Why do you think people whine every time an easy mode is tacked onto a game? It's because they don't consider that maybe there's someone who isn't familiar with a controller and therefore easy modes ruin games. Because who wants new people making more money for this industry, right?
Having said that, we also might have a problem with insecurity. See, because COD and other related games aren't very deep but sell alot, there's a small community of internet professors out there that get scared at that notion. Therefore, anything that's not an art game is holding back and destroying the industry but "HOLY SHIT ELLEN PAGE IS VOICEACTING A GAME?! LET'S ALL KISS HER ASS!". I mean, I don't know who ellen page is, why should I care what game she's on? But, I digress. The point is that ever since roger ebert said "Games can never be art" we've since had this weird drive to make games more story based than gameplay based to impress some guy we hardly know, which is right up there with holding a jukebox towards a window of a cheerleader you haven't ever interacted with before and the jukebox is playing love songs.
Can't we just have fun and get on with it? No, of course we can't. When we're not fighting over bullshit hardware crap it's "My genre is deeper than yours so I'm smarter nyah nyah nyah". Part of this is nature I guess, after all if you're a fan of something you want more money for sequels for it and any negative reviews will end up losing it money and there's less chance of a sequel to that game or movie or book you like, and there's just no replacement. But you know what? Suck it up. Good things don't last forever, and you'll just have to find a nice alternative. That's life.
