No, I don't dislike JRPGs.
I've played JRPGs that do flat-story adaptations to traversing the realms of philosophical/symbolic bullshit. To say they're all the same is ignorant at best, and blind idiocy at worst. Yet, that's the dominant attitude here on the Escapist.

That said, there are still tropes that pop up a little too often for my tastes, or that I flat out dislike.

****
One-note characters: This is typically roster-filler.

It's a character whose sole memorable trait is some quirky or otherwise blunt gimmick that's never given justification. Ilayna from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is one such example. Her gimmick is that she's always hungry. There is maybe, MAYBE one line between two full games that ISN'T related to this trait.
It never evolves or budges from that point; she is literally roster-filler.

Suikoden and Chrono Cross are probably the worst offenders I can think of, but you can find such stock characters in most jrpgs; either as playable characters or NPCs. I hate this trend not only because it's annoying, but since it's a waste of design space.

And unfortunately, if the game is voiced, the cheapest/worst voice-actors/actresses typically get these parts (especially true in Namco-Bandai jrpgs...the "NB-Harpy").

Children Save the World

It slays me when it's always children who are the world's only hope; I'm sorry, but in most conflict, "youthful energy" is no replacement for experience and rational thinking. 13-year old martial arts masters and prodigious mages drive me nuts when they comprise most of the roster.
Oh, but it's OK as long as it's done along with the requisite "Coming of age" story...gag me.

I could cite examples of where these tropes drive me absolutely nuts. So I'll instead show you where they can actually work, why those stories succeed and perhaps you can figure out why the tropes fail by comparison.

Suikoden 2. Focuses on three children/young adults (about 15-17).

Both the protagonist and the antagonist are best friends; not mortal rivals. The coming of age story is implied subtly and not so bluntly hammered as in most stories.

But perhaps most telling is that the conflict actually takes its toll on them as time goes on; both physically and emotionally, as war ought to.

In comparison to the usual application of the trope: where a conflict is a boon in disguise and will enable the child to become a master in their respective field, if not wield powers comparable to a demigod.

For the "Coming of Age" trope that routinely goes hand-in-hand with the Children-Save-the-World trope, there is one instance where this was done excellently.
Infinite Space (for the DS, based on a book about coming of age, incidentally).

You see the protagonist Yuri grow up in a number of ways. He experiences triumph, loss, and learns responsibility the hard way. Without going too deep into the details (really, it's a fantastic story) it sounds like the typical coming of age fare.

But what separates it from the typical coming of age story is that Yuri ACTUALLY GROWS UP for the second half of the game. He actually behaves similar to the "tough guy with a past" trope you normally see in jrpgs, only in this case you have the entire context and backstory for why he acts the way he does. You SEE results; results that drive the story rather than just acting as the catalyst for some future Deus Ex Machina revolving around the power of love, happy memories, "fairy dust" (McGuffin activation) or other such bullshit.

Everyone around him grows up too; which changes the dynamic and tone of the story. It's like Ocarina of Time, but with established characters instead of just an environment.

Pity the combat is so repetitive...

are we talking about JRPG style, IE turn based combat with stupid looking characters, in which case i hate them
or just RPGs from Japan? in which case, i hate most of them with the exception of the first two pokemon generations and Dark Souls

I love jrpgs, to start off. I have friends that love them. If one comes out with hype, I will be pre-ordering it at this second. I also love picking up old used ones as well, to collect the whole set.

What really is the issue is that we are currently in a culture where people in their twenties and below are trained to be nit-picky bastards, to only follow what they love and absolutely despise everything they don't.

The current generation is growing up on ADHD fast-paced shooters above all, and are not wired to look at and appreciate the slower-paced tactical games and jrpgs. It's like playing nothing but basketball and skateboarding, and then being told to go check out scrabble and chess. Jrpgs are trying hard to become more fast-paced, but then you get the original group that loves them complaining and no one wins.

Due to this, and the age of always being plugged into an electronic, band-wagoning is in play. Much like jocks pick on nerds in a way, we have one nitpicking bastard (that grew up only loving one specific thing and hating everything else that's different) focusing their contempt of differences towards jrpgs - which are everything they are steered not to play bundled up in a fun little package. One does it, then their friends think it's cool and do it, then everyone their age and younger follow the monkey syndrome and do it thinking it's 'in'.

