Graphics help in creating a real and convincing world. -Buzz word alert!- It helps immerse the player into the game.

I'll add in a repeat of "good graphics make a game good looking" being self-evident.

As for good art direction, this is a must. Otherwise you get a bland but superficially pretty game.

As it's been said before, it's all in the application. Fable 2 was state of the art in many ways, but I still found it unattractive because of how that advanced visual technology was put to work.

On the other side of the coin, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is still considered the black sheep of the franchise because of it's bizarre and comparatively low-end graphical style. The way those cartoony graphics were put to use, though, created a vivid, living world that remains my favorite LoZ environment to this day.

team fortress 2 gets over looked because its not ''arty'' i like it because its simple and the characters, voice acting,music...everything is very well thought out (its like a good looking women with no make up) it doesnt need to be over the top...portal is another one of these games that just nails it

I am usually worried about style and art direction rather than the realistic look. Bioshock in my opinion looks like shit and that is why I love it, because it is a destroyed utopia, it is SUPPOSED to look like shit. FF goes for a out of this world approach that is usually hit and miss to me.
