Do you care about game age?

Personally I don't think it matters, but it might be the fact that (for games at least) designs might have improved over the course of a few years. I find it very hard to get sucked in by nostalgia (there are some exceptions - fond memories of Pokemon, for example), so I tend to see improvements or dips for what they are.

Another thing might be that people liked the stuff when they were younger and after growing up and their opinions change, they might realise this, that or the other wasn't as good as they thought it was back then. However, this isn't tied to the age of the thing in question.

That said, some things are just plain timeless and have an appeal no matter how old they might be.

Basically, the whole "It's too old, you wouldn't like it" argument is a very stupid one.

well, I'd say that its more stupid to dislike a 3 year old song than it is to dislike a 3 year old game.

Disliking old songs is stupid - its not like the quality becomes any worse is it? Jimi Hendrix songs are just as awesome today as they were in the 70's.

Games, on the other hand, can be understandable - maybe not from 3 years ago, but there certainly is a difference in quality between todays games, and, say, a game from an old Pong console or an Atari 2600.

That said, most of the differences are merely cosmetic - its still perfectly reasonable to enjoy an older game. I still love to play Timesplitters 2, or GTA IV or whatever, why should that change with time?

Age matters a bit, some games age well, others dont, and it works surprisingly similar to humans.

If a game has nothing to offer but amazing graphics it will not age well, it can be fun to play at release but when the graphics stop to impress the game doesnt have much going for it. (for example crysis)

If a game is built on gameplay or story instead, it will age well. Some games also manage to use a "timeless" graphic that simply look good over time even if it is not in any way revolutionary at any point (okami, warcraft 2 still look good imo)

Its the same with humans, those who dont age well are those who have nothing more to offer than a pretty face. They need facelifts and surgery all over the place to try to keep up, but nothing can hinder time to show the world how shallow and stupid they are.

Other people have a sense of humor, a kind heart or other qualities that do not diminish over time, and will thus age well.

Starcraft 1, Warcraft 3, CS 1.6'
People still play these a lot. They're old, but they are still great games. Old =/= bad.

I don't really care about game age, the fact that some game is old does not mean that its bad.
It is true that potential for games increases with technology but most of the new games lack the color and variety of some old titles... nowadays it's mostly space marines and gritty realism. A good example is the GTA franchise... I played the new title (4) and although it was fun and all it couldn't match the color of Vice City or arguably San Andreas... Ant the FPS-es have also fallen victim to that... where are the space pigs and super lazers and shit?

wow I'm really sorry for sounding like mr. Croshaw
It's just that I do agree with his opinion, gritty realism should fuck off

I've never cared much about graphics. I still play Halo 1 more than Halo 2 and 3 and when it comes to music, I listen to whatever I like, but after listening to it for too long, it gets boring.

FPS graphics may have gotten better, but no FPS is as complete as "Perfect Dark."

Last time I checked, CS 1.6 was the third most played game on Steam, after MW2 and CS:S. So, perhaps remove the bit in the brackets.

Hahaha. No.

I still play my dreamcast more than my damn Xbox 360.
Really, the older generations were far better.

I mean what's not to like about Powerstone?

I dont care about age, if a game is good then a game is good.

Your step-sisters who think 3-year-old music is "outdated" tends to be a common thing nowadays, people are so hung up over what's new

i mean, Ive seen games sell for £50 on the day of release but where you can get it for £45 if you trade in a game that came out 2 weeks ago... anyone who does that probably has no appreciation for actual games, only trends

It's more understandable with games because of the speed that software and hardware are improved. But it still doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm currently playing through all the console Zelda games with a friend just because all of them are amazing (possible excluding Zelda II).

I know for music, studio equipment in terms of hardware and software is also constantly being improved but it doesn't quite make as much difference.

nah, age doesnt mean anything to me. if a game is good.. its good..

for example perfect dark is still one of my favourite games of all time and i was rly happy when they made it for the 360... even if they did change some of the characters faces...

Old music is far superior to the shit that gets released these days. ME and a friend sat back and couldn't think of any bands for performers, that were not already established from the past decade that have had any lasting impact.

I don't really look at the age of music or games. I'll know it's new if it has just come out, but other than that I won't check. I don't really care about graphics.

Nope. I still own a SNES, NES, N64 and a PS1. The games that did NOT age well are mostly games that touted having the best graphics or the most realistic cinematics. For instance I hate FF8, but I still love FF6 and FF7. I also tend to find that most games on the PS2 fall flat for me, as that was an era where gaming focused mostly on technical advancements and polygon counts over gameplay. Some games are just plain timeless, though and will be fun no matter how old they are.
