I just saw this in the new post list and had to drop in. Are you serious? Is this really something we feel is contributing to the life experience as a whole? Allow me a quick digression into the realm of speculation:
You were sat, bored, at your computer, wondering what thread you could devise to spark witty, intellectual discourse amongst the Escapists horde, something that would make you the toast of the community, held aloft and bourne hence in celbration and victory on the shoulders of the great and the good.
Yet, somehow, the answers alluded you.
Hours had past, slowly ticking by, and these hours became days, days became weeks and weeks became months. Couched in your intellectual stillness, surrounded by the gathered dust and cobwebs, you waited for the day to arrive. Your inspiration, your "Eureka" moment.
Slowly, very slowly, something began to build within the stillness. Small grains of dust began to shift tentatively as the monolith began to stir. Your arms, with glacial speed, raised from their majestic slump at your sides and brought before your eyes a sight you had not beheld in a very long time. And there, in that instant, hanging stumpily to the side of both of your hands, was your muse.
Scholarly, you pondered upon these intriguing items, "Perhaps" you postulated, "their passing resemblance to the other digits would count them as another. Yet again" you riposte, with lighning alacricity, "the functional and slight aesthetic differences may cause them to be classified as a seperate but related appendage" This quandry devoured you, burned in your breast with the passion of a thousand suns. Nights of sleep were lost, you paced wildly around your chair, straining for an answer that would not come. It soon became clear what you had to do.
Eschewing all pretenders to such knowledge, you preceded, via the Information Super Highway, to the greatest collection of learned and scholarly people of which you were aware; the academic dilettantes of the Escapist. Truly, you thought, this is a conundrum of the ages.
Perhaps you were right, perhaps you were wrong, it is not for me to judge. All I can add to this impressive discourse is that I see the thumb as a digit but would not refer to it as a finger. I hope we can now all appreciate what this young man has been through to bring us into this arena of debate, perhaps even to the bleeding edge of knowledge itself. Have we opened a Pandora's Box? Only history can be the judge. Might we...
No, no, I'll say to much...
