It depends entily on wht the game is I use both depeniding on the game.
Pc: better for FPS
Console: sports games, and 3rd person games e.g. Assassins Creed.

Soz can't think what Genre is Assassins Creed?

Seeing the wars going on and so many bitter people on the internet, it seems no gamers have any fun at all.

Get Steam. Nothing else needs to be said, you can IM your friends, set up community pages, send gift games, invite them to games, know whether they're online, know what they're playing, etc, etc, etc.

store.steampowered.com

^^ Your answer.
Voicechat/sending data?
>:) gotcha, hehe.
Steam would be a great product if it wasn't responsible for me not being able to play Half-Life 2 or its add-ons any more. It generally fucks with games a lot.
"The Game you are playing has not been registered on your account. Please verify your CD Key and restart" after having registered Left 4 Dead 8 months earlier. WTF?
Voicechat? Yes, there is. You click "Start voice chat" on the IM menu.
Sending data? Link to 2shared.com. It's easy.
Steam hasn't fucked with any of my games so far.

The OP is right. Even as a hardcore PC gamer, there are definitely strong positives to consoles, a simple reliable setup being one of them. It may be sort of an effort->reward thing though, as a lot of people will say some of the best games of the last 20 years are either PC exclusive, or best played on PC.
Even if the prices for a custom-built "mainstream" gamer PC are less than most console gamers predict (especially if you have an existing, crappy computer to work with) there's still a lot of effort that goes into planning and assembly, and I have to acknowledge that's something not everyone wants to deal with. Heck, I'm a nearly-certified technician and even I have trouble figuring out why the damn USB ports aren't responding.
But one of the strongest aspects of PC gaming is that you're not spoon-fed anything, and get access to whatever the heck you want. You get digitally distributed games from whoever bids lowest, not just the only store you can get to. You buy games made by a striving developer in Taiwan with a low advertising budget, not the big blockbuster funded by Sony. You buy the oldest adventure game ever made purely because it hits every Top 10 list you've found, and it works just fine despite being some 11 years old.

Also, the money-spent thing actually goes the other way around if you buy a lot of games. I could probably get about 20 PC games for the price of one copy of CoD 4 for the Xbox.

+ Better Communitys (setting them up)
+ Mouse and FUCKING KEYBOARD! Oh yeah!
+ Modifications.
+ Customization.
+ We use an actual OS, so if we want we can alt tab outta the game, and go to a walkthrough if desperate.
+ Console(no not the gaming console, it's a command window CALLED Console). Who doesn't wanna spawn what ever the hell they want [sub]Crazy people that's who[/sun]
+ Dedicated Servers, and Dedicated Server browser. If I want 6 ping and map X with 63/64 people I'll get that 6 ping with Map X with 63/64
+ More people per map. Which then = Bigger maps.
+ More graphical and processing power then the current consoles. That's right, the consoles TECH WISE are out dated.
+ Devs can add features that just can't be done on consoles due to hardware restraints. Example in Red Faction Guerrilla they improved the destruction and physics for the computer.

- Hard for people who can't work a computer (i.e. Idiots)
- Generally speaking, unless you're in the know you won't be able to upgrade or maintain the computer. But due to it being PC and having the INTERNET available it's a mere google search away.
- Devs focus on console gamers.

Hell, from my Point of view, with exception to Devs not caring about the PC guys (due to us being a minority now) I don't see why console Gamers ARE console gamers. Unless you seriously can't work a freaken server browser window, or you just can't work a computer (from which is a freaken GOOGLE SEARCH AWAY) I just don't see it.

Ahh well to be fair all of my Console experience is from my PS2 and reading online.
i used to like consoles alot but i'd go with this

I prefer xbox, because my friends use it, and I can play with them.

I have played PC games in the past, and on the whole they have felt less reliable, and I cannot play with my friends, so for now, I choose xbox as my preferred method of gaming.

With the Xbox, for example, there is a feeling of community
I rolled up with some people I didn't know in a random lobby.
Wut? That's every game in Xbox Live. Dedicated servers are persistent communities, each with their own regulars that over time you get to know and enjoy hanging out with. With xbox live, unless you're playing with friends, then every game will be a bunch of random dickheads.
Dedicated servers > Xbox live.

There isn't the friendly dashboard with a nice interface showing my friends, what they're playing, my games, my achievements, etc. It's nice; it's clean.

