I think so. I use myself as proof as I used to be pretty weird in middle school. I'm a lot more open than the way I was, all shelled up away from everyone.

I'm still a coward, but I'm working at it so maybe it'll change sometime in the future.

Yes. But it's not a overnight omginsta change.

But the core of a personality doesn't, just the more detailed things

Depends on my mood.

Sometimes, I think people can change, but it takes traumatic events or something similar to happen.
Sometimes I think that people are who they are, no matter what happens.
You...do realize that this means you, as a person, are capable of changing on a day-to-day (hour-to-hour) basis, in order to adapt to a given situation? Wouldn't that mean that over a long period of time, your behaviors are going to adapt to your environment, thus change?

I'm sorry, but this sort of question kinda pisses me off. Change is one of the few constants there are; if you're questioning whether or not it's there, you're just not paying enough attention. Is there air in your lungs? Is there as much now as there was a moment ago? No? Then something has changed!

Of course, the issue here isn't change in and of itself, but how a person wants something to change. Which is an entirely different issue altogether.

Apologies for my...misdirected anger.

If something is inherently you, you cannot lose it. People do not change, they simply change the things that they use to identify themselves to you, or should i say, their ideal self. However if we were to speak objectively, you change with each passing moment.

OT: Yes, but it takes a long time for any major change to take effect.

Speaking objectively, you are your conciousness. Your conciousness isn't real. It's just the result of chemical reactions. So, It's hard to say that "you" can change or not because "you" only exist subjectively.

Depends heavily upon your definition of "person," I guess.
But I don't change - I still hold both contradictory opinions, at the same time.
Depending on my mood, I'll voice one or the other.
You just said your mood changes, adapts. Does that not count?

That being said, I understand what you're saying, and I know it's not the same thing. The point I was trying to make, though, is there's a difference between "change" and "what you want", and what the thread is actually about is the latter.

Apologies Abound

I've always said that people never change, only the situation they are in.

But I'm kind of wavering on that statement, I admit there is a chance some people can drastically change who they are.

"People always end up the way they started out. No one ever changes. They think they do but they don't. If you're the depressed type now that's the way you'll always be. If you're the mindless happy type now, that's the way you'll be when you grow up. You might lose some weight, your face may clear up, get a body tan, breast enlargement, a sex change, it makes no difference. Essentially, from in front, from behind. Whether you're 13 or 50, you will always be the same. ...It doesn't matter if I'm glad. There's no freewill. I mean, I have no choice but to chose what I choose, to do as I do, to live as I live. Ultimately, we're all just robots programmed arbitrarily by nature's genetic code"

People change. Or they have the potential to change at least, though most people don't take it.

The big one is probably the transition from high school to university. I have changed so much my acquaintances from high school tell me consistently how different I am now.

You're talking about immediate change. Experiences shape a person's reactions to various things.

The question is impossible, because the answers are a difinite "HELL YES!" in some ways and in some ways "HELL NO!"

It's both, depending on what exactly do you mean. People are constantly changing on some levels, but will always be the same "person" they ever were, are, or will be.

If you believe people do not change you obviously have little life experience.
