Do europeans dislike americans?

everyone knows the stereotypes, but are they right?
So: Do europeans dislike americans? and if so why?

I personnaly don't dislike americans in general, although I do think that some things are a bit wack. like over-censoring sexual topics, violence and profanity while America is the largest producer of porn and violent movies/games. I also question the peace-bringer attitude, since america has started quite a few wars over the past few decades.

Well, I don't dislike Americans. I don't dislike anyone because of their nationality, the skin colour, their religion, their gender, their sexual orientation, etc.
It's just a few vocal people who do hate others that make people think we hate other people.
I am sure there are a lot of tolerant people on this site who are from Europe and do not hate Americans.

I don't dislike americans, I don't dislike anyone on the basis of their nationality. Every country has good and bad people, you have to give people a chance to find out if they are an asshole or not. Yes i'll poke fun at americans for stereotypical reasons at times, but then i'd expect them to mock me for being british too, if you can't laugh at yourselves then whats the point?

I disliked a certain American but havent heard of him for a while now so thats alright. Been in New York last December and enjoyed to meet people there.

Because we beat the British empire twice, switched to neutralism which got the French Angry, we supported pirates on the brits and French, we backed up the revolt in South America, beat up the people Spain couldn't, but on the plus side Germany loves us :]

I dislike certain Americans the same way I dislike certain Europeans, Asians, Africans etc.

Europe is made up of around 30 countries so this is a ridiculous generalisation.

The general reasons for dislike of America are:

- It has a high military presence beyond it's own borders.
- It claims victory or credit for things it has not done. A lot of inventions for example, and wars.
- Americans tend to be a lot more open compared to other countries, they tend to boldly state what they want and do it (which personally I like, I hate the pretentiousness of the British government).
- The stereotype of Americans is not a good one. Loud and obnoxious is usually the general idea, although most people with this viewpoint probably haven't met any beyond the internet.

These are not exclusive to European countries, nor are they particularly fair, seeing as the country is made up of millions of people, and most of those wouldn't be like this anyway.

Hell, beyond a few bizarre laws I think I'd prefer to live in America than here in England.

As an American, I'd have to say the whole "Let's fight a war," mentality of our last president, our hesitancy in adopting gay marriage and left-leaning views and the whole global-economic-collapse-thing. But I don't think that's all europeans for all americans.

It's not even that, trust me, most of us the world loves each-other, a few people just make it bad.

This whole USA vs Europe thing is just the best way of making people rage for no reason.

Haha, this has always got to me, generalizing one country is terrible enough, but an entire continent.

...this seems like a very, very bad idea. On topic though, suffice to say it has to do with the in-crowd out-crowd effect in psychology. People by nature are tribal, so they naturally think that their culture, or "tribe" is better than everyone else's tribe. In reality neither culture is better, just different.

Why do Americans assume Europeans don't like Americans? You're media, and you're prejudices against Europeans. Why do the French not like Americans? Because they didn't want to go to Iraq. Why do Canadians not like Americans? Because we didn't go too Iraq OR Vietnam. We even harboured American terrorists who were against the war in Vietnam, which means we are in fact working with the North Vietnamese, and therefore working for the USSR, just like Cuba, and therefore harboured the terrorists who launched the September 11 attacks.