There is a lot of work - the initial setup, keeping it updated, drivers, installing,
I spent a couple hours the other night installing MGS4, downloading updates for it, and helping a friend of mine configure ports to make his copy work. Consoles are quickly getting laden down with the same shit PC gamers have been dealing with for years.

most PC problems are caused by incompetent users.
This x 9001. My first question to anyone with a computer problem is "What did you break?"

I have measured global fun levels with my frivolometer and can confirm that PC gamers have on average 10 funvins per hour more fun than the average console gamer.
Frivolometer?! What has science done?

OT: I love console gaming more than playing my PC.

The only reason I still use my PC for gaming is mods and exclusives.

My theory: console gamers have more fun, PC gamers have more satisfaction.

Think about all the time you invest in building, fine-tuning and maintaining a good gaming PC to make it actually pleasurable to play. At the end of all of that, it feels good knowing all the work you put in.

As for the community part, Steam... it's like Xbox live yet less... Xbox livey... which is good in my opinion.

Then there are other perks

-Custom Content
-More power
-FREE SHIT
-Lotsa indie stuff (if your into that)
-Easier internet access (in my opinion)
-I usually find the community more... intelligent, but thats not a fact... at all.
-Dedicated servers, meaning less lag
-Old games
-Plus all the other stuff you can do on PC's, like post on the Escapist!

I know that with a console, you can be sure that a game will run fine on it.
This is probably the best reason to own a console, hands down.

and that with a PC, you better be damn sure your PC can run it, or else you are in for a laggy, unplayable mess.

*feels ripped off after getting "The Bard's Tale" off of Steam, only to find that its slow as fuck even on low*
*points and laughs at you for failing to check your machine against the requirements*
*feels bad shortly thereafter*
I checked. It said that I could run it on full on CanYouRunIt.com
I've never heard of that site, but the official sites usually give a much better picture of the recommended specs.

Is your PC suitably tweaked for gaming, e.g. unneeded services disabled, lightest and fewest possible background programs running, etc.?
Nope. It's not a gaming PC. Just a home PC. It's not absolutely abysmal, but it's not going to run Oblivion above minimum. And the only thing I run in the background is, well, Firefox with one/two tabs open.

So, do blondes console gamers have more fun? I'm just going to put a console gamer's perspective on this, with the intention of PC gamers putting their points across and other console gamers agreeing with me. Obviously.

Too. Much. Effort.

...say, £1000 pounds and hours building a good PC for something that a console can do adequately...
That last sentence says it all... Besides getting a good understanding of a device you will use every day for the rest of your life, building a computer, or at least researching what someone else needs to build for you, helps you get a better understanding of new technologies and you can build exactly what you need for exactly what you can afford.

Secondly, you need a pc anyways. spend 1k on a good machine or spend 400 on a piece of junk you need to replace in 2 years anyways, then go buy a PS3, a new HD tv and pay for online play and more per game. *yes I know ps3 has free online play. Thats mostly for 360 owners.*

My $1800 PC is cheaper then your xbox + tv + accessories + crappy pc you need anyways.

But then again, I like to learn new things. I get satisfaction that I built the PC I'm using now, as well as installing new break lines on my VW by reading forums and the shelves I built in the shed of my own design. You just kinda sound lazy...

in the end I don't think it matters 90% of hardcore PC gamers own atleast one current gen console anyway which are the first to deal with patches and installations that eariler consoles didn't have.
Pc gaming is actually for me far more convient the wider capabilitys like say taking a screenshot or putting recorded gaming footage on youtube or hiting up a gaming forum like this one all get done using the same machine

Achievments can sod off and die

Looking at your profile I noticed something: you're a PC technician.

You've got a job. I'm at school, and , I know you've probably got life a lot harder on the whole than me, but you likely have more spare time than me. A large portion of a regular day is spent at school, with about an hour of completely free time. I only have the weekends to do what I really want and even then there is some coursework or something. The thing is, I'm not lazy, I just have other, far more important needs which will probably determine my future. Forgive me if I'm a little lazy.

You also have a job that favors PC gaming, ie your work is centred around computers (sorry if I'm making assumptions). I, on the other hand, am simple. I don't have particular proficiency in any subject, let alone PCs. And yes, I suppose I could learn to build one in my free time but again, I don't think I'd want to. In this respect you are ideal to be a PC gamer and I... am not.
