Ok so I hate when people say they don't like a movie because the main character dies in the end ie. donnie darko, drag me to hell, the mist kinda (sorry spoiler alert). I've heard so many people say they don't like the movie because of this reason, but I dont get it it makes the movie better I think because the hero doesnt alway prevail I mean geeze the 9 year old kid I babysit said this to me.
So my question is do you dislike movies that kill the main character or if youlike them and why.

A movie is basically a story. In some stories, the main character dies. If anything I complain when they dont die. Like WALL.E. That movie wouldve been more epic if he just kept doing what he was always programmed to do.

Darth Vader (or Anakin) was arguably the main character for the whole Star Wars saga. And he died at the end and they are still my most favorite movies

First, no, I don't dislike them. In fact, Donnie Darko is one of my favorite movies. I don't think it always makes a movie better, and in some cases can be very stupid and pointless and just done for gasps, but if done right it makes for a good ending.

Second, and this is really minor, Donnie did kind of prevail. He saved everyone else by sacrificing himself. At the end, he knew that's what had to happen, so he did it. I call that prevailing.

Third, maybe add a spoiler warning to your thread name for those who haven't seen the movies we may be talking about?

I think it's worse when you think the main character is dead but then comes back right at the very end. In fact that applies to all characters of the movie, only the villian should be able to get away with that.

I don't really mind, just as long as the movie is good.

Psycho is a great example.

i like em better when the main character dies... and in the case of Donnie Darko, him dying was him prevailing, sorta.

Yes I'm one of the seven people that liked them. Hell I watched Ep III like 6 times in theaters

Yeah, but Pixar would have been shut down because of all the hate mail from people who can't handle plot-twists.

Often I think the movies are in some way validated when the main character is killed off. On occasion it's annoying, but in some ways it truly says that this is the end of the story.
