I like eye candy as much as the next guy, but I still play lot of old games like Kotor or Bloodlines and I'm fine with the way they look, after cranking up the settings they're quite nice in fact, so I guess you could say I'm a graphics whore with very low standards.

I don't care one bit. Sure some good graphics are nice, but if they are good or not does not effect my opinion of the game.

For me, nice graphics are a perk. Being able to run Crysis on high is always nice, but the NES has most of my favorite games.

Agreed graphics are a great thing in games they add to the immersion and atmosphere but a truely great game is one that you can pop into an age old console or pc a year later and still have fun with it so yeah graphics are great but nothing really compares to a great story and exellent gameplay [for me one of those is the prince of persia trilogy]

I love going back and playing older games with graphics maxed out. There's something cool about playing Doom 3 or Half Life 2 at 1280 with everything turned on at 60fps.

As for consoles, yeah, I care about graphics. I have an 46" HD set and I like games to look good. Thats why I was disappointed the Wii has only 480p.

i refuse to read all of the posts so im going to assume this has already been said but oh well...

a game can look absolutely beautiful but still be crap, in my opinion as lost as the graphics enable you to get a vague idea of what is going on then i dont care, a couple of my top 5 favourite games were Perfect Dark and Goldeneye on the N64.. graphics werent terrible, but werent good.. and they are great games

Depends on the game.

To be more accurate, survival horor games are just not that scary when they have bad graphics.

Anyone who says no is lying. Graphics are important but they are not the MOST important thing. Solid gameplay is the key, and that can be built in any number of ways. If your gameplay is solid, you can present it with low quality graphics and still have a memorable game on your hands. If you slap in some incredibly fancy graphics, well it's like the cream cheese icing on the mayonayse cake.
And how do you explain the popularity or MUDs or games like Zork? Graphics free, man. Still popular. Also, Second Edition AD&D. We didn't have graphics or miniatures. Still loved the game. In fact, there's a couple of computer games on my desk right now, and I itch more to play AD&D than one I could throw in my disc tray right now.

So, not important. Nice, enjoyable, and a beautifully rendered game is most definitely something to behold, but not essential. Hell, look at Geometry Wars. Those are old school graphics with some color. No fancy rendering needed. Just a fun game.

I'll admit I appreciate graphics, but I've enjoyed a game on the Wii with its last gen graphics, and I've hated beautiful games on the 360 or the PS3. Hell, I just installed Dune 2000 on my computer. Thinking about picking up the Command & Conquer 12 pack. Do graphics on those games makes them enjoyable?

They can be fun, they can help, but they are not the end all be all of gaming, despite the bitching you hear out of reviewers.
You will note that I stated precisely what you said. Also, at the time Dune 2k (if it's the RTS game I think it is) actually looked quite good. To your point about MUDs, I would give the counter point of any of the MMO's currently on the market. The gameplay is essentially the same in that you do a lot of grinding/exploring and whatnot, but the presentation of the package means that while MUDs might have been incredibly fun, they also attracted a relatively small audience. Since it's impossible to guess just how many people at any given time played all the muds available it's difficult to say if muds were more popular than games like WOW, but i'd be willing to wager that MMO's of today probably draw a greater percentage of the online game playing population.

For me, graphics only creates the enitial reaction to a game. You may look at a game and say "Wow it's beautiful" or "Wow it looks like shit" but that only lasts for 10 minites at the most. After that, I simply don't notice the graphics.

Take a game like Mass Effect. Beautiful game. I was playing it at Christmas in the living room when I got it and my dad leaned over my shoulder and said "Wow, it's incredible, it looks like a movie!" and I just shrugged at him. I'd lost interest in the graphics pretty quickly. I was too caught up in the game to care.

Graphics are not the most important thing ever - Gameplay and story are much more important to me, however I still prefer good graphics than bad graphics.

graphics are really important, but at the same time, they are by far not the most important element in a game.

I just spent the last hour playing Capitalism II. Those graphics are so primitive they're barely a step up from SimCity 3000 (another great game), yet it doesn't matter because the gameplay is so solid.

Fair to say I don't give a rat's ass about graphics as long as the gameplay's good enough.

graphics are a nice thing to have, and people are more interested in a game with good graphics, but you can't just have a game thats boring but has awesome graphics.

I enjoy good graphics, but then again I play retro games all of the time, I guess it depends on the mood.

I guess the real answer would be, graphics are great but not if it takes away from the rest of the games production. I'd say Gears, RE4 and 5, MGS4, Crysis, Dead Spaceand a few others managed to keep all of it pretty well while having great visuals.

I do care about the graphics to an extent but fun first and foremost is the most important element in a videogame.

Graphics are important, without graphics how the hell are you going to see what's being shown? people need to see what their playing, even text based games use graphics.
But if you mean 'High quality graphics' then no. It's a nice addition and can look cool, but they don't make the game.

Do you mean graphical power, physics, and resolution, etc? Because I put design, style, and atmosphere under story rather then graphical.

My order goes gameplay, story, audio, and visuals last. I would be lying if I said graphics don't matter. They do, but I think too much attention is put into them, both by developers and consumers. Big companies with large budgets have no excuse to release a game that looks fuzzy. Smaller companies I can understand. I am perfectly fine with last generatio graphics. We should have stopped there. I don't think adding mroe detailed graphics makes a game even better. I never found myself choicing Pokémon Colosseum over Pokemon Red, or Super Mario Sunshine over Super Mario Bros(I don't like the 3D Mario's).

i believe its charactor design thats the important not graphics e.g red alert 2 has crappy graphics but u can tell what EVERYTHING is , red alert 3 has good(ish)but i cant play 4 longer than an hour cause i dont kno what is what
How were Red Alert 2 graphics crappy? Those building and unit animations are amazing.
