Not really. They're just an extra something to do, nothing to spend 50 hours getting and them bragging about to people who don't fucking care.

Damn kids...
Stop reminding me I'm wasting my time trying to get the Platinum trophy in Final Fantasy 13!

But if a game is very very good I'll generally try and complete the sidequests and the extra trophies. Now if only Trapezohedrons would drop faster...

I'm inclined to disagree with you here. Prestige mode allows you to start all over again and can be a lot more fun. When I prestige I begin the climb back up to the top again using a specific weapon type and setting myself specific challenges to achieve before certain ranks. It's all about how you utilise it.

Achievements, if done properly, give you pointers to explore and discover more of the game. Alternatively they give you new challenges to overcome, such as completing an entire level using nought but a knife and some grenades, or not being detected stealing from the government.

Methinks you're not looking at the potential these things offer and only at the bad implementation :p

I'm a bit of a completionist, so if there's a game that I really like then I'll gladly explore every corner of it.

Do these little rewards matter to you? For me, it really only matters if I can actually enjoy the process of 100%ing the game. I had fun getting the platinum trophy for Final Fantasy XIII, beating every track and mission in Mario Kart DS, and currently I'm in the process of getting the platinum trophy for Portal 2.

However, some people tell me I'm wasting my time. I disagree; if I'm enjoying the process of finishing the game with 100% completion, then I'd say I'm getting my money's worth.

How about you? Are trophies/achievements a waste of time or are they worth the effort?
its a pointless gimmick. since 2006 my bio has included

"prestige mode and achievements are pointless"

because they both are. prestige mode is pointless because you lose everything in exchange for a stupid looking badge, and achievements are pointless because all they do is add to a meaningless number.

if rank meant something (like it does in bf2) then it wouldnt be pointless. if achievements could be traded in for something, or unlock special content, then they wouldnt be pointless.

but they just are.

people dont seem to care that they are wasting their time and effort on pointless bullshit.
He said he's enjoying it... what the fuck else do you want?
i dont want anything. im posting in a thread.

since when were gimmicks and enjoyment mutually exclusive?

Call me the cancerous, festering disease that is killing hardcore gaming as we know it - but I quite like them.
Its just something else to do.
Hell, I actually enjoy getting those wee unlocks - but I make it a point of honour to not even look at the achievement list until I have completed the main story of a game.

start what all over again? all it does is lock everything you unlocked so you can unlock it again. its completely pointless.

i did prestige mode once back in cod 4, realised it was horrible, then i didnt do it again in any call of duty game.

"Achievements, if done properly, give you pointers to explore and discover more of the game."

in my experience this is not true. if im going to complete a game, ill do it. if im not, i wont. achievements are just collateral for me.

Yes, very much so. There are a lot of games that I've played more than once only for the achievements, I will constantly go out of my way for achievements and games rarely keep me playing past one playthrough without promising some more gamerscore.

I'm rarely a trophy/achievement whore but it does happen. I only ever really start trying for all the achievements when they are things that I feel I can do, so far I've only got all the achievements for Fable 2 and Oblivion. I had all of them for Dante's Inferno but that was before DLC added new ones.

I don't sit around trying to get every single one, but I do make an effort to get the ones that I know wont be that much of a pain in the ass to get. I like a challenge but not to the point I'm going to rip my hair out. Also depends on how much I like the game. Some games, like the Dragon Age ones, I like, but don't go out of my way for any of them because so often, most are just thrown at me through regular gameplay.

It depends. I usually gauge the achievments a little before trying for them. If they seem pretty reasonable I try for them (Dragon Age Origins is a good example. Bioware boasted about replayability and actually put in achievments which encourage it).

Though if they're stupid "Complete You always die mode in half a minute with 0 deaths" or "play a single level half a million times" (looking at you Gears of War) then I don't bother. If used right they can be a nice way to encourage playing the game in different ways or trying new elements, if used baddly they're just ignored by me.

Occasionally I'll go out of my way for them, especially if I'm looking for an added challenge (the trophy usually associated with a game's hardest difficulty setting is usually my main motivation for trying to beat it). Multiplayer trophies can fuck off, though, because that's basically punishing the people who don't want to play the multiplayer.

I enjoy trophies if I enjoy the game, it's a nice way to get something more from a game that you enjoyed, also I enjoy the "ding" when they pop, especially if it's for something you didn't expect like "kill 13 mice in 5 seconds".

Lately though I have went ahead and got more trophies than I probably would've but that's due to being out of work in a country where I don't speak the language, fills up a chunk of my free time, but overall I think they are a neat little addition when things get stale and you need some time to kill, definitely nothing worth bragging about.

I typically grab all of the achievements for games i really enjoy as a way to extend play-time. (two week fallout-3 basement grind-a-thon)

But on the whole, I really don't care.

EDIT: Plus I love adding games to my completed games list...it makes me feel like a bad-ass...

I'll say the same thing I have in similar threads:

I go out of my way to 100% every bloody game. Chances are, if I bought it, I'll enjoy it. At that point, the Achievements/Trophies are really little more than incentive to squeeze some Michael Bay-sized explosions out of every red cent you paid for it.
I aim to be #1 among my friends, so that also tends to add up.

EDIT:

I know that my gamerscore may say otherwise, but i honestly don't really go for achievements until i play through a game, minus the ones you get for playing through said game. I mean my spring project was to get all of the achievements for fallout 3, i only i did this after i had played through that game umpteen times.
My first playthrough, I enjoy myself. I always mop up afterwards (even if it takes me a year to go back to a game).

I hate it.

I dont give a shit about achievements or trophies. In fact, I wish there was an option to turn them off. Nothing breaks immersion like some stupidly named congratulation popping up when you bring down a boss, or pick flower number 1000.

Because I'm currently between new releases, I'm going through and trying to 100% some of my older games. It's kind of sad that I consider myself an achievement hunter, but I only have 2 completed games, one of which doesn't count (Avatar TLA:TBE).
