there will be another movie (not necessarily a sequel), all we can hope is that it was as good as the first one.

Did we even need the first one?

EDIT: well, I got a forum warning for this, so I'll think I'll expand my post.

While Avatar looked great, and the action-y bits were fun, overall, it did nothing much for the world of cinema entertainment. A pretty bad story that can't go anyway now that the first movie is over, and having anything like a prequel wouldn't be great seeing as the humans hadn't made a major offensive, and the Na'vi hadn't entrusted anyone from the humans into their ranks.
Obviously you havnt watched it. The main Characters get alowed into the Na'vi Ranks. Jake Sulley, he goes through the Na'vi manhood training and then becomes one of the people and the others are all alowed in. The trusted stay on pandora and the other humans got sent back.

OT: A sequel in my opinion wont work, i cant see any further plot development from here. a Prequel would work though... Either way, im going to go and see it
Notice that I said prequel. That means before the events of the movie. This wouldn't work because of the reasons above.
Ah, you did too. Well then, I apologise then.
Not a problem.

Although, I suppose a prequel could work, if it takes place when the humans a=first arrive, and end up fighting for their lives, or something.
[small]Then we'll show those goddam smurfs what we're made of![/small]
Lol, yeah. Would put a couple of things straight that werent right in the first one

Meh. I would not mind a second dose of Navi and Shadow Riders. Still, the movie is like Terminator. It doesn't need a sequel to make sense.

Why would that be?

Since Jake became a Nav'i at the end of the movie, it obviusly means it will take place on Pandora. The only reason that Pochahontas took place with the brittish, is because in the first movie, the blond dude that she loves (Forgot his name) got shot, and had to go back, and Disney doesn't want to have to create a new Love interest, so they choose for Pochahontas to follow him in the sequel.

Why do we always have to have a sequel? If something is great, then let it stand. Next he'll be wanting to make a sequel to Titanic where Jack comes back.

Avatar 2? Inevitable. I smell at least a trilogy. How about this:

Few years later, another human ship is coming to Pandora. The governments and corporations obviously want to do more with that planet (moon). They pick a better place to do their corporate mining operations, one that isn't laying under a f*cking civilisation. They sign some kind of an agreement with the Na'vi (and Jake), so it all seems well. What could go wrong? Many things. Possible wrong-goings: a) They dig out something big, ancient and angry. b) Humans aren't the only aliens who want the unobtanium. Other invaders come. Either way, conflict arises. And with conflict, there is a movie. And CGI explosions.

But it will probably be a disappointment anyway. Like the first film.

sadly you are wrong a bit there. disney did make a new love interest. his name was john locke i believe and although Pocahontas movies wern't what you would call "historically accurate", they did follow the history of Pocahontas well enough because they did not make a third movie because in history Pocahontas died on the way back to from Britain to her home of smallpox or measles. She died on the boat anyway on the way home.... I read alot and i paid attention in american history class....and my sister rented the 2nd movie when we were kids, Sue me!

No need for an Avatar sequel. Though it did make bazillions, so Cameron's gonna continue. Just make two sequels and end it there. Max out the tech, make the story less Ferngully/Pocahontas/Dances with Wolves, and end it on some form of high note, like Jake sacrificing himself to become the new god of the Na'vi or something.

The only sequel I can think of for that story would be them finding a new home...somewhere...

Otherwise...no, leave it as is.

If it's like the first one then why not. If it fails then I won't watch it, if it's good then why not? I think I already thought of where they could go with the story...
The company goes back to earth and tells them what happend. The entire earth military then gets sent to take out the na'vi and get the unobtanium.
So it really isn't hard to think of where it could go next. I just hope it's a good movie...

From what i heard, when James Cameron originally wrote Avatar 14 years ago, he wrote it as a trilogy. SO, with any luck, he already has teh sequels planned.

Either way though, there is nothing we can do. All we can do is hope that the sequel will be just as good, or better, than the First one.

I have said it before, Avatar may just be the Star Wars of our Generation

Oh, well you got me there then. In my defense though, I'm swedish and haven't had alot of classes about the american history.

james cameron does good sequels, just look at aliens and terminator 2. We don't need it, but it'll probably be good.
but both alien and terminator set themselfs up for a sequel

Avatar ended with a the Na'vi lived happily after ever caring after each other and their planet

they sent the humans home and set the big bird thing free.....the only thing i could think could happen is the humans come back for the unobtainium

Smurfs and Pocahontas don't have decent sequels therefore, neither should Avatar!
Agreed. The Pocahontas sequel was completely lame.

OT: I haven't seen the movie yet, but most movies sequels are either a) better than the original or b) incredibly worse. It's a fifty fifty gamble, and honestly I hate sequels. They usually lead to another installment and milking of a franchise that needs to just fade away gracefully instead of beat for every dime that can be milked out of it.
