Do the Devil May Cry fans have a right to complain about the new DMC?

All of the complaints concerning lore are rather invalid because as of yet it's basically all one big black hole.

yes but i think you should at least give them a chance to explain the game story before raging, if they have a good story reason for the changes to the awesome dante i am all for the game, except the angel part that just seems stupid

Woah woah woah. Half angel? Fuck no!

Where has Dante gone? Not that this is new but it feels like, to me, that Devil May Cry left the party shortly after 3 came out. 4 was a pile of mediocre manure and 5(1?0?whatever) doesn't look like its going to change the game, in a positive way, that much.

I'm definately going to give this game a try. But if its anything short of amazing I am completely done with Devil May Cry because it will be dead. Not that it isn't dead all ready.

Christ, this is a huge and well put together post, but I think that both Yahtzee and Jim(quisition) said it before: hardcore fans are never pleased, never satisfied. The new DMC looks fantastic, the gameplay footage looks awesome and until we have this game in our consoles at home, we cannot make a proper judgement.

I loved Devil May Cry 1, avoided Devil May Cry 2 (for obvious reasons) and failed at Devil May Cry 3, because I am not very good at the more difficult games. I didn't try Devil May Cry 4, because it looked like too much of the same thing, and it DOES get BORING. For the same reasons that I can't understand how people can play a new version of Zelda/Mario every 2 years, which is essentially the same every iteration, I am happy to see that DMC is getting refurbished.
I hope you're aware of that the newest Legend of Zelda game is almost 6 years old, then there's a 4 year gap before the one before then 3 years for a Zelda game that can't be compared to anything else.

OT: I don't want the game any less because of they way it looks. When a developer actually tries to renew things I always think that's a good thing. Even in the case of the Sonic games. Sure, they might not do good things, but they don't repeat themselves completely for every game. I think this could be a good game, but hey only time will show.

You could always... y'know, not buy it.

If there's one thing publishers and developers will pay attention to, it's poor sales.

Personally, I can't blame them for ignoring fans. Fans whine no matter what you do.

Thank you for actually putting in the time to write why everyone's pissed off rather than just saying that "it sux".

Yes, they/we do have a reason to complain. And for those who say that it's only action and the rest doesn't matter, then we could very well play as a stick figure with a gun killing Random Dude No. 4 in a Random Map. It did have a story and a background and tossing it away now is disregard towards the old fans. It had comic books, anime series, novelizations and damn action figures so this guy mattered as more than just "blank slate guy you happen to murder stuff with".

They could have made a new game, could have made a new character in the same world but they chose to do this and I'm not sure it will be towards their benefit. Heck, people who liked DMC but hate it now might pirate on principle.

I don't even like Capcom but bought all the DMC games because I liked Dante. Without the old him, I see no reason to keep interested.

The thing that bothered me the most was the angel part, though. I really don't see how this might end well.

Well the way I see it.

Did we pay for the previous games? Yes.
Do we pay the developers wages? Yes.
Does the new Dante look fucking horrible? Yes.

Three ticks, we have every damn right to complain.

Well, I'm not a hardcore fan by any stretch. I've only played DMC4 and I will probably never play the previous DMC games but this still has me upset.

Honestly, DMC has never really mattered to me in the story department. I always filed it somewhere between "Batshit" and "Bananas". I can understand all the fan rage. Fans are never pleased, but honestly, I played the games because they were fun (except 2 dear god). Just like God of War. I hated Kratos. I was so glad he got his in the end. He was a monster. A villain. Not justified in his killing. But the gameplay was damn fun.

Same goes for DMC. I honestly don't care about Trish's jiggle-physics or how two-dimensional Dante and Nero are (Hint: Very). I played those games for the awesome combos and powers and SuperStylish! :p

Dante's pretty well fleshed out, compared to the average game hero these days, and a metric truckload better than Nero.

But this game looks like what would happen if they took one of gaming's strongest female characters and turned her into a submissive pansy... glad no such game like THAT exists.
What about Metroid Other- *gagged and dragged off into black van*

I simply don't consider it as a DMC game, thus I don't even have to say I'm not buying it since it's not even a dmc game to begin with thus why buy it, you know?

Bayonetta has inherited Dante's will (One Piece style) so I'll just focus my attention to that series, that's all there is to be said really. This is just one more action game out there with an unfortunate coincidence of sharing a name with another series, nothing worth getting bent over.

Well, as long as you don't call it Devil May Cry, and the gameplay's good, I might pick it up. But yeah, Dante is so not Dante, that they might as well just make a completely new game.

In short, of course they have a right to complain. And for almost exactly every point you laid out rather well. I sincerely applaud your disply.

There is nothing I have seen in ANY trailer, art or image promo that doesn't just scream "Some emo putz trying his cosplay idea of Dante". Everything about what they've done to the series looks like the idea of a badass as invented by some comp sci major who's never been in a fight in his life, but he sure will tell you about all the books he's read about what a badass is...

Dante was Bruce Campbell in his twenties with an extra two helpings of badass. He could fuck-start a motorcycle and still have enough in him to quaff a sixer and spit out a snappy line or three. He could whipass on an entire army of whatever you got and still give a girl proper lovin'. This re-boot angst boy is to dante what Spider Man three was to men in general... UGH...

I'll agree there. In this age of grizzled white angry beefcakes Dante has become a relic of an age past. I'm not saying I hate Dante. I liked him. Always good for a laugh, he is. I just mean that if this new DMC is going to go the extra mile to tell a story instead of pre and post-mission placeholder cutscenes I will give it a chance.

But perhaps I'm being too critical of the old DMCs. One was a blast. Four was fun. The third one was great, my favorite of the four. And story-wise it was decent. Nothing ever truly wow'd me throughout the series, though. The stories always felt just sort of there to drive the action. I was never personally invested in Dante because I always knew he would win. That he was invincible, nearly.

I don't know. I'm just trying to be optimistic. Seems as though nothing will be done to change this new Dante. May as well give it a shot. And if we all hate it, we can clamor about it. Then maybe next game we'll get back the cocky wise-cracking devil we all fell in love with so many years ago. :)

I wait for the games release but so far I think fans are attempting to make too much out from the trailers, and forget things like its a prequel.

That is oh so very true. Dante isn't generic space marine number #343, he's fucking Dante and he's got a story to him and a tonne of media behind him to prove it outside the games.

I should know, i've read and seen most of them..but i could never find the action figures.
