To answer your question, OP, yes. In fact, about half the gamers that agreed with Yahtzee there are actually gamers that play COD and BF on a probably regular bases. So they are also Hypocrits.
I'm just speaking from personal experience here on the Ego side...
Basically i'm pretty sure most of us here would consider ourselves "good" at games? we invest alot of time in the kick some ass and love it.
For me personally i don't have a great deal of other strengths so i pride myself on my ability to play games.
Pride can easily give way to ego at least this is my way of understanding it.

Without going into the Freudian jokes about everyone having an ego etc etc shutup, yes it is very noticeable among the gaming community.
I have previously conflated this with the metal community, having been a member of both, it is very easy to see how both community types, as people become more and more invested in them, become more and more self invested and self superior to their counterparts
As a metal fan, I am supposedly not a "true metalhead" despite being a fan of ManOwaR and Iron Maiden, simply because I like other, less "metal" metal bands like 5 finger death punch, or *shock* *horror* non metal music such as dubstep and rap.
Apparently this makes me no more a metalhead than a 12 year old Justin Bieber fangirl (and yes I get the hypocrisy). Then working with this side of the metal community becomes incredibly difficult because I "just don't get it" and I "couldn't truly appreciate" the music.
Now with videogames:
I play Halo, I LOVE Halo, I got kicked out of a clan for going to a midnight launch of a Halo game, because that makes me not a "true gamer"
If the crowd who abandoned me back then, could see my game collection now, with my Gears of War, Call of Duty and Forza titles proudly sitting among fallout 3, Kingdoms of Amalur, and Trials evolution, I am sure they would call for my ritualised execution.
this is because, unfortunately, we assign too much value as a community to the "purity" of our entertainment, like in education, a science major looking down his nose at a film studies professor, we each tend to believe that we embody the natural next step for people who enjoy our medium, and those who do not follow suit are wrong and should be told as such, loudly
Gaming has come a long way, but many gamers are still very self absorbed, and this is a negative thing look at the purists in the brony fandom, people who cling too tightly to the canon and treat people from "other" sides of the fandom with disdain, are the people directly causing the entropy and damage to the fandom that they are trying to prevent.
Simply put, people need to pull their heads out of their arses, Metalhead, Gamer and Brony alike and maybe we can all get along better as a result.

Just make sure you don't end up against a Wukong though, he's sort of a dick. I can just camp your lane hardcore-parkour if i'm jungling next time. Complete with an Oracles to give a big fuck you to his decoy shenanigans.
My jungle Amumu bandage skills are second to none I will have you know. I can just cry on them for tons of damage.
I need to practise more mid, i'm getting so bad at it... Every other randomer is instalocking mid and I don't feel like fighting them over it. Lucky jungle Amumu is a super effective fallback for me so i don't have to play support.
May have to change back to Draft since they're (barely) more civilised over there. The queue dodging gets so bullshit when you spend 10 minutes picking a team then some guy either instalocks Tryndamere Support last pick so someone dodges or someone does the exact same on the other team so they dodge instead.
You can even make sure to use your Superhero Queue Dodge ability whenever they lock Super Villian Wukong against you. Unless you're man enough to nerf him to stone anyway :3

As for Yahtzee's review, I just liked what he called the CoD-like games. "Spunkgargleweewee" lol.
I don't really think that one genre of games is "better" than another, it just comes down to personal taste.

Gamers have an ego like anybody else who is skilled/passionate about something. When I worked at a big-box retail store we had an attitude about how all the customers were dumb. When I'm grading papers with my fellow graduate assistants we mock the answers we perceive as foolish. When I worked as an editor at my student newspaper we had an ego against people who couldn't write well.
It's fun and a way to vent off steam while simultaniously equating ourselves with a specific group - after all, humans want to belong. We are always looking for a reason to make us seem superior, so if I'm more versed in gaming culture than some other person I'll let them know; just like they'd get an ego if talking to me about sports, something I care little about.

Like all of these "Do gamers exhibit X trait?" The answer is "Yes, but no more or less so than the rest of society."
You get people who "Cannot believe" you have not seen X film, or listened to X song. Who accuse you of not being a real "fan" because you haven't seen a band live, and so on.

you play sport in a competition, athletes need ego's for self mental motivation. Same applies here, gamers are playing a game and want to win thus build themselves an ego. Perhaps not the same style of ego for sports but still motivational for them none the less.
I mean thats the whole point of playing a game, to win + have fun? Unless you one of those strange people who think its all for solely the fun of it

I'll agree with everyone saying everyone has a streak of egotism in them but in some cases it's justified(having a career, graduating with honers) but when your ego is centered around I have a different hobby then you or I waste more time doing my hobby then you then you have a problem and need to get over yourself.

All human beings have varying degrees of an Ego. In many ways it is completely necessary for survival. All humans need confidence and some way of keeping that confidence. That's what an ego does. Sure some people are way more egotistical then they probably should be but that's their own problem. You cannot estimate the ego of an individual based off of any group or label they maybe associated with.
So gamers only have as much ego as any other non-gaming human does.

Gamers? It happens with any one is a certain group. Pick a side you think is best and then you're the best. Look at the wars created because of different beliefs.
As for Yahtzee's review of Warfighter and those who agree with him, they're just sick of military shooters saturating the market. Yahtzee made that clear awhile a go and now he takes the piss out of them when ever it comes up.
As far I'm concerned, whether they are real shooters or not is irrelevant, we really just need more genre's to choose from.

Gamers probably do more to prevent people from getting into the hobby than they do promoting it.
Take Diablo 3 for example:
- Your opinion isn't valid if you don't have at least 10,000 elite kills
- You can easily get booted from online play for having a low paragon level
- Anyone who has good gear must have cheated or used a credit card to get there
- Is something bothering you about the game design? Stop QQing and GTFO!
People constantly forget the Wii exists and scoff at motion control gaming, cell phone games and simple facebook games.
Have you ever once played any game easy? Better not let the community know about it.
Did you seriously buy that game on console over PC? Be prepared to reap the whirlwind.
