Do the Oscars hold any merit to you?

So the Oscar nominations came out today, most of them predictable but good movies, no films were snubbed like "The Dark Knight" or "The Wrestler" were in 2008. (Personally I want Toy Story 3 to win this year, but fat chance)

I just wonder does academic appraisal really have any merit on how you may enjoy a film. Sure they are there for advertisements sake, all awards are, but do they mean anything to you? Personally, I don't really care for an Oscar nominations in regards to quality, considering 3 of my favorite films weren't ever nominated (The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, Blade Runner, and Alien).

On the other hand, I do have to respect them for bringing lesser known films into the public's eye. Otherwise I would have never seen such great movies like Shawshank Redemption, There will Be Blood, or other lesser known movies.

If I enjoy the film, no.

I still watch though, because I am curious. The people doing the Oscars typically make good choices anyway.

I find the Oscars meaningless because the kinds of movies I like don't win Oscars. If I'm watching a movie, it's probably because I want to laugh at something lowbrow for 90 minutes (Spaceballs, Bill&Ted's Excellent Adventure, Marx Brothers movies...)

For me, I have never payed attention to the oscars. I don't see the point in caring what a certain group perceive to be the "best" movie of the year.

I give more of a shit about how many Red gummy bears are in this bag I just bought than I do about the Oscars.

I make it a point to see all of the films that get nominated for Best Picture.

Many of them are overrated (Hurt Locker, King's Speech).

Not really, I was pleased last year when Jeff Bridges finally won best actor, but looking at this year's list just makes me remeber what a load of old sheep the academy are.

Not at all. It's mostly a "who can kiss the Academy's ass the most without being too obvious about it" contest. All those parties and such leading up to the big day? Expressly for the purpose of ass-kissing.

The Oscars hold as much merit to me as do the Grammies: absolutely none. It's just a bunch of rich people deciding who they can uplift for some arbitrary reason that changes every year with the norms of society. It's like if the popular kids at a school lunch table suddenly bring some random kid from another table and say "This guy is awesome, and you can quote us on it!", and then they ignore him for the rest of the year. And then they do the cycle again a week later. It means little since the films that I like have never been praised by the Oscars.

However, I'm always curious to see who gets Best Actor. I've seen some great films as a result of that, like Crazy Heart and Capote. So I guess it's slightly better than the Grammies in that regard.

Not at all. I don't really watch any awards show. I don't need someone telling me what's a good movie or not to know what I enjoy.

Yes, I do care, or else I would not root for my favorite indie film or big budget picture to win an award. Sometimes, the Oscars bring to my attention small films that where swept under the carpet by mainstreams releases. It certainly gave a boost to the likes of the Tarantino and the Cohens, so I give kudos for that.

Also the Oscar do bring attention to the smaller and less well know parts of production such as sound, editing, and cinematography. These are cornerstones of great film making but they are often overlooked in light of actors, directors, and film. The Academy Awards is one time of year bring that recognition to these fields.

The Oscars are certainly flawed though. The Academy has always been in need of fresh blood as genre films do get panned often and the Academy's selection can be predictable and or trite. There is also the issue of Oscar bait and pity awards, which is unfortunate because it taints the Heath Ledger win for The Dark Knight.

Flawed as they are, they are the most prestigious award that be bestowed on a film. They bring attention to the quality of films both mainstream and independent while recognizing the smaller pieces of them.

And hey, at least it isn't the People's Choice Awards.

I never put too much stock in to the Oscars. My dislike for them was proven once again when Tron Legacy only got ONE fucking nomination. It wasn't for Special Effects, and it wasn't for it's fantastic soundtrack by Daft Punk. No, it got a nod for sound editing. It was like a pity nomination.

Stupid Oscars.

Sure, kind of.

But the Grammy's. AAAAHHHHHHHH I can't stand watching them. There have been bands and people infinitely more talented than... Say... Kanye West, but it takes them 20+ years to get a Grammy. People like... Say... Kanye West got their multiple Grammy's in just a handful of years.

I have to really agree with this, the Grammy's really have nothing to do with subjective quality but rather how much advertisement and revenue they can bring up by getting "celebrities together.

None of these things really tickle my fancy so I don't watch them alot. Sometimes I'll tune in so I can see "Best Film" and all that kind of stuff (the really important ones).
