In my eyes my first world problems come before someone that I don't know in a third world country, no matter how bad they have it.

Not really. The starving kids in Africa was a 90s problem and is very outdated. There is a new Africa emerging with schools, people who own mobile phones, hospitals etc. Africa has a new middle class.

Food welfare is not a good solution either. Africa has a terrible culture of dependency and laziness. People in Africa need training and education to support their newly acquired skills. For example, at hospitals the nurses there to do not monitor the patient, they just copy the stats left by previous nurses. Africa has this kind of attitude to work as in, it can be done tomorrow or it can be done half-way. These problems need training.

I donate money to charities in Africa who deal with rape victims and I would like to do more work in Africa when I have more qualifications and experience (Africa does NOT need students doing monkey work....people can do that for themselves. Africa needs professionals with experience). I think rape is a more prevalent problem than starvation.

Plus abortion and birth control are better options for preventing starvation. Sorry of that sounds harsh but Africa has an endemic of rape, which leads to unwanted pregnancy which leads to another mouth to feed. Im not challenging the right of people to have kids, I am saying that women should have a right to decide HOW many kinds they want.

Some countries in Africa do have a food crises to be fair, but donating food aid is not a solution. There is too much corruption in Africa (some food aid is re-sold on the streets at extortionate prices for example....grrr.....).

It's not my problem, nor do I know anything about it.

Now, if my government, or at least part of it, who have people whose jobs involve knowing what the situation is really like and doing something about it decide that tax money should be spent on foreign aid on useful things, that's fine, I have no objection to that.

Most individuals don't have any way of really understanding the situation, whether the chairty would actually help things etc, so I don't thing they should be the people behind such things.

I empathize with anyone in crappy conditions. That said, I prefer to make a difference in my own community with my money and time.

I feel sad for them, but I can't really do anything about it. I can donate all I want, all that happens is their corrupt governments take all the money, all the aid, all the supplies I send to them, so I am not really helping them that way.

They need to help themselves, that's what is really the problem. The majority has sort of given up.

Why I would have to say "oh dear".

It's sad but there's nothing really I can do so to speak, I can just get myself fed while on a uni course :/
Excellent choice sir! I love Adam Curtis' documentaries.
To be honest I don't really think about it. If I see an advert, then yeah of course I feel sad. However, sometimes it seems we forget that the rest of the world has problems too.

There are ways you can give to charity even if you don't have much to give - iodine pills, vaccinations, and mosquito nets are cheap but save and/or change lives.

It's not my problem. Of course, I'm aware that it's a terrible way to live, but there it isn't my fault and any attempt I make to help is the equivalent of throwing a pebble in a canyon. I don't feel bad anymore, because there's no point in doing so.

Africa needs cheap HIV/AIDS treatment as well, and the removal and incarceration of Joseph Kony.

Very true that you should be careful where money goes. Médecins Sans Frontières and Oxfam are two charities that are worth supporting, my wife and I make an annual donation to them. Amnesty International also get a donation from us as well.

I do feel really bad but there's nothing I can really do. I only earn enough for me to get by and I'll be earning even less when I start univeristy. In several years I hope to be in a better situation where I can sponcer a child or two and maybe even go to Africa to do some volunteer work. Right now though I've gotta sort my own life out before I can help theirs.

Yes, I care. I'd donate money, but the truth is I don't think it does any good. There isn't a shortage of money being donated, it's just all going to weapons and ammo in the end, to fuel an endless civil war.

Do I feel bad about it? Of course.

Do I feel guilty about it? Not at all.

I'm the kind of person who'll get donate happy. I spend money on people that I don't often have. I volunteer, so I really never have any feelings that I don't do my part (everyone should try to volunteer if they have a bit too much free time).

I'm honestly considering going down to Kenya to help out a family that does work there. Asking someone to feel bad about that shit is ridiculous. If you're drive is to help out, than spend less time guilt tripping people into donating money, and go over there and do something about it.

well, frankly no i dont care.
As a few people have mentioned I too have a few personal matters that i would rather deal with.
Lets fix our own backyard before trying to fix the neighbors as it were.

Plus if i was to be truly cold hearted the worlds pretty over populated already.

Not really actually.

The practice of giving money straight to the country's it's affecting sort of died out around Bush's first term. If you donate to the Red Cross, the money is going to the Red Cross. The governments giving money to other country's really was coming straight out of tax payer dollars, no one really donated to them. The countries with the big Civil Wars are the one's that aren't allowing donation charities to even get in.

Send money to Africa? Watch it, or anything it's used for, be claimed by some local African warlord, or their exceedingly corrupt government officials, or any of that shite.
Likewise, why exactly would you be sending money to whatever African government in the first place? That's a ridiculous thought in the first place.

Charity organizations that actually do charity should be your first thought.

My questions for you are:
Do you care about the starving kids in Africa? Why?
Do you actually do anything about it? Why?
No. Because I can't do anything about it.

I really don't care or feel bad. Because I'm not poor. And I'm not hungry. And I'm them. Therefore, it's of no concern to me

Things will probably get better for the ones that manage to survive after the majority of the warring powers in the country exhaust all their resources, draw in other countries, engage in an even bloodier trans-continental war, kill each other off and be forced to work together just to survive and eventually rebuild whatever's left of Africa.

The place is messed up, no question there.

But, anyone who wants to tug on my heartstrings with it, can go stick it where the sun don't shine. And airing "give us money" ads starring "the poor children of Africa" is no way to fix the place.
Maybe I would be more encouraged to donate to charities if they actually sent the money where it needs to go. It either goes to the government (bad) or goes toward building schools in an area that has no supply of clean water. I mean, what the fuck.
Yeah that's exactly how I feel about it....

Plus I really don't trust charities these days....
