of every city we visited to make an epic harem (their choice was to come willingly or be hurled 160ft vertically by my spell). At the end the stone ended up being destroyed and everyone (but me) died. When the stone shattered it went of like a small nuke. I however seeing that an awe inspiring powerful artifact was about to be shattered, spammed my dimension door. Then resurrected my dwarf buddy (who died earlier) as a liche.

Other than that I have had a insane barbarian who spent his entire adolescent/pubescent years being tortured for the location of his people's capital but broke free as an adult slaughtering everyone on the way out and never quite left the slaughter mindset. Though he was chaotic good. As a result of his history he no longer could feel mundane pain and could make anyone talk through torture, having learned through experience what hurts.

And I have a dark heresy character who grew up on a planet outside of the imperium that hates both the empire and chaos. The whole planet is run on anarchy (take it if you can get away without being caught). Basically being ruled, to him and to everyone else on the planet, is the highest sin you can commit, so he acts on what he wants whenever he wants it and will murder anyone who stands in his way without a second though. Because of the cheapness of life as he grew up he values his life somewhere about zero in monetary terms and his greatest flaw is that if someone comes against his principals (for example never compromising on being ruled over) he will refuse even if someone has a gun against his forehead and is more than willing to murder him. In game-play terms that means I will willingly re-roll a character if it means him dieing and not breaking that character trait. It is only big issues he will do that to though. If it is something rational like "take your squad and secure the armory" he is cool with it. However "surrender your weapons and enter our custody" is a no. He is a desperado btw.

I'm the DM so it's normally NPCs that I get proud of. right now my friends are facing off against Neliad, a half-elf warlock who began experimenting with undead spells so he could spend eternity with the woman he loves. later in the campaign he became a lich, made a flying pirate ship and traveled to the abyss to destroy the shard of pure evil so he could kill Tharzidun and become a god. He does this to plunge the world into madness and chaos so that it will be more interesting.

lvl 8 weapons master, dragon decendant. his weapon is an exotic syth from the eberron champaign settings.

born n raised in a small town of dragon decendants, pretty much 1 house per colour/type, they're always fighting, so it's got no name, cuz nobody had enough mustle to name it

oh, and the cleric we got wants to kill my guy, cuz he's a red decendant, and the cleric specializses in killing evil dragons. that GOD my guys CN. XD

I'm more of a DM so I don't get much time to flesh out my character, but here he is anyway:

He's a Tiefling Warlock named Xvaster Vicelord. He was born on another plain, and because of which, was naturally gifted with Arcana. He was later adopted into a Tiefling merchant family, but disgraced them due to his inability to control his emotions. During one such fit of rage he triggered his Arcana which he never knew existed. After which he left his family in search of his true self. He also worships the Raven Queen in the hope she will guide him to his destiny.

My Character Ideas(ones I intend on using):

Alejandro Fernando *some mariachi music plays*: Very charismatic Human Bard; has the titles "Man Who can Hear the Music"(reference to ABBA) and "The 3-Legged Man"(guess what that means! XD).
I'm hoping we end up fighting Tiamat, so that the whole group gets to kill one head for each person. I want Alejandro to kill the head he got by cockslapping her in the face!(I managed to talk my friend into letting us have a "So Awesome It HAS TO Work" card.)

Richard Rerednaw: Human Monk who I want to take the Apostle of Peace prestige class. Very calm & kind; He tries to avoid violence and prefers to talk things over, but if he has to fight he'll kick some ass!

Augur: Human Warlock with an Inferiority Complex. Frequently has nervous breakdowns whenever he's being asked to many questions too quickly, or is being yelled at. When these breakdowns happen, he frequently ends up killing people(unknowingly) and can't remember what happened.

In a recently-started 4th edition campaign I have a 2nd level Eladrin Swordmage called Muirvah (or Malcolm if you ask the DM). The first thing he did was kill a Drow and a Half-elf who were attacking an inn...and happened to be the other two players. That adventure didn't go very well.

In the second one the most health damage he received in one go was from a bowl full of soup being smashed round his face (in a critical hit mind you) by a guy he was trying to sneak up on. Good times.
