Yes, I loved Counting Stars as well! :D

Also there's the Hobbit 2 soundtrack. I know a lot of people don't like Ed Sheeran, but the song itself is really nice. (and it's The Hobbit, guys!)

I can't think of any good albums that came out, but there's been a few singles that are pretty good. It just depends on your taste, really.

You are complaining that the music of 2013 is too mainstream (and bad)? How about a decent song making fun of that?

Except for this I can't think of anything, but I think things will get better.

So, now that I'm feeling all down and depressed, I'd like you, yes you there, average Escapist user, to recommend me your favourite song(s) from 2013!!! It doesn't matter what genre or what artist, just the stuff that you like and want to share with me and the rest and the community.
I just made this list for my site the other night. Here you go: http://zarecords.com/2014/01/13/top-13-for-2013/
It includes stuff like Palms, Midday Veil, Fiordmoss, Windhand, Cult of Luna, Suuns and 7 others.

I will also strongly recommend Steven Wilson's new album - "The Raven that Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)", I think it's by far the best album of 2013.

Enjoy! :)

Reflektor by Arcade Fire. The album is my favourite of 2013 and the actual song "Reflektor" is my favourite song of 2013.

Honorable mentions go to Yeezus (yes you can actually hear Kanye's ego swelling in this album but he actually is quite talented) and Sunbather. I generally hate screemo but Sunbather features a weird combination of styles that all come together for a chaotic, trans experience.

Bonus: most overrated song that made my ears bleed with how overplayed it was goes too "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.

Just to add some color - I normally love me some Kanye West, but I feel that it's important to qualify Yeezus. Don't go into Yeezus expecting another College Dropout or MBDTF, because that's not what Yeezus is. It is, in my mind, a minimalist dance album overflowing with ego. I went in expecting a well-crafted hip-hop album and got something I would have felt more comfortable with on a dimly-lit dance floor crowded with impossibly good-looking women while I drown my apprehensions in a red solo cup filled with something the guy at the punch bowl called jungle juice. It's that sort of album in my opinion, and that's not good or bad, it just is what it is.

Also, yeah, Get Lucky could be weaponized at this point.

Counting Stars is that rare song by a pretty boy pop band that nearly everyone agrees is good.

OH MAN THERE WAS THIS TOO - Elvis Costello collaborated with The Roots on an album called Wise Up Ghost. It's bonkers and shouldn't exist but it does and I forgot how cool that is.

I'm also surprised that we made it this far without a mention of Royals by Lorde. Seriously, that song is infectious.

2013.....

......and music?

Sorry, nope. Nothing found. 'Artists' like Lady Gaga, and Justin Beiber still exist. Music has been dead for years because we've lowered our collective standards and not truly listened to anything. Lyrics used to tell stories worth hearing, now all they do is point out what someone has or doesn't have.

Music has been dead to me for a long time.
You do know that bad pop music has always been around, right? Like, give me any decade where we had pop charts and tell me there isn't some silly love song on there. And its your life and I'm not gonna say you should lower your apparently high standards if you don't want to. But an extreme statement like "Music is Dead" might be a little to far.

OT: I've been getting into hip hop more and more this year, which is a change for me:
I loved Watskys newest album "Cardboard Castles". Just a few songs I liked from that album(The whole album is great if you like rap):
If your looking for comedy, I always liked some lonely island:
My favorite album this year was the MMLP2 since I am a massive Stan, although I wouldn't recommend listening to it if you're new to eminem. There are alot of callbacks to other albums:

That's because something bad has happened to Todd and he's been REALLY grumpy and snarly. I'm a bit worried.

No, seriously. Watch his "Demons" review again. I can't find anything wrong with the song, and he acts as though it killed his dog. What I'm saying is, Todd should be taken with grains of salt right now, because he seems to WANT to hate everything.

Anyways:

ugh I hate this opinion. the internet allowed for an explosion of subgenres, which means you have to dig a bit deeper to find all the great stuff but it's there and you're fucking using the internet right now ffs no one cares about Bieber and Gaga I bet you don't even know who godspeed you black emperor are

The only two albums I'm even aware that came out this year are Melophobia by Cage the Elephant and Muscle Memory by Jamie Lenman. Both are fuckin' sweet though.

It's depressing how much I've lost touch with current music releases as time passes.

Avantasia's The Mystery of Time had a lot of good songs:

Amon Amarth's Deceiver of the Gods also had a lot, but the song "Coming of the Tide" was by far my favorite:

Finally, Children of Bodom's Halo of Blood gave us some truly memorable songs, especially Bodom Blue Moon:

I think a large part of the reason why the reception was so immensely polarised was because Yeezus's intention was so ambiguous. People dismiss it as just a narcissistic attempt to create something edgy but the overall theme relates a lot to american culture in the context of race. I.e. Black Skinhead, New Slaves, the video for Bound 2, and that gritty sound to the album which almost makes Kanye look like he's trying to go punk. In his own style, of course.

2013 was actually pretty awesome, at least for my music tastes. I don't understand how anyone that claims to have an interest in music and knowledge of how to use a computer can fail to find something they like, failing being really lazy.
I defy you to find nothing awesome there.
For me, last year was fantastic- every album that I was looking forward to was even better than I expected and I stumbled across some more awesome stuff.

My favorite album from 2013 was probably the EP 'Ascension to the Throne ov Self' by british band Sidious, it's symphonic blackened death metal, in particular the song "Nihilistic Regeneration".

here's teh video

Now I'll list here the best albums from 2013 in my opinion

Land of the Evening Star - by Dark Forest (I'm not sure if this one is from 2013 or 2012, but it's great anyway you should check it out) [black metal]
Exodromos - by Wormed [tech death metal]
Zapotectron - by Disfigured Divinity [prog death metal]
Enantiodromia - by Last Sacrament (this one is death metal but has a lot of doom influences)
The Migration - by Scale the Summit [prog metal]
The Cancer Within - by Infernaeon [blackened death metal]
Transcend Reality - by Aenimus [tech deathcore]
One Chosen by the Gods - by Aether Realm [death metal]
IV: Mandragora - by Botanist [black metal]
Black Metal unification (split) - by Zagan and Hymnorg [black metal]
Ghosts Of The Mountains - by Appalachian Winter [black metal]
Adventum - by Scorned Deity [blackened death metal]
Transcendence - by Seker [prog death metal]
Sanctuary (EP) - by Koan Sound & Asa (this one isn't metal at all, it's transcendental electronic music)
