the academy gave hanks his first oscar for playing aids guy. and you do know cage already has an oscar, right?
Oh yeah, Philadelphia, I really don't know Hanks much... but I have seen that film, that performance IS worthy of recognition. Forrest Gump, less so, to spite how much I enjoyed it.

Frankly I think he earned his oscar for his first performance in Mazes and Monsters:

That's some hardcore LARPing.

And I remember now, Nic Cage got his oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. But people seem to act like he doesn't deserve it after staring in films like The Rock and The Wicker Man remake, but really those films would have been UTTERLY WORTHLESS if it wasn't for his performance (plus Connery in The Rock). He deserves recognition for that part of his career.

I like to see what´s nominated for best "foreign" film...usually there´s some good under-the-radar movies there that deserve attention.
But i dont think that they actually reflect what are the best movies of that year. It´s so subjective.

I don't understand how the opinions of a group of people have become worldwide symbols of brilliance. So, a few people like it, why does it matter who they are?

No films snubbed? I beg to fucking differ!
Where the hell is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World?

Hell no! I feel like they don't have any connection with the general populous. And while I do agree that the general populous are morons, some truly great, but unpopular movies have been snubbed as well. So yeah, it's all a bunch of baloney.

nope, it's just a bunch of people saying "this is my fav film" and I am not bothered what film that is. It's like MM on this site, does it matter if bioware or Zynga win? Not to me it doesn't.

Anyway, from what I have seen it's usually crap artsy films win, what was that film about queen Elizibeth? If I want to watch a drama or biography I will stay at home and watch the history channel (even though I don't have it). I want to see people getting killed and violence at the talkies, not pretentious crap.

no

I don't watch them. I don't look it up. It doesn't matter. So what some suit like that movie. Doesn't mean I will.

Where it belongs - in the rubbish pile. The film was distinctly sub-par, from its premise to its execution.
I don't agree, but there you have it, my point.
I very much enjoyed it, and I think it's eligible for at the very least a special effects or original soundtrack award.
I think the film was certainly scores better than that seething pile of dung that called itself 'Inception'.

Meh, I mostly just kind of take a quick look at the nominations before going to do something better with my time.

I don't really care about the oscars as much as I care about the nominations.

Most nominated movies are good in their own account, and at least the oscars gives them enough publicity to make some of them available in the movie theaters where I live, since they are usually too busy with Yogi the Bear.

As soon as George Romero, John Carpenter, or Alexander Aja wins an Oscar, maybe I'll start caring. Until then, why waste my time with a bunch of movies I don't give a shit about anyways?

As of this year, all Film and Television awards mean nothing to me. Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" is nominated for 3 Oscars: Art Direction (despite the fact that it looks like every other movie Tim Burton has made), Visual Effects (why wasn't "Tron: Legacy" nominated?) and Costume Design (...meh, they looked okay). "Tron: Legacy", personally, was robbed of a nomination for Best Original Score.

The Golden Globes were worse: "Alice..." was nominated for Best Feature: Musical or Comedy. I know it's not a musical, but can someone tell me how that film was a comedy? And how was it picked for nomination over both "Kick Ass" and "Scott Pilgrim"?

But my favourite nomination this year is in the BAFTAs: "Toy Story 3" is nominated for Best Visual Effects!!!!!

Well they gave Slumdog Millionaire and The Hurt Locker Oscars. So no they do not hold any merit. I think the best movie should always be the one that was the most entertaining, and not some shitty indie film noone has heard of until they release Oscar noms.
Slumdog was a really good movie. Overrated, perhaps, but great nonetheless. Indie films are being supported, not because they are indie films but because they are generally better than the brain-dead blockbusters.

Mostly, I don't care, the movies I like, I will still appreciate at the the end of the day. me and my friends usually make a game out of who can guess who wins. And who else thinks the commercial breaks are unnecessary? 4 hour long show and 5 minute awards. jeesh

Eh, I don't see much of a point in the Oscars. I don't need a movie I like to win several awards for me to keep liking it, nor will my opinion change for a movie that I didn't care for winning dozens.

Not really, no. I suppose the picture, director, and actor categories have some weight behind them but most of the rest is rubbish as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure "Best Cinematography" is a fine reward when one works in the industry but I can't really tell the difference between "good" and "great" in this regard myself.

Nope. I don't even know when they are or who are the nominees. I watch a lot of movies a year, some B rated (since I'm a sucker for bad yet amusing movies) and some that are worthy of an Oscar. However I don't much care either way.

Not to mention that they lost credibility in some years. Sometimes bad movies or actors won, sometimes great ones did (Who would give Cage an Oscar? Really? Maybe he was good in that movie but generally ..urgh)
Nic Cage is an amazing actor. It is when someone tells him to tone it down (National Treasure, Sorcerer's Apprentice) that he becomes bland and one-tone. When you let him loose, you get some Oscar Worthy performances (Leaving Las Vegas, Bad Lieutenant).

nope. the hurt locker is the best example. that movie sucked.

OT: No not at all. A lot of good movies are not nominated for Oscars because they are either released in the wrong seas or not the "Oscar type" movie.

Also a lot of good films get nominated and don't win because it just isn't their year. I would be missing out if I only stuck to the winners or nominees.

But the Oscars themselves are usually a good representation of quality in a film. I have yet to see a bad Best Picture movie. I love watching the Oscars, because I am a huge film nerd.
