Hm well mabey young children would hit people or run around like a twat (a certain biy I baby sit thinks he is sonic and will even paint himself blue, but thats more "Window licking ratarded" than violent) but a normal sane person is very unlikly to murder his family with a pimp slap like I did in Saints Row.

If this has been said already, and I'd be surprised if it hadn't, forgive me:

No, because "children" shouldn't be playing these types of games anyways.

No but since children should not be playing manhunt and I doubt many have its a worthless question
Gears of war contains violence yes but look at the context soldiers protecting the earth from invading aliens why should that cause concern if a child expresses the wish of wanting to be a soldier when they grow up no one makes a big deal out of it or send them to get psychiatric help.

The problem with this argument I believe is that people who believe video games enforce negative stereotypes also believe that people are born good, which in many cases just isn't true.

Generally people who are influenced by games are stupid and have no real morals. They see it in a game and find "fun" in it. So their logic tells them that if it's fun in a game it's fun in reality. And since my character doesn't feel remorse for these innocents I've slaughtered, why should I?

Which is a very good example of a a Psyhopath

Wikipedia said:
Lack of a conscience in conjunction with a weak ability to defer gratification and/or control aggressive desires, often leads to antisocial behaviors. Psychopathy does not necessarily lead itself to criminal and violent behavior. Instead, psychopaths high in social cognition may be able to redirect their antisocial desires in a different, non-criminal manner.
In games I often go on hour long killing sprees while laughing evilly the entire time. In GTA Vice City I spent 3 hours in a tank going around the place killing people at random.
In Fable 2 I slaughtered Bowerstone for some 2 hours to farm gold since I got the Augment that gives me gold/kill and one shotting Villagers for 11 gold was sexy.

Does this mean that I'll go hijack a tank and terrorize Miami, Or Kill an entire town for money? No, because unlike these kids who play GTA and decide to steal a car or shot someone I have two thing they don't, A conscience and a hefty amount of intelligence.

Well, I think we'd be remiss to say that violent gaming can't affect anyone, but if it affects you enough that you go on a killing spree, chances are that not letting you play video games would be a stalling measure at best. After all, if violent games have such an effect, other violent media must as well, right? And I think it would be rather difficult to go through life without any exposure to violent media of any sort.

The Son of Sam thought a Dog was telling him how to kill young women.
Maybe we should restrict sales of dogs to young people.

Psychological studies support that 'aggressiveness' increases (no -really-?!)

but aggressiveness =/= violence/criminal activity

Yes, but if someone is effected to the extent that they actually mimic such behavior, they're a ticking time bomb, no matter the stimulus. Video games don't effect most people beyond a desensitization to lesser levels of gore.
Anyway, why is a child playing Manhunt in the first place?

I say No... from my own experiences i know that brutal games don't make adults/kids hostile...
How can i tell? Well i played games like SplatterHouse, Mortal Kombat, Battle Toads etc in the arcade when i was 6 years old (sceary huh? xD) and after i got my own gaming system i still played brutal games... and now look at me... im a realy calm 18 year old guy who dosn't snaps every 5 mins...
Brutal games are a way to get rid of frustration or anger :] For instance... When im realy angry bout my boss bitching like hell in work i just hook up Postal 2 when i come back to home play the game for a hour or two and im relaxed ;]

Violent and criminal behavior existed before video games did, so that answers that question. People always need a scapegoat to take the blame off themselves. Hitler blamed the Jews, 20 years ago they blamed television and now they are blaming video games. The fault lies in the hypocrisy of the parents.

Violent games have more of an effect on children than sex scenes and skimpy clothes or nudity has upon them, especially nudity with no sexual context.
Even then, only the ones looking to gain acceptance through emulating behavior from popular media because they can't think of any better way to prove themselves to their peers are prone to that. There aren't too many kids out there like that, right?
Well, at least the geek/nerd kids should be immune to the effects of violent games, then.

Before anyone asks what Hitler's favorite game was again, I'll go out on a limb and say Wolfenstein 3-D. Sure, he's the bad guy in it like in any World War 2 shooter, but he gets to be a cyborg in it! It's sort of how Japanese gamers can't get enough of killing their own recent ancestors in WW2 shooters taking place in Japan.

There is always going to be a small amount of people that can't handle the experience from violent games. See Columbine High.

However, this does not justify banning certian games and punishing the public becouse the goverment can not handle this group of people.

So I say NO, violent behavoir have, and will always exist.

I think it really depends on the type of person. I think there is a slight degree to which it may affect the very young, but honestly children that young shouldn't be playing games like Manhunt anyways. I see far too much media impression on people where I'm from, it's almost an epidemic here, but I have yet to see a game violently influence anyone.

Because his parents are daft

No.

Poor parenting coupled with chemical imbalances in the brain maybe. Childhood trauma too. Psychotic violence is more easily attributable to being abused than to playing games. Also, I live in Korea where everybody games, at every hour of the day or night. Shouldn't we then have noticeably higher rates of violent crime? And yet, the facts say no.
