Do I really need xbox live?

Not sure if this was the right place to put this thread but whatever.
All my friends, in fact everyone I know has xbox live and whenever I say I don't they keep fucking hounding me to get it. And I don't want them to know I can't afford it 'cos I know they'll either feel sorry for me or skit me and I DEFINATELY don't want that.
So I ask you escapists, escapapians, esca... whatever I dont care what we're called, do I really need xbox live, is it really that neccesary.

Also, on a completley different subject, how do you put videos on these forums like you do images?

Well, do you really need any gaming system? For me, Xboxlive is pretty much the only thing it has over the ps3, and why I play it more often than my ps3, but if you don't want it, then it's not really worth the trouble, is it?

And to answer the second question, say I wanted to embed this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFu1HYhQOWA] video, I would take the url (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFu1HYhQOWA), and copy and paste the bit after the "=": OFu1HYhQOWA. Then type in [ youtube=(paste it here) ] without the spaces.

Try it.

It's not neccessary, but it's definetly worth the money.

If you can't buy it then you're not missing out all that much. Tell your friends you don't go on all that much or something.

Well, XBL isn't necessary, but it does enhance the gaming experience.
It allows for extras to be downloaded (Lots of good game add-ons).
Demos, movies, chat...
Without it, any glitches on a game will just be left as they are, whereas while connected to XBL it patches them.

and to post videos, it is [ youtube=(end of youtube url here] and no spaces inside the [ ]s.

EDIT: Xbox Live also comes in two tiers:
Gold: You pay for this, allows immediate download of all new content, online play, and XBL party chat (up to 8 people)
Silver: Free, some wait before new content becomes available, you can send messages, no party chat, comes with a free 1 month gold trial anyway. I think you can use private chat to talk to 1 person at a time.

First, Live is free if you just get Silver. You pretty much get everything except online play and a few high profile demos.

But yeah, it's great, and it's only 50 a year...

All you need really is food, water and shelter.

XBL primarily caters for multiplayer - if you mainly play singleplayer, or have a plethora of friends with which to play splitscreen, give it a miss. You can grab DLC pack and whatnot in the inevitable GOTY edition.

I don't think online is the best part of XBL. Personally I think the best bit is being able to talk to friends whilst playing, or being able to play some co-op games with friends (Eg: Saints Row 2 is absolutely AWESOME with 2 people ) Also you download games and such. Good stuff :]

Like the others said before me, depends on your gaming preferences.

And on a more personal note, this may sound really cliched, but if your friends will really drop contact with you (which is what I understand 'skit' is?) Then they're not really friends, just saying. maybe you're not giving them enough credit?
