I personally don't.

Yeah.

Look at it this way, it is illegal to be a KKK member. It is illegal to be a Nazi sympathizer.

But it is legal to be an extremely sexist church member, preaching the ways of your Lord to disguise your phobia of homosexuals.

Your hate.

And with inequalities like this in the system...

Why should we have freedom of speech?

It is better this way.

It is good that there are no Nazi sympathizers, or KKKs.

It is better like this.

What do you think?
To censor even the most bullshit neo-Nazi hate speech is to promote censorship of any sort, and if anything can be censored the truth can also.
People that really piss me off are those who coincide with the bullshit double standard ?I believe in frees peach for everything except what I don?t agree with?. But again with the offence part there is a little magical thing located on all components of the media it?s called the off button.

QFT, I feel the same way. Only regarding me, not anyone else

The problem with removing freedom of speech is while it starts small, it explodes.

You say Nazis and homophobes lose their right? That's well and good, but eventually more and more is classed as hate speech, and eventually shit gets 'V for Vendetta' on our asses.

Leave it be. The system isn't perfect, but it works.

An American once told me to shut up, so I told him it was in my rights to free speech.

He told me, "Only Americans have that."

Christ, I wanted to gut him on the spot.
Mm, he would've deserved it. And I'm an American.

Now, two people have already said it, but I haven't seen anyone respond to it, and certainly not the OP, so I'm going to say it a bit louder.

<font color=red>It is not illegal to be a KKK member or a Nazi.

Hell, there's even a Neo Nazi Party. These groups are fairly small, with low membership counts, and are generally looked down upon, but they do exist. Why do they exist? Because we have freedom of speech.

The only time freedom of speech is restricted is when it is harmful to other people. For example, you can't yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater when there's no fire because it's not only possible, but extremely probable that someone will get hurt. People have gotten trampled to death in panics in enclosed spaces like that. Ergo, it is illegal to to yell fire when there isn't one because you endanger others.

However, the KKK and Nazi's don't directly endanger other people, they just have incredibly intolerant opinions. No, they're not allowed to carry out hate crimes obviously, but they are allowed to have and voice their opinions.
OK, fine, you can use colours.

But, I was told by a trusted source that it is illegal.

Can you give me a source?
It's not illegal persay but you do get put on a fun little list of gang affiliation, which means you do a crime, you do double because it was "gang affiliated."

Interestingly, think of what you are doing if you say "no" to freedom of speech on an internet forum....

Anyway, Johnny Locke was right, Freedom ftw. Just man up and learn to ignore hurtful words.

Seriously, this thread should simply end with realizing that one's freedom of speech, and indeed, freedom of opinion and choice is immediately limited by that of others and by their degree of morality, which directly influences one's thoughts

So you're saying that because if a tiny minority of ne'erdowells that the only course of action is to remove something as sacred as freedom of speech? Complete and utter drivel.

Sure, you can say whatever you want as long as you talk to yourself and don't bother other people with it. They're far too busy doing the same.

Everyone has the right to make themselves look like an idiot. This is how we find out who to stay away from and will make for good jokes and stories at the persons expense later.

The biggest problem with limiting freedom of speech is that it gives groups like the KKK a legitimate reason to exist. All of a sudden they become an oppressed minority (in their eyes) and they can use that as a platform to garner more support in an underground movement. They have been saying for years that the government is going to take away all their rights and if it happened then the KKK would be proven right.

I don't know about you, but I don't ever want the KKK to be proven right. Ever. They have the right to spew their hate, and I have the right to call them assholes.

It is always better to let people speak than shut them up- when mouths are silenced, the fists start to talk. If there is pressure, it has to come out somehow. Speech is a relatively safe emergency valve.

Of course, "freedom of speech" doesn't mean you can say anything. Mocking someone's characteristis they were born with, skin colour, for example, is not justified under any laws. Personal insults are not good either, it's just immature and rubbish.

Cultural things, things that are learnt and adapted are something one can affect and change, critisizing them is not racist and allowed. We have the right to be offended, but too bad most people don't remember a very important rule in debating: Don't get angry, strike back!(with a legitimate argument, not shouting)
Racism has to do with biology, dot anthropology. Also encouraging to illegal acts is not included in the freedom of speech, as is stated, telling someone to commit a murder is punishable by law, for example. Freedom of speech means you can say anyhting as long as it is within the laws currently applying. Freedom of speech is not separate from any other legal guideline.

Being a member of a group like the the KKK is not a matter of freedom of speech, it's about the citizen's rights to unite and gather. And in the case of this particular group, it has proven to be a group that drives its cause with violence, which is not acceptable, and it appears to be illegal. Also their racist ideas are not included within the freedom of speech. All this interperting the US bill of rights, not every single constitution in the world. Although the same principles apply in most of Europe as well.

people often forget that "freedom" is not "do whatever you want"

"your freedom ends where my rights begin"- i read it somewhere, i think a Mexican writer.

I think you should be able to lose the right if you abuse it, though only for the most extreme of cases. Everyone else should get a cyborg leg lick to the face.
