Not seen the movie, nor do I intend to, but you know darn well there WILL be a sequel. There 1.8 billion reasons to--and this time there's no sinking ship to eff up the possibility!

You know, I was really disappointed with Avatar as a sci-fi work. Woulda probably been a lot more interesting (and realistic) if the Nav'ai weren't already pretty much human to begin with. I mean, I get how it's hard to relate to characters that you don't think you could have a go at in the sack, but come ON. Sci-fi isn't just social commentary, it's "what if" scenarios that make us question. Would everyone have been so "it's wrong to kill all the blue people" if they had been hideous freaks with translucent carapaces and like, I dunno, more legs in all the wrong places? It's not hard to identify with blue tiger-people. I mean, you kinda HAVE to cause they're so obviously people. I mean, make it hard to accept! Make them scary as hell so when the protagonist finally joins them it means something! (hey, I just realized, sorta like District 9, eh?)

Also think they coulda done a lot more with the avatar concept (like having him disconnect from the machine but still have the Nav'ai version of him active and they end up fighting on opposite sides or something weird like that) but whatever.

Aaaanyway, for the next one I suggest Alien vs Predator vs Avatar vs Prawn: Bipedal Deathmatch!
This is why District 9 is a better movie. I actually care about the loose ends, unlike in Avatar. The thing that really irks me about both is how easily the language barrier is bridged. At least in District 9 they have 20 years, but Jake picks up Nav'i easier than most people pick up Spanish. Who's to say aliens would even communicate verbally? They could use EM waves we can't organically detect. What if they used radiation, and every time they talked to a human, we got cancer?

OT: The sequel would be two hours of slow, methodical, orbital carpet bombing, followed by an infomercial about why YOU should become an unobtainium miner.

Lols, lots of funny reactions here, but at least Silverwebsurfer is making some sense, it could very well be a prequel in which Cameron explores the past of the Na'vi and how they were united (it was already mentioned in the first movie as being a very important event in their history).

The only problem i see here is that there won't be any human characters to relate to directly ... but since many people are already big fans of Netiry and the Na'vi in general i don't think they will mind if the entire movie was about them with no humans involved.

Other than that i do think Cameron is right about making a sequel (or prequel .. whatever it might be) cause he spent a very long time creating a world, a language, a culture and an entire planet-system ... those who want to appreciate the scope of his work should probably get a look at his Pandorapedia that encompasses all his work ... which Avatar the movie is a by-product of.

Also .. don't expect this sequel any time soon .. he will probably be working on (Battle Angle Alita) movie next .. again creating new technology solely for it ... just hope he doesn't screw up this one XD

This can only go downhill, imo. Sequels rarely have better animation than their originals, and even more rarely have better stories.

Call it as you want, escapists, but while the visuals were stunning, the story was lacking, and the next "installment" is most likely going to be of substantially lower quality than the original.

No. Never, and anyone who disagrees with that can go fap to Netiri, because I am right.
Its "Neytiri."

OT: I loved the first one, but I really don't think we need a sequel. It was a great movie on its own.

A sequel will have the expectations as the first one, only more so.

I vote no.

I don't really care all that much. I'll watch it, the first one was decent blockbuster movie fare. At least it wasn't gutwrenchingly stupid.

In long, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

That said, if one had to do a sequel to Avatar- and in the off chance a studio exec actually trolls the Escapist forums, I offer this idea freely and without expectation of compensation for use by anyone who can- I'd suggest you keep the humans out of the picture entirely. Or at least, the humans still tied to Earth, as opposed to the ones who've "gone native." Any sort of "We need to band together again to keep the greedy humans from butchering our sacred planet" is going to be just that, an again. It will be a very pretty "again", no doubt, but Avatar itself is pretty much a retreading of old ground, and there's no question about it. Go the same route again, and you're asking for an apathetic response.

It would be much better, to my mind, and much more interesting to deal with the implications of the human technology that remains on Pandora. If the Na'vi splintered on the basis of those who embraced the wonders of the humans' science versus the ones who cling to the old ways, you could create some very interesting conflicts- conflicts that offered a lot more shades of gray, at that.

Of course it can be continued, the humans were not killed but chased back to earth, the big pile of metal is still under the remains of the giant tree and mankind hasn't learned the "we need to take care of nature"-thing.

But do we need it? NO!!! The first one was a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE piece of cinema.

Personal aside, can people please stop with the Pocahontas references, one its been done to death, and second, you didnt kick up a fuss for Last Samurai or any other man goes native story lines. Why Avatar?. Just fucking let it be.

And yes, sequel is a good business strategy, but I'm not sure how much it will add to the overall franchise. Aliens 2 was good, because it expanded on the original, answered some questions posed some new ones. Avatar would have to do the opposite, in theory, shrink to a more personal and introverted level, but I'm not sure something with this much scope has the capacity for such things.

Why do we always have to have a sequel? If something is great, then let it stand. Next he'll be wanting to make a sequel to Titanic where Jack comes back.

Yeah, there'll probably be a sequel. It's hard to imagine where they can go from here, though, without simply rehashing the same plot of Evil Military/Corporation vs Good Nature. Any other plot would simply be banal (Pandora wildlife is wonderful!) or undercut the theme of the first movie (Na'vi need technology! Elwe has a dark secret!). Hmm.... I look forward to seeing what Mr. Cameron has in mind.

Hell yes! And with a decent story this time! It would be a waste not to, just like district 9

Hell Yes

As long as James Cameron attends the "Dark Knight" school of sequels, then Avatar deserves another step up to the plate. To clarify, the movie doesn't NEED a sequel, but as long as Cameron can make it fresh and beautiful, then i say all power to engines and full speed ahead.

Avatar has the potential to be the Star Wars of our generation.

I'm hoping it will be a Matrix in reverse sequel, where they have a self-contained story which ends up getting two brilliant sequels as opposed to the Matrix having a really open ended story with loads of room to make a great story followed by two horrible sequels.

What I'd really like to see in the sequel is a focus on the Earth that puts the humans actions into context. Maybe by this point the Earth is completely messed up and they need the unobtanium to clean up the nuclear wasteland that the Earth has become. If they could retroactively make the humans in Avatar 1 into credible and sympathetic antagonists that would not only be a great story but it would actually make Avatar 1 a better film.

Do we really need internet people speculating on things that are not even anywhere near production?. What is wrong with you people?.

Give Avatar a rest.

Let the director do what he wants and if you like the trailers pay good money and see it. Until then stop asking "if X is a good idea?" How are we supposed to know?
