Hello my fellow escapists.

This thread is all about the acknowledgement of lore!

Which lore do you follow? If you follow any at all. Does lore even matter? Is lore a game changer? Tell me about your experiences, and favorite lore, and preferably worst lore.

My favorite lore is the World of Warcraft lore. No, don't worry, i'm not a WoWfag. But I think the lore is extremely well thought up, and a lot of it doesn't sound like it's lore for a game, it sounds like it could all make sense in a real world situation. That's what I love about it, everything fits together, and there's a lot to fit together.

Warhammer.

And to a lesser extent Warhammer 40k

Been a warhammer fan for 20 years now even though it takes them years to move the timeline on a bit.

And when they do the kill off my favourite Necromancer.

Oh Nagash, how I miss thee.

I dont get obsessed with it but I like it- its there to make whatver its attached to more enjoyable, if altering it makes that thing more enjoyable then so be it.

Criminal lore was my favourite area.
Contract lore is better, though.

OT: Yeah, I love lore. World building is a huge part of what makes games interesting to me. I like it when fantasy or sci-fi games have well thought out mythology, history, legends, science, magic systems, all the little details that bring it to life and make it feel like a real world. Maybe this shows what I nerd I am, but it's something I really like thinking about and figuring out.

It's also one of the things that disappoints me the most about many fandoms. You have an interesting universe with all sorts of ongoing conflicts, political pressures, changing times, theories about various kinds of magics and sciences, the impact that things like this have on the world...and yet 99% of fanfics is about who's fucking. Great. Just disregard everything interesting about the universe for a generic romance you could get anywhere. <_<

It also really bothers me when lore is done badly, because then it just becomes a technobabble handwave explanation for things that don't make sense, even though the explanation itself raises just as many questions and is never elaborated upon. I don't like it when games, TV shows and movies pretend to have really interesting, deep lore, when really all we're being asked to do is just accept things or assume that it makes sense. I can't assume there's a brilliant explanation if you don't give me one, or give me the pieces of one to put together.

I enjoyed the lore of Dragon Age Origins a good bit. For some time after playing it I often found myself saying "by the Maker" a great deal. I decided to stop playing it for a while after that.

Hmm... Well. I quite like shouting "FOR THE EMPEROR!" while playing the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine demo...

Does that count?

No? Oh, well, then no.

I have always enjoyed large worlds filled with interesting locations, background stories, and characters, makes me feel connected to the world and allows me to relate to it as if it were a realistic place that I could conceivably live in. One of my favorite lore stories in video games is the Metal Gear Solid series, there are just so many numerous background stories and little pieces of trivia that add layer after layer to the world that makes it so fascinating.

It makes a world interesting.

I think my biggest lore-ons are for the Nasuverse (Type-Moon works) and the old World of Darkness.

Naw, I never really liked Data's evil twin brother and...

Huh? Oh. THAT kind of Lore. I see.

I've gotta go with Mass Effect. I really like their take on the whole inter-species culture.

Warhammer Fantasy has some pretty epic lore tying various nations and past together, so much so that even though I don't play any more I'm still interested in reading about the histories of said nations, the Black Library novels are usual pretty sweet as well.

40K lore I quite enjoy, I started reading the Horus Heresy series a while back and really enjoy it. But I don't follow lore in the "THEY'VE CHANGED THINGS KILL THEM!" way.

Hell yeah!

Ace Combat in particular has some of the best lore of any game/movie/book series ever. Everything is extremely well thought out and all of the numbered titles connect. The backgrounds of every game (and actually before and after some games) are incredibly detailed and everything sounds as if it could have really happened in a somewhat sci-fi alternate history.

Yeah, I like lore. Particularly the lore of 40k (Which I really haven't gotten into that much, but from what I've read, it's great) and Fallout (As much as I like 3, it absolutely butchers the lore of the series, just saying. It really should have been either a prequel or reboot.) The Elder Scrolls has some pretty good stuff, so does Mass Effect. Hell, even Halo has got a surprisingly complex universe behind it.

usually lore bores me and i'd rather just play the game and get the immediate story.

BUT there are a few exceptions. such as when warcraft 3 roc/tft came out i loved reading the lore. didnt bother with WoW though.
when i was younger and more stupid i thought the lore of resident evil was interesting, now i know its an incoherent mess.
the history of dragon age (and mass effect) is pretty interesting to me.

No, not in games. I read some of the books in Oblivion, but don't give a single shit about the rich mythology of whatever world I'm in. All I care about is the world.

I dont need it in a game, but it's a nice touch and adds ALOT to the plot and game as a whole

I consider reading random pages of the Warhammer 40K wiki to be fun.

Apart from that, I find the Star Trek lore rather interesting, particularly the inter-species politics. I'm only just now getting into it, but it fascinates me.

There are other areas of lore I like, but they're probably the two main ones.
