Ok I've been trying to ignore this for awhile, but after Yahtzee's review of Warfighter I just can't anymore. Do gamer's have a bit of an ego? After watching his review I couldn't help but notice that everyone in the comments seemed to be mirroring his view that people that played games like Call of Duty and Battlefield didn't play "real" shooters. Do gamers tend to have moments like this? Moments where they see themselves as better than some other people because of the games that they play? Because I have to admit I'm kinda freaking out by all of the "people that play COD aren't real gamers," comments. Just something to think about.
I wouldn't really say it's an issue with gamers, you can see the same on Movie Bob's reviews, reviews on CNET, heck even a person writing about how horrible docomo (Japanese cell phone company) was for offering selection had a bunch of people posting their agreement. It'll piss you off when you disagree, and it will be nice when you agree, it's basic group think mentality and has been with us for much longer then games.

Oh as for the point COD players are real gamers, will thats just a huge fail at basic logic, but in a general sense they're just trying to make themselves feel better by their lack of enjoyment of something they pre-judged as not worthy of their attention.

By god, of course. Have you seen some of the tropes online dedicated to pointing out the inherent flaw in the mind of fans? What ever happened to just liking something or not liking it? By all rights, I'm like some sort of Rennaissance Fan for not belly-aching so much about things. Of course, now I'm complaining about people who complain too much, but that's just for irony's sake.

Yes. Just mention PC vs. Console and you'll see that in spades. Also gamers are notoriously self destructive of their own community do to being largely made of fringe of society type people. (at least the people we generally associate with the term 'gamer' which is lacking due to not usually applying to many casual gamers and such).

Are people who play those wii sports games not real gamers? Are people who play table tops not real gamers? Isnt lasertag already close to gaming?
I'd say it comes down what those games mean to you.

But it seems to me gamers constantly need to find something to feel better than others, not just score-wise.

Okami is a beautiful game, the concept art and switching between night and day environment and foes makes it into a form of art in itself, ofc now I just sound like a pretentious ego driven git so I guess that answers the question of this thread, cookies anyone?

On a more serious note, games are designed to gives us the gratification we lack receive from doing our menial gray jobs that we do out of necessity in order to get money, so we can buy more games that bring that sweet rainbow colored climax of imagining that irritating dog that cant learn to shit in someone else's shoes for once.

Sort similar to porn in that way, we cannot have these things in real life so we design a fantasy world where we get to imagine for a short 6 hour period that we are the rulers of the earth and anyone who tries to say otherwise gets a crusted urine soaked granny to the face.

I guess they do, but to be honest I never really pay all that much attention to it. I like what I like, and I play what I play. I also dislike what I dislike. Sometimes that erupts in the form of the typical 'they aren't real gamers if all they play is this shite', and sometimes I'll just rant on. I give it out expecting to get the same back, so I'm perfectly ok with how I go about things.

Having played a bunch of those more complex games of yesteryear, I struggle to see the tragedy.

Perhaps I'd be more sympathetic if that frustration didn't manifest in the form of obnoxious elitism and garden-variety snobbery.
I know what you mean....today on the bus I saw teo school kids excietedly unwrapping the collectors edition of black ops 2...it was cute, and I imagines a bunch of nerds getting their underware in a twist at the thourght

of coarse I did wonder how they afforded/actually bought the thing..they didnt look older than 12 or 13...I also cringed when he ripped up some of the nice cardboarde packaging to get the extras inside

oh and "kids with guns" by gorailaz started playing on my ipod at the time 0_0

My theory is, that people who don't like Yahtzee's opinion on "Realistic shooters" don't watch his show anymore, so when it comes to the comment section, most people will agree with him because they do really share his opinion, but the lack of disagreement, I believe is because people who do like the games, just don't watch Zero punctuation.

Better question, are gamers a hive mind?

Better question, Does it fucking matter what other mouthbreeders think?

Some gamers are like that. Then again, some gamers are pedophiles. I guess through this broken logic, all gamers are pedophiles? I know plenty of people who would think one was not a real gamer is one DIDN'T play CoD. And some who think D3 is amazing, some who hate TL2 and some who love TL2 so much they wish it had a cock they could chow down on.

I guess I am trying to point out that the views of gamers are varied and that is why I love being a gamer.

Of course! Most of us have spent our formative years being the quiet nerdy kid and so we had our ego's thoroughly nipped in the bud, now we have people to look down on we do it with gusto.

On Topic:

Do gamers have an attitude problem?
Of course they do, whenever someone discusses a game, you either don't like it or like it, and when two of the oppossing sides meet = release the shitstorm!!
This of course is also heavily applied to music as some of you might know...[/quote]

This, yeah people have different opinions it just happens a lot of people who have a similar one came together in the comments of warfighter.

No. There is not a single gamer with an ego, as evidenced by the behaviour of players and by the presentation of some shows on this very site.

Just kidding.

Personally I don't think opinions on a game are valid coming from people who haven't played it, and I also have a little bit of "stay away from me you filthy casual", in that I see exclusively Wii gamers (use your brain, I mean party games and Wii sports) and gamers who have only played one game type or series as less important than gamers who have played on a real platform (zing!) and who have wide experience of games.

I personally think that anyone who hasn't played Okami isn't a real gamer, or even a human being.

They are scum, worse than paedophile Nazis who talk in the movie theatre.

We should euthanise them all, for the greater good, so that our glorious gaming bloodline isn't diluted.
I vote we make it quick, clean and painless: So, use the powerslash brush technique and i think that should ensure things work out.

Let's just hope none of them are Kitsune's, or that method may just fall through slightly...

Having said that, we also might have a problem with insecurity.
I think you're onto something there. I think it's got a lot to do with the mainstream acceptance of games, and how it's no longer an all-nerds club.

Back in the day, gaming was the thing of geeks and nerds. And they thoroughly owned it. For some it was the only thing that gave them any form of 'elitism', for a lack of a better word. Now, some people just can't handle that it's not the exclusive club it once was. So they decry games that become easier, they resist letting outsiders 'into the circle'. They hate that they have to share their toys.

So they act superior. They treat anyone who doesn't play the arbitrarily decided upon right games as beneath them. The idea that people who aren't geeks and nerds might play games? Despicable.

[sub]An elitist, upon discovering someone outside the definition of gamer is playing games.[/sub]

Some of us just need to get over the fact that the audience for gaming has expanded, and that's that. Acting this way makes you look like a spoiled child, crying because you had to share with someone else. Those people need to grow the fuck up and stop being such entitled little shits for a change.

I wouldn't say CoD/BF players don't play 'real' shooters. Both games are shooter games, and they're real, not fictional games that don't exist.

I think it's more a 'CoD/BF players don't play a real -competitive- shooter'. Which is true. CoD/BF aren't proper competitive shooters. They're too much spray and pray. Too easy to get kills and all that. Someone made a nice analogy with a proper competitive shooter. CS:GO. Take the pump action shotgun thingy in CoD and only use that weapon to get kills. That comes close to how CS:GO plays with every gun. There is no easy spray and pray in CS.

Anyway, yes, gamers have an ego. Everyone does. No really, everyone has an ego. Even if it's subconsciously you'll always view yourself as better than others because of one reason or another. Gamers might be more vocal about it, though. Internet anonymity and all that.

People who play CoD or Battlefield can be real gamers. I just wouldn't think much of them as gamers if that's all they play.
