Do the Devil May Cry fans have a right to complain about the new DMC?

they can complain if they want, but really when you look at it only a few things have changed; his hair, his heritage, his devil trigger, and... well... honestly i cant think of much else. his personality seems pretty much intact, even if he does swear more but lets be honest who didn't in their youth right? and by youth i mean he's 20 so he's not a whiney teenager because A. we havent heard him whine, and B, he's not a teenager. as far as ive seen the only recurring characters are Dante, Vergil, and Mundus. usually with Mundus, Trish is a no brainer, but we have yet to see her. The relationship between Dante and Vergil. I'm not quite sure if they've changed that or not yet, because we don't know if they don't turn on each other before the end. if you were to clean up dante's face and put longish white hair he'd look almost exactly the same, except more like a person than a shirtless anime character. the gameplay looks more or less the same, just with a few new moves. hopefully they add a little more to make this DmC stand out more than previous games in terms of combat. im happy the bosses more represent problems in our world today than just ZOMG A CENTAUR MADE OF FIRE WITH A LAVA SWORD (yes, im looking at you berial). so basically, yes they have a right to complain, but their complaints aren't legitimate to me. They gotta think of something besides the look, the frame rate, and what they THINK might happen in the story, but lets face it we dont KNOW whats going to happen yet so we may be pleasantly surprised. I'm willing to give it a fair shot. EDIT: also if you end up banning this just because its not bashing the new look of Dante, im just gonna post it again you have no right to ban comments because their opinions are different than yours.

Ugh, I think the reboot has promise, AND I've played all four games of the Devil May Cry series.
I admit, when I first saw the reveal trailer I was pretty pissed, but I came to like it.

I forgot where I saw the picture, but I saw one where they compared DmC Dante to the other Dante. DmC Dante has almost the EXACT same bone structure as every other Dante. Plus, he's been living on the street since his mother (and supposedly Vergil at the time) died. He's not gonna look well fed OR nourished (and judging by the reveal trailer, he's also being tortured). DmC Dante LOOKS like a guy living on the street who doesn't give a rat's ass about his appearance.

Of course he's not gonna be some jokester after witnessing his mother dying. That just doesn't fucking happen. That's not saying he WON'T grow up to be the Dante we know in DMC 1 and 3. It's just showing the journey to that time period. A lot of teenagers go through a rebellious and angry stage before finally settling in.

As for the hair change (I commend you for not focusing too much on that though), it can easily be explained by hair dye. Demons are on the look out for him, white hair is obviously gonna stick out a tad bit. AND if you've watched the latest trailers, his hair HAS turned white while fighting.

As for the angel thing, I'll admit, I was also thrown by the change. I'm not sure what to make of it except to say that it is a pretty big retcon. The only way I can sort-of explain it is if Eva became a "fallen angel" after falling in love with Sparda, and thus was cast down from being an angel and became a human. I honestly really wish that Capcom will let DmC be considered a reboot instead of a prequel just for the sake of not being bogged down by continuity (though the series in general doesn't really give a rat's ass about continuity at times though). But I mean, who actually PLAYED any of the past DMC's for the story? Honestly? The writing was atrocious and the story was merely a driving force for moving the gameplay forward.

Also, it's completely unfair to compare inFamous 2's Cole character change to DmC's character change. Sucker Punch CHANGED Cole's appearance because everyone and their mother whined about his gravel in a bucket voice and his near-skinhead appearance. Sucker Punch MADE the change because they thought people would like it. They were completely shocked by the negative backlash the change had and changed it back BECAUSE they made the change in the first place to cater to fans.
For DmC, Ninja Theory initially came up with designs more similar to the original Dante, but CAPCOM (that's right CAPCOM) was the one that shot them down and kept insisting that the character change be even bigger, more drastic. They KNEW there was gonna be a shitstorm about the design change but went ahead with it anyway.

And just FYI (because I see so many people always saying this) the character design is PUNK. Not EMO. PUNK. Get your stereotypes right people. Take a good look at the Sex Pistols and then take a look at DmC Dante. The similarities are OBVIOUS.

Plus, it's not the character that matters the most with Devil May Cry (a GAME), it's the gameplay.
And judging from the trailers, it looks perfectly fine. Ninja Theory is famous for its story-telling prowess, so if they can keep the gameplay of DmC at the same level of previous games of the series, they'll probably improve the shit writing and give an actual story (gasp!) so in all honesty there is a good chance of success.

And for anyone who's like "I WON'T BUY THE GAME THEN DURHURHUR I'LL SHOW CAPCOM. THAT WAY THEY'LL HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE -ORIGINAL- DMC", you're an idiot. As shown with Megaman, Capcom will just throw its hands in the air and just throw Devil May Cry and any future sequels into a trash can, regardless of what fans want. Rent the game, and then send angry emails to Capcom. That way it'll show that you actually KNOW what you're talking about.