And sadly their loud assholery and distaste is heard by the higher-ups, who think due to the noise that jrpgs will never be purchased.

There are really only two things to do:

One is to create a club and attract like-minded people, then make as much possible noise as you can over how much you love jrpgs (over as much possible ground as you can, including multiple high-profile forums and sales websites), discuss the games you play, their characters, etc, and try to start a variable click.

The other is to hide in the shadows and wait until the current craze becomes tired and moves on to other destructive tendencies.

Sadly, another side effect of the current generation is that everyone is a lazy good-for-nothing. So most will do the second.

Wait... so what's "dark fantasy" again?
Dragon Age, Witcher, Game of Thrones, Dark Souls and Valkyria Profile. It seems that dark RPGs is what will make things better since if you can toss a random sex scene out of nowhere along with something Freudian. It will sell enough and keep the insatiable review dogs at bay

Ah, so it's basically a marketing term. In which case, doesn't it just make more sense to slap a "dark fantasy" label on the back of your box, have a Marilyn Manson song in one of your trailers, and make the game you were going to make anyway?

I have a question for any JRPG haters, why do you (well maybe not you but you know the ones) have to vehemently shout out that you hate it? It's perfectly fine to not like a genre especially if you hate it's mechanics and tropes, but why do you call the entire genre is shit because it's not appealing to you?

The OP does a pretty good job of explaining it but it seems like more people answered why they dislike JRPGs rather than why they have the need to tell everyone and anyone who disagrees is wrong. (slight over exaggeration, but again you've probably seen those people. You have the people who think like that about anything but the JRPG bashers seem a lot more common.)

i like OLDER JRPGs.(SNES,PS1 and some PS2) mostly because they weren't totally bankrupt in terms of creativity then.

now? unless it made by Altus or is Demon's/Dark Souls, it gets ignored

You have to admi, the fact they used to do a lot of Dark Fantasy helped. And To be Dark Fantasy they to start growing up and turn their back on childish stuff.

Definitely got nothing against JRPGs here. I played a few back in my youth but I don't think I'd have the patience to sit through one these days, which is a shame since I'll bet there's a load of great stuff I'm missing out on.

Also, since nobody else has mentioned it (which makes me sad), Legend of Dragoon was a fucking awesome game. That pretty much defined my early secondary school years.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh it's really kinda hard to say. I loved the old-school JRPGs (i.e. Final Fantasy 1-6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana...basically everything that Squaresoft USED to be as well as a few other misc. JRPGs), but it just seems like the newer generations of JRPGs are leaving the realm of RPG and just becoming straight up J. By that I mean look at the wardrobes, look at the hairstyles, look at the weapons, look at the settings, etc. Everything looks like it was designed to be a CGI anime...which goes to one of Yahtzee's jabs at Square-Enix "When will all you whiny fans realize that Square-Enix has been trying to tell you for years that they just want to make movies?" or something along those lines.

Could be that I just miss the "classic fantasy" setting as seen in Final Fantasy 1-6, but really I prefer my dialogue in text boxes rather than crappy voice actors making my ears bleed with poorly translated dialogue (I'm looking at you, FFX....>.>). Gimme knights in armor and wizards in robes...not both looking like they got into a naked wrestling match beneath a pile of clothes that have sleeves and paintlegs mysteriously absent and they decided to wear whatever they came out with.

The thing that really makes me laugh is that everybody here hating on jrpgs seem to only be basing this off 1 or 2 developers. Ya know guys, theres waayyyyy more developers of jrpgs here.....

Its like me playing only elderscrolls games and basing them on wprgs, then again wrpgs are trash and garbage. If jrpgs have horribly told stories, wprgs have no stories at all, no real main narrative. Just pointless side quests that contribute exactly jack shit.

Oh my god i hate wrpgs....

Also everyone who's hating is making me feel like an ultimate bad ass, i import a lot of Super hard Jrpgs that don't come out here and i rarely if at all grind, and yet you guys are saying you gotta grind for like 10 hours in what Disgaea? Final fantasy?

AHAHAHAHAHA, oh my this is priceless....

