Ok so I hate when people say they don't like a movie because the main character dies in the end ie. donnie darko, drag me to hell, the mist kinda (sorry spoiler alert). I've heard so many people say they don't like the movie because of this reason, but I dont get it it makes the movie better I think because the hero doesnt alway prevail I mean geeze the 9 year old kid I babysit said this to me.
So my question is do you dislike movies that kill the main character or if youlike them and why.
I think the real question is do the parents of the 9-year old you babysit know s/he's watching Drag Me To Hell?*

I think it depends on the film - some films are great with the main character dying, Sin City being an example. Marv and Callahan**'s deaths are brilliant, add closure and bring so much to the characters. Some films do it to be "edgy", and these are the ones that fail miserably - Wash didn't need to die in Serenity. Joss Wheadon didn't need to point out that crash landing on a planet swarming with two factions who both want you dead is dangerous.

*Yes, I'm very aware you didn't mean you sat down him/her and made them watch Drag Me To Hell, but it implied it, so I ran with it for the joke.

** It's been a looooooooooong time since I saw it and IMDB is playing up. I THINK it's Callahan? Bruce Willis' character.

Bad ending are fine, but I must admit that they're a bit of a downer. Particularly Drag Me to Hell in my opinion (still liked the movie though). I guess that's just because I feel that the ***** that cursed her was the one who deserved to end up in hell. Oh well, maybe she did anyway when she died.

I can handle it so long as it is a good movie.

Horror movies have the habit of having the main character survive until either a sequel happens or until the very last few minutes of the film.

No, it's not edgy and it doesn't give me that, "Evil never dies!" feeling that you intended, film makers. All it does is make me wonder why I watched a ninety five minute backstory to your inevitable low-budget sequel, only to watch the monster in question live yet again while our perky-nippled protagonists are doomed.

Of course, there are exceptions.

I write on my spare time, and sometimes killing the main character helps the story along

Honestly, it can make the movie better if a significant character (or the main character) dies. Look at Blade Runner. In the theater version, there is a lame voice over by Harrison Ford explaining how his girlfriend android doesn't have an expiration date. Compared to the director's cut, that is fucking lame! What a cop out ending.

My mom doesn't like movies if they are at all dark. I disagree with a passion, but she loves hollywood happy endings. Bahhumbug I say!

It depends on the movie. But hey, come on: sometimes people die. Especially if they spend a significant portion of time dodging explosions, or zombies, or exploding zombies.

Only one time did I care when they killed a main character at the end was No Country for Old Men and that was shit anyway (And I liked the first 6 Star Wars' as well, Clone Wars was a steaming pile of shit that's been eaten by some weirdo and shat out again with a few shitty alterations)

Darth Vader (or Anakin) was arguably the main character for the whole Star Wars saga. And he died at the end and they are still my most favorite movies
D... do you even like the prequel trilogy?
Yes I'm one of the seven people that liked them. Hell I watched Ep III like 6 times in theaters
Finally, I find someone else that enjoyed them! *high five*

Bet you weren't expecting that XD

Not even joking. I love all six movies.
You too? High five!

l think as long as there is a reason like in donnie darko and they don't use it as an excuse to spend the rest of the movie trying to revive him *cough*Transformers 2*cough* then yes it makes the movie more enjoyable

I think that killing the main character is a nice twist since everyone's expecting him or her to live. Like, whenever I'm watching a suspense film I get really into it and then realize, "Oh it's the main character. He'll get out of this just fine."

i don't care as long as it fits the story, i mean take I am Legend, him dying at the end was needed, if he lived it would have been too cheesy and crappy

the books been out for 50 years and there's 3 versions of the movies, it's not a spoiler

I find the reserve insulting actually. All those movies where the 'hero' is put into positions where even the most elite of SAS officers would shit themselves. Put into situations where even god would be waiting for all that hurt. The hero just... walks out of it, without even a scratch.

BS!...

It is a insult to all rational and intelegent thought if you can NOT write a script that doesn't require a immortal hero or a dues-ex. In many scripts the hero would find themselves dead after a 10th of what they are thrown through. If they die at those points then I find myself have to protect said movie for being a gem of reality based insite.
