No I don't think all Americans are stupid, just most of them.

All kidding aside, every country has it's sterotypes it's not exclusive to you Americans. I bet you have stereotypical perceptions of people from other countries too so it goes both ways.

I'm an American who has spent a healthy chunk of his life living in other countries, and I've learned two things about Americans through it:

1. Not everyone from other countries has the same opinion of us.

2. We really do have a tendency to be hopelessly myopic and ignorant of what happens outside our borders. It's not that Americans are "stupid", so much as many of us have a tendency to think that a lot of what happens outside America just doesn't matter. Charlie Sheen is more important to learn about than geography, endless analysis of our own politics is more important to us than even a basic grasp of how other countries' politics work.
The funny part is, our geography has probably helped lead to this attitude. Think about it, for years we were both politically and geographically isolated from most of the world because we had an ocean on each side. We enacted the Monroe doctrine, meaning that we couldn't exactly be neighbors with any European power with the exception of the UK's ties with Canada. Meanwhile, in places like Europe, it's many nations and cultures rubbing up against each other with a sense of national pride and no ocean to separate them with the exception of the UK being an island (and possibly Holland's 'water barrier' but that was more military than cultural.) Then, throw in the latest two world wars where we came in as the big hero in one way or another, and you get a sense of national pride and unity. The Cold War certainly didn't help remove that feeling, and if you look at the age of many of our politicians, it makes sense that they're still representing the United States in that manner. Given time, how the United States acts as a whole will change based on how the youth become adults, and hopefully the internet will help lead to a more global-minded generation in command.

Of course, things could go horribly wrong or we could keep focusing on trivial things for years to come. :p

I'm an American, and I still think all Americans are stupid.

But more on the serious side, Americans believe all the English are Snotty, All The French Are Cowards, All Italians are in gangs, and all Kenyans break the World Speed Record. We All Overgeneralized. Just like saying everyone thinks we're stupid.
If you think your stupid why even put your opinion out there, why not simply wait for a more intelligent person to tell you what you should think?

You should think that not all Americans are stupid and that people who generalize, even cultures that they belong to are bigots.

Its just another convenient stereotype. I've heard it so much, I guess I just sort of tuned it out after awhile...

I don't like the arrogance. I'm not saying this is the case for everyone, but even the politicians do it. I don't know how many times I have been watching television and heard "America is the greatest country in the world". Really? By what standard? There are countries with more people, better economies, higher education levels. The sheer arrogance of proclaiming your country the greatest in the world is mind boggling.

I hate racists any intelligent person can see the fallacy of their generalizations, if you can't then what does that say about you? I especially can't stand the fucking Americans that have joined in on this fucking hate mongering! you are not the exception moron they don't like you either.

Absolutely not! I've met quite a few American scientists, and they're brilliant at their work. There are a lot of intelligent, cultured American writers and musicians. I certainly don't think all Americans are stupid.

However, there are a lot of ignorant Americans. Ignorance is not stupidity - it's merely a lack of knowledge. You have a lot of Americans these days who don't care to learn about the world or their own history, and in some cases, seem to be downright PROUD of their ignorance. Even worse, there are a lot of Americans who sneer and look-down upon people who are knowledgeable, calling them "elitists" or "intellectuals". Since when was intellectual ability a bad thing?

This is why US universities are having to rely more and more upon students from overseas. America has some INCREDIBLY intelligent people, some of the world's BEST scientists and institutions..... but the culture is turning against them. Scientists are ridiculed as "Eggheads" or "Nerds", whereas "bad-ass" rapstars and basketball players, who have never invented or really contributed anything to society of material worth in their lives, are venerated and applauded.

America used to respect science and technological achievement. It used to respect those who studied hard and used their imagination. It used to actually listen to what educated people had to say. Now it doesn't. Ignorance is seen as a virtue. Education is seen as a suspicious "values-warping" threat. And anyone's opinion, no matter how IGNORANT must be "respected" since of course, "what do the scientists know?!".

Americans are not stupid. But they are ignorant and they are neglecting science and mathematics. You are one of the only developed regions on the Earth in which the majority believe in Creationism. The majority of your teenagers can't even name the past 10 presidents (whereas I can, and I'M NOT AMERICAN! Obama, G.W Bush, Clinton, Bush senior, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, Roosevelt, Hoover, and I can go on all day. I even know what they are famous for) and know next to nothing about their history. Americans forget things that happen in their own country so damn fast. The Financial Crisis and Big Bail Out of the banks occurred under The Republicans in 07, yet a substantial amount of Americans have COMPLETELY forgotten that fact and now blame Obama for the bad economy. The Republicans controlled the economy for 8 years and destroyed it, and now you blame the guy who comes next?

I don't view the Americans as stupid - well, at least, no more stupid than any other population on the face of this earth. But they are wilfully, almost proudly ignorant. They hate facts. They don't want to read up on their own history (or at least, they don't want to read a book that might disagree with them and shatter their own illusions on their nation's history). They no longer respect Science or Mathematics - which are the KEYS to your military strength. Your missiles and your tanks and your advanced radar and your jet fighters are designed BY SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, USING MATHEMATICS! Those weapons don't fall out of the sky! They are made by people who studied hard and who used their minds! And you don't respect them! You don't fund them! You don't care about them! You mock their knowledge, you disregard their opinion and you despise them for disagreeing with you, despite ALL they have done for your nation.

