I'm sure there has been a thread about this before, but I haven't seen it surface recently, and I'm curious:

When playing a game (or after the fact) do you ever associate a specific song with that game?

Below are a few games I have played and songs I associate with them:

Knights of the Old Republic - What I've Done - Linkin Park
For me, this 'relates' to the story of Revan and his/her attempt to
come to grips with the past.

Mass Effect - Fight the Good Fight - Triumph
Yeah. I played a paragon Shep. This seemed appropriate.

Mass Effect 2 - Indestructible - Disturbed
Shep died, only to come back stronger. Fitting, I think.

Mass Effect 3 - Iridescent - Linkin Park
Melancholy. Fits with the story of this chapter.
Also fits with my reaction to the ending.

Skyrim - Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
A rock song about vikings. Nice.

Starcraft - Ride of the Valkyries - Richard Wagner
What can I say. I like using aerial forces. This seemed appropriate.

Any Zombie Game - Let's Go (Insane) - Ministry
Suitably chaotic.

Any Other Zombie Game - The Trooper - Iron Maiden.
Thanks, Max Brooks, for pointing this one out.

So what about you?

Whenever I hear 'South Texas Deathride' by The Union Underground, I think of Left 4 Dead. :3

There are lots of songs I associate with MMOs.. can't really say the same for other 'normal' games, since I'm usually listening to the in-game soundtrack. c:

I think of Atreyu when playing motorstorm as it's the custom playlist I had for it for the longest time. Gotta love custom tracks.

Get to da Choppa! reminds me of L4D. For obvious reasons

And the Gurren Lagann soundtrack reminds me of League of Legends cuz it's always in my LoL playlist.

Sorairo Days playing during an big tower push is just epic. It also makes me want to shout "JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!" at my enemies whenever I get a particularly cool kill XD

Bitches ain't got nothin' on Morgana The Fallen Angel XD

In my experience, good games have good soundtracks. When I think of a game, I usually think of the music in it. Although I will agree, there often comes a moment where 'Ride of the Valkyries' is appropriate - usually when you're in a big, heavily armed vehicle.

Whenever Annah's theme from PS:T pops up, I get shivers down my spine. So beautifully haunting...

Nope. Only when the songs are about the games, or can be found in the games.

I got Skyrim and Mastodon's record 'The Hunter' at the same time and played them together for days so now I associate them with each other. One of my favourite games and one of my favourite records synced up forever. Awesome.

Same story for Red Dead Redemption and Comeback Kid's record 'Symptoms + Cures'. Again, awesome.

EDIT:

The GTA San Andreas radio stations obviously, I can hardly imagine what would happen in one of those songs should come up on the radio if I drive IRL. I also associate God Put A Smile On Your Face by Coldplay with a certain mission in Guild Wars. Furthermore there are some albums or music genres that I associate with games (e.g. Big Shiny Tunes with World of Warcraft and Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park with League of Legends).

Brutal Legend - Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah
This should not need explaining.

BloodRayne - Rammstein - Du riechst so gut
Most Rammstein songs actually work really well while playing Rammstein, and this one works the best IMO.

Saints Row 3 - Kayne West - Power / Subblime - What I Got
The former due to it being used for the trailer and the latter because of this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMqcWmlmXcE].

Half-Life 2 - Aphex Twin - Icct Hedral
I feel that the atmosphere created by the track really matches that of City 17.

I always referred songs I didn't know the name of by the game I heard them in.

Hence Geurilla Radio by Rage Agaisnt the Machine was know to me as "that song from Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2". So much so that whenever I hear that song I still picture skateboarding montages.

I always think of Homeworld whenever I hear Adagio for Strings. Anyone who has played past the second mission will know why.

On the subject of Half-Life 2, I associate Radiohead's entire album Hail to the Thief with that game. The two of them sound like what would happen if you tried to create the exact same mood and atmosphere in two incomparably different mediums.

Homeworld: The Ladder, by Yes.
Catherine: Tainted Love, by Soft Cell.

Mass Effect 3: Blow to Kingdom Come, by Running Wild.

All the ones that spring to mind immediately. There might be more, but I can't think of them right now.

EDIT: Oh hell, how could I forget? These songs are forever linked to my time with SR2:

Hell yeah, Booster Gold. Best superhero that no-one ever seems to know about.