I've kind of hated JRPG's ever since I got a free copy of Dragon Warrior with my subscription to Nintendo Power all those years ago.

I got the game, put it in, played for a while, grew to hate it.
It'd sit on my games shelf, only to be put in about once a year as I'd go "Why do I never play this one again?" and rediscover the fresh hell of how much I hated that game.

I tried a few more over the years, I admit mostly the big 'acclaimed' ones.

Now I'll say I freaking LOVE Kingdom Hearts, but that's the only JRPG(s) I ever liked.
I tried demo's of most that have them on the PS3 and.... I still just don't like them.

I'm anxiously awaiting them to FINALLY make the third one. Especially since I don't own any portable systems and thus haven't been able to play any new KH since freaking 2006!

Something about turn-based combat just bristles me.

Note this is not to BASH JRPG's or JRPG fans.
I'm a big believer in "to each his own" and "just cause I don't like it, doesn't mean it sucks"

I don't think JRPG's suck.
I just know they're a genre I don't like.
Just like I know I don't like most Country or Rap, or any movie that involves "Big city person goes to the small town" plots.

Doesn't mean "They all suck" it means "it's not my style"

The same reason this guy says all Wrpgs suck.

Actually, I've been craving a JRPG lately. Granted, there are a lot of bad ones out there, I mean a LOOOOOOT of bad ones. But the good ones are so damn good for me that I can look over the rest of the genre's mistakes. I play JRPGs with three priorities: Deep, three-dimensional characters, tactical combat that makes you think about your decisions before you make them, and an interesting world that is wide open for you to explore. (Secondary concerns are a good soundtrack, a job system and ALL TEH PHAT LOOTZ)

When I first played Final Fantasy 7, I was hooked. I know, it's EVERYONE'S fallback in this argument, but there's a reason for that. From there I found the Suikoden series, Kingdom Hearts, Persona, and a little PS1-era gem that went by the name of Arc The Lad. All of those are examples of GOOD JRPGs that have at least four or five of the six items I listed above. Bad ones, on the other hand... well, this post isn't really about those. But I will say that running down a corridor for 60+ hours is not my idea of a fun time and leave it at that.

I don't dislike jRPGs. I like them better than wRPGs. I don't have anything against wRPGs, by the way. Despite liking jRPGs a little better, I have a lot of love for classic wRPGs. And I certainly like the genre better than the first person shooter.

Which is depressing, given how the gaming community is like right now.

Oh, and topic ratio about wRPGs versus ever other genre of video game here. I had no idea when I signed up here, that there would be so many Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect topics in comparison to everything else.

Nice to see that people come out of hiding or whatever to say they like the genre whenever one of these topics pop up. Feels good to have others of similar taste around. I wish we could get some topics going like this a little more often. And about a specific game, not just the "jRPG".

I don't dislike JRPGs in general. How could I? I practically grew up on them. No, I hate what JRPGs have become.

This is a vastly unpopular opinion, but to me, a game is not a real RPG if it does not have turn-based combat and a heavy emphasis on number-crunching. That's partially why I get irritated when people call Mass Effect an RPG- to me, it isn't. It's an action game with some stats in it.

Even Final Fantasy, once the bastion of old-school JRPG conventions, has strayed from the path, trading substance for style and ditching compelling gameplay for overly dramatic visuals and excessively long animations.
really? are you trolling or something, or are you a robot? I can understand liking turn-based combat, even if i dislike it personally, but number-crunching? seriously? different strokes i suppose...

As to my own opinions on the genre, i don't vehemently hate JRPGs, but i do not enjoy turn-based combat, and I prefer somewhat realistic action. I really like some of their stories and settings, but i don't like giant-ass-sword Rochambeau. To use an anime analogy, i prefer Cowboy Bebop to Naruto.

In addition, the JRPG's that I have played have almost no player-controlled character mobility. While this is not specific to the genre, playing assassin's creed has made me distinctly aware of such things.

ALSO: Are the legend of zelda games JRPGs?

I guess that disliking math since 2nd grade just makes it hard for me to comprehend one who enjoys it. It is like taste in music: the only way to make someone agree with you is with brainwashing!

...or maybe you are a robot, programmed to think that you're a human...