America is still the technological powerhouse of the world, but that is changing! It's changing! I know plenty of scientists who are leaving because they can't get funding in the US. I know of labs being shut down because your government thinks building a sports stadium is SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than funding, Oh, I don't know, a CANCER research lab! You'll spend hundreds of millions of dollars venerating and celebrating the exploits of "Snoop Doggy Dogg", who has never done a damn worthwhile thing in his entire life, and yet give a pittance to a charity that wants to advance the cause of science!

The fact that people value trash like Lady Gaga over a Nobel Prize winner means that your nation is going downhill, and fast. Which is a shame. I like America. I really do. I plan to visit or work there one day. I love your constitution, I love what you have accomplished, and you have accomplished a LOT. But now, you are throwing it all away, and you are doing it with your own two hands.

Certain things give America this aura of stupidity. The fact that you'll fight to the death your right to have firearms despite having the highest number of shooting-related deaths in the developed world and then will turn around and fight anyone who wants to give you the right to healthcare, (maybe to treat those gunshot wounds.) That's just weird. And yeah, the fact that you re-elected a complete failure of a man who when hearing the words "the country is under attack" did nothing for seven whole minutes. There are Americans who will take a stance and stick by it despite knowing nothing about the issues, and this happens on both sides of the two-party system. There are tailor-made news stations so people don't have to be informed that they are mistaken and can be spoon-fed the world in the way they want to see it which further fuels their ignorance. Then we have the MTV programs that paint a picture of Americans are stupid, the Jersey Shores and that ilk. America exports itself as a culture of stupidity.

The shame is that some of the most brilliant minds in the world are Americans, it just seems these people are completely overshadowed by this loud minority of absolute fucking numpties.

I don't think all Americans are stupid.

I do think they take stereotypes WAY to seriously. In fact, they take everything remotely negative way to seriously.

Sure, it's nice to treat everyone as an individual, and most of us do when we meet real people, but when talking about whole countries with huge populations it is human nature to work fof what we see most frequently.

I'm an Englishman living in Australia, I get ALOT of "Whinging Pom" and comments about drinking tea, bad teeth, etc... and I just fire back by telling them I was sent here to be a prison guard for all the convicts. Nobody takes it seriously, we all have a laugh.

Similar situations involving Americans in the past have only resulted in them becoming extremely offended and accusing me of being "Anti American".

I'm an American and while my country has done some things that I do not agree with I really don't understand why people judge everyone in America to be dumbasses? i hear things like "for those of you who are too american to understand" or "what is it with Americans and.." and it just goes on and on and on and i just dont understand. I'm not that person people seem to think i am just because of my american accent. What's with all the hostility?
This could be a reason why:

I don't get it. Half of this is an audience laughing nervously at completely reasonable responses to inane questions. The other half is people failing to call the guy out when he asks them to agree with things that aren't true. If you dress up like a news reporter and ask them to congratulate Canada on preserving their national igloo, what do you expect them to do? Nobody has any reason to care whether it's true or not.

That said, the 'unquestioningly agreeing with any proposed military action' segment is a little unsettling. Although the 'Chechnya and Saskatchewan' question was pretty obviously misleading. What a bunch of idiots, trying to make sense of a misheard word through context! Oh, Americans.

The U.S. is a massive country whose culture tells people to be as loud and ignorant as possible to become famous. Ever watched american television?

fat, stupid, obnoxious people sell

Seriously this. Jersey Shore (excuse my crude language) ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. A friend of mine got me to watch 1 episode I can't even look at him the same way how are your eyes able to maintain focus on that crap. Then there are the thing my mom watches not as bad but still The Bachelor I hate reality TV. Ya but anyway 90% of TV show in this country are just terrible. I can only think of a few good TV shows South Park, Archer (if you haven't seen this watch it. It is brilliant.) some of the A&E and TNT series are good Walking Dead and Falling Skies.

You have to realize the more bombastic things that reach our ears is that they can't pinpoint where Mexico and Canada, their neighbors, are, and even then, some of them can't point to their own country. That being said, I've met several smart and intuitive Americans who obviously kill the stereotype. But I've also met a few who fit it. Also, the ones who tend to be smarter have gone beyond going outside of America to be a tourist, so that may be part of it.

The reason ppl think Americans are stupid is cos they watch those shows Australia makes where they go ask Americans questions and they give dumb answers like 'When was 9/11?' 'uuuuugh 25th March' then they go hahaha Americans are dumb, and they're too dumb to realize they edit out all the correct answers cos they wouldn't be funny.

every nation has a negative attachment, and if you really truly believe them then your a fool. just make sure you know that where your born doesn't affect who you are.
in fact there's a perfect song for this occasion.

I'm American and my dad is one of those stereotypical americans as in when he does tae bo he says stuff like "Take that you Muslim scum"
or "Leave the American people alone you infidels" or his collection of guns
