https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U2CePgS1Rc This is probably the best trailer for the game.
Space Station 13 is an open source, free multiplayer game that's hosted on Byond and created by the people of SomethingAwful. (Byond is like steam for obscure (and I mean obscure(No really only like 3 games has over 100 players)))
You, and depending on your server popularity, 1 - 90 other people are put on a research station in space, which is supposed to study and refine plasma - which is sort of a toxic fossil fuel rather than ionized matter. Depending on the nature of the server, you have to simply survive the round as anarchy reigns, or roleplay by doing your assigned job... And try to survive the round as usually anarchy grips the station.
You customize your character before a round, and the depth of customization is rather deep - despite the pixelated graphics. You're then plopped on the station. You can be an engineer and accidentally release the singularity which eats half the station, be a doctor in the medical department and accidentally do an entire brain-removal surgery when someone was brought in with a papercut, play as security and beat people with a stunstick because YOU ARE THE LAW, or a bunch of other positions. Or rather, literally everything on the station. The robots, the station AI, even the mice if you died and couldn't be cloned.
It's extremely fun, and the things you can do in the game is insane. You can have a normal round, or you can be attacked by Space Wizards, time travelling Mexicans from 1845 and a warrior from the year 5000, deal with a Changling (which is a serial killer that can TAKE YOUR FORM after it sucks out all your juices), deal with a C'thulu-esque cult as they attempt to raise an eldritch abomination through human sacrifice, or fight xenomorphs (And yes, name yourself Ripley and fight them in a mining mech) while dodging facehuggers. If you die, your body can be cloned and you pop right back out - though you need about a minute of cyro and brain medicines made by the medbay chemist. I usually play as a member of security, either as a detective or a grunt in jackboots. My days on the station are spent chasing naked aliens running around staging protests, ignoring Space Lawyers, and trying to convince the Head of Security to not detonate the nuke because a space ninja is battling clowns in the chapel.
From what I understand, there are two major versions of the game. Baystation, and /tg/. /tg/ stations are mostly played and managed by people from /vg/ on 4chan, and tend to be more chaotic and have different coding for things. Baystation is managed by... Everyone else?? There's quite a few servers with baycode where roleplay is the word of the day.

"Welcome to security. You're stuck with two incompetents, a psychopath, and a fresh blood recruit."
EDIT:
Oh, and you can run around the station as a clown. But you'll usually be thrown out an airlock, because people hate clowns.
