Interesting point, I never thought about it that way. Still, if it weren't for Luke, there's no way Vader could fulfill his role.

The annoying thing with this is that it totally screws with Lucas's "love clouds your mind and turns you to the dark side" thing, since, though falling in love made Vader fall to the Dark, he got brought back again by the kid who was the result of that love. That's completely screwed.

I love Star Wars. I even liked the prequels(There's no love there, except for Greivous *sigh* what a waste). But of all the things I liked about Star Wars, R2, Lightsabers, Super Sith Shocky Hands, Luke is pretty well the most forgettable to me. He was the main character, he saved the galaxy, he whooped on Vader and the Emperor. Now children, we move along to the Death Star exhibit....

He was more interesting in the Expanded Universe.

Since, you know, he had a personality beyond "Do the right thing".
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

But all around I don't hate him I mean I love Star Wars.
I'm putting stars and numbers next to the ones I can address.

1. Wouldn't be much of a story if he didn't
2. I think he looked pretty smug when Leia kissed him
3. No, he wasn't. Vader actually was the chosen one all along. He did end up killing Palpatine, after all
4. That's just a necessary part of the Hero's journey
5. Nope, got the crap kicked out of him and nearly died at the end of V
haha this is funny :) also "2. I think he looked pretty smug when Leia kissed him" this always bugged me about star wars :S an insest kiss in it, i mean the films could hav made it without this minute or so lol

I assume you're taking the "love=bad" thing from KotOR, right? The message I got wasn't that love is bad, but rather that the old Order was really stubborn and set in it's ways, which is why you have Jolee and Kreia, who both tell you as much. Later in the universe, you also have Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors, and Luke and Mara Jade, who are in love even as they form the new, more open Jedi Order.

Really? My impression was that it was set from the first, with that kiss clearly just being there to spite Han.

Theres really no indication about it in any of the other movies(NO PREQUEL NO PREQUEL).

Even Yoda's line could be refering to Vader as he could come out of the dark side and thus linking Yoda's "No, theres still another one." line to Vader being the father of Luke.

ESB, Leia spends time with Han developing a relation, but what of Luke? Shouldn't the good guy get the girl? Yeah Sister.

As far as the movies go, I'm not much of a fan, though I respect his function in the story. However, judging by some of my friend's descriptions from books taking place right after Return of the Jedi, Luke became quite the badass, which I think is awesome.

Also, Mark Hamill is one cool bastard.

Not really, he was kinda bland and without much personality. Wait, George Lucas wrote this, no wonder...
The only characters I liked in all of Star Wars was Darth Vader and Han Solo, at least he had some personality and was likable. I'm still waiting for those prequels to be made, and I hope they don't show Anakin as some snot nosed brat that had such a big head that it was a wonder that it would fit in the docking back of the Death Star, much less the cockpit of a fighter.

Luke = NO WAY. He's square, whiney, tried to do his sister, needy, has a retard hair cut, tried to do his sister, crys too much, TRIED TO DO HIS SISTER, and even when they try to make him grow out of that whole 'awkward moron' phase the last movie, he just came off as pretentious and flat as cardboard. Wet cardboard.

Frodo = I am all over that like a monkey on bananas. Sure, near the end he was in (DESPERATE) need of some prozac, but come ooon, those eyes? The shirtless scene? He was cute and funny, yet at the end you somehow realize the innocence and naiveity has dissappeared and been replace with the sexy, deep, introspective Frodo, and NOT in a whiney, wet cardboard way.

Also, is it just me or does he talk a lot less as the movies go on:
FELLOWSHIP: "Hey Gandalf so Bilbo was talking to me and I hope you're coming to his party blah blah blah..."
TOWERS: "....we can't do it....I feel alone..."
RETURN: "*bigs sad blue eyes.* ...........Sam........................"

I don't like him. He seemed like a douche in all the Star Wars movies, and he's even a douche in the animated series.

Luke was well-acted. The writing for the films was clearly poor, yet he did make us believe it. Calling him cliché on the other hand is a bit of an unfair criticism; we are talking about Hollywood movies here, and of course they're going to go for the farmboy/carpenter hero, after all it's an American film, and religious appeal is a big boost to their potential success. Why, one could even say America wants Jesus to be an American so badly that they go out of their way to make their heroes like him.

Cliché is something pretty much no one can avoid; just look at the TV Tropes website. There's a cliché in everything, so it's an unfair criticism.
Definitely. The reason Star Wars was such a huge success was because it built on the foundations of the very first stories of "good vs. evil" and the archetypal hero. Star Wars follows the typical "Hero's Journey" like Dorothy followed the yellow brick road.

I guess you could call that cliche.

I didn't like him nor did I hate him.

He was your typical wide-eyed idealist and I respect that. I preferred R2D2.