Fuck, I told myself I wouldn't type a lot, but I ended up doing it anyway.
I'm not saying people aren't allowed to dislike the game, I think they're are people arbitrarily hating on it without giving it a chance, which really isn't fair (at all).
We should wait till it's released, see EXACTLY how Dante's changed (and how he changes throughout the game), see if the gameplay can live up to that of the rest of the series, and then make our catcalls and angry denouncements.

Okay, Cheery out.
what he said.

I enjoyed the old games, I'm prepared to enjoy this new one. These are just the same complaints we've heard before, and yet I still find it hilarious that people are actually upset about the canon of a Capcom series.

Capcom make great games, but they write terrible stories, even by the already low standards of video games, so getting upset that a new developer is going off-canon is ridiculous.

I know it's a cliche to say this, but anyone who is genuinely upset over a video game needs to get a life.

Yes you do have a right to complain, but its all about how do you put your words. For example shall we take a closer look at the youtube comments at TGS 2010 trailer.

FUCK NINJA THEORY, they ruined everything

This is a prime specimen of a shitty comment that has no real ground under beneath its feet.
No explanation HOW they ruined DMC, why didnt I like it or anything that has any value in a good conversation about a videogame. Just swearwords with capital letters and aura of annoying 12-year old kid high of sugar. And the whole hair fiasco... I dont even want to bring that up.
And my humble opinion about this game is that it is jolly fucking fantastic! I think that Dante has now some depth and edge compared to that cool and stylish but very clichéd Dante of DMC3. I like both of them and will be playing both DmC: Dino Mino Cino and DMC 3 and 4. So conclusion is that whether you like a game or not it is your own problem, just when you complain please use more of your brain capacity than a annoying 12 year old from XBOX Live.

While I respect that ppl want different things from different games, some fans do need to be more open minded rather than automatically hating things, too me it seems like not been able to see the wood for the trees.

Imo fans should try to get over it and consider it a different series. What is important is that the game is in the technical hack and slasher genre, like Bayonetta and old DMC and Ninja Gaiden, games like this don't come along too often especially in the current AAA market which caters more towards gamers who don't like these type of games.

SO I ASK ALL THE DMC FANS THIS:

Which would you rather play? A game that is similar to DMC which is atleast in the same sub genre? Or something like Arkham Asylum / God of War where its almost press X to do cool stuff?

I personally care more about the viability of this sub genre more than classic DMC itself, I would rather this game do well rather then let the sub genre sink into obscurity or go the way of NG3.

I wish DMC fans would be more like Metal Gear fans who hated on MGR at first because it wasn't MGS, but now have accepted that it isn't MGS and are been positive about the spin off. Now the game is getting good hype, which means more positive marketing and better sales.

Now look at DMC, the only press this seems to getting is about this BS fan rage, no one is interested if the game is good or not. This is just like Binary Domain which bombed hard and broke the back of SEGA, despite been a very good example of a cover based shooter.

While I understand why Dante fans are angry, personally I for the first time considered playing this series. The original Dante has fancy long anime hair, a two-hander and looks about as stereotypical as he could be. Perhaps his personality makes up for his looks, but I wouldn't want to touch the older games with a long stick.

New Dante is a psycho with a short cut and he looks fun. I guess the company decided to risk aggravating old fans in order to draw in new ones. If that was the plan, they succeeded.

Yes because the fans are still angry about the hair, and not because of the terrible gameplay.

Dude... watch this

That's how old Dante rolls. If you call that "unfun" I guess one of us has a really strange definition of what that means.

Ya know, I was pretty pissed a few years ago when the first trailer for DMC came out. I was pissed that everything in the game series that I'd fell in love with was just suddenly changed. But over time, I've come to be okay with it, and I'm willing to give Capcom a chance to prove themselves.

Part of what makes me willing to give this new game the time of day is keeping in mind the fact that this /is/ supposed to be an alternate universe game. Therefore, technically they can change whatever they want.

I've been told that Capcom does a lot of this. But, I don't know... we play Bethesda games knowing they're going to be riddled with glitches. Equally, we fall in love with Capcom games knowing that they're going to mess with the franchise, one way or another. Honestly, I wish they'd take a lesson from other game developers that actually take the opinion of their fans and put it into practical practice.

But, hey, like I said, I'm a huge fan and I'm going to buy the game regardless of what they do to it.

Whilst I'm not a big DMC fan, I can definitely understand being pissed off when the developers decide to fuck around with one of your favourite characters for no particular reason. Hell, imagine the shitstorm if Nintendo pulled this with Link? People would flip their collective shit.

Curses! I've been fooled into aiding them in their black magic!
