...Personally I find it really awkward to go to a restaurant or the movies by myself.

I'm not entirely sure why.

I tend to miss a lot of movies in the movie theaters I would otherwise have seen there instead of on DVD.

Even McDonald's I just tend to use the drive through or get things to go.

Are there places you guys tend not to go without others? Or conversely, do you prefer to go to a lot of places by yourself?

I understand going to a restaurant or even the movies, because they are designed for a party. Going alone, everyone will look at you and make a judgement. So I agree that it is really awkward to go to those places alone.

I don't get the mcdonalds one though, you just go in for a sec to get food. Do you also feel awkward grocery shopping?

I actually enjoy alone time, like walking the dog through a park or something. But ya, any places designed for more social interaction can get awkward when you are alone. I try not to think about what others think about me, but it is tough.

I meant specifically eating there. There are usually a lot of parents and kids around together, so I just feel out of place sitting around eating my big mac or whatever.

I mean to some extent, I shouldn't. It's fucking Mcdonald's, but still XD

OK, fair enough. I always thought of mcdonalds as more of a treat, whereas going to a real restaurant people would think you are a loser or something.

Why would you not go to the cinema alone? You're (ideally) not going to converse or interact with the other person at all. You're going to see a film.

OT: No. I'll go wherever I need to go regardless of who's with me. I wouldn't say I necessarily prefer it, but it's more convenient.

Movies and restaurants for myself as well. Also, I really don't like going to places I've never been before/never really went to by myself. Just freaks me out too much.

I refuse to see movies alone. I know lots of people do it, and most people are going to be too wrapped up in the movie/making out to even notice, but it would still make me feel like a loser. As for restaurants, I'll go to, like, a fast food place or a cafe alone, but not to a sit-down place.

When I go to the mall to just hang out or kill time, I always go with friends, but when I actually go to buy something, I go alone. No one is going to want to spend an hour and a half standing there while I pick out pants.

I go to the movies by myself all the time, and I'll go to restaurants by myself if they're pretty casual/ have a bar.

The one that gets weirdest for me is concerts, mainly because my style and musical tastes mesh awkwardly and I don't want to be the awkward semi-preppy guy alone at the hardcore show. At the same time, as I have no friends with similar music tastes, if I don't go alone to concerts, then I probably won't be going to concerts at all. It's a weird balance.

I used to have the same awkwardness about venturing into several destinations solo until I realized that "I'm an adult, and I can do whatever I want!"

Granted, going to certain places or events with others makes the experience more memorable, but if I want to see a movie that no one in my family is interested in or all my friends are busy, why not go by yourself? You could still go see it again later with others if you really enjoy it.

Clothing stores.

They just make me feel totally self conscience, like everyone in there can tell I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.

I can relate. To make things worse, a guy/girl approaches you and goes "good evening sir, can I help you?" To which I respond with a "uh.... uh....... I'm just looking, thank you" I don't know, I just feel bad having to ask for their help. I wish I could just grab some pants, drop the cash right there and leave.

Also, I go to the movies forever alone all the time, I never think about it, but now I feel bad, and I'm left wondering if anyone there notices "hey, it's that guy again, he's always by himself". Thanks OP.

The only place that I don't go in by myself is in a restuarant (not fast foods sort of restuarant). I just got accustom to going there with friend or family who I let them handling selecting meals and tips. Ok sure I can do that by myself (doing that isn't exactly hard) but it does feel awkward being in a room of people chatting among themselves and you're on your own bing quiet.

Other than that I can go in places bymyself with no problem (beside with the cinema, everyone will be staring at the screen, not the lonely you).

I don't go to restaurants by myself but I get lunch or coffee in cafe's by myself all of the time.

I love doing it when I have a book that I want to read.

I prefer clothes shopping by myself because I can take quite a long time so I wouldn't inflict that on anyone!

I've only been to the cinema by myself once and that was to see The Emperor's New Groove.

I always go to the movies by myself. I try to make sure to pick a time when as few people as possible will be watching. And I like going to a restaurant by msyelf and bringing a book to read.

I know, I didn't say it was reasonable, just that I feel weird doing it XD

Everything except movies and hospitals for me... The first time I actually got a chance to go to the movies by myself was to see the movie Bridesmaids... (Most of the females that went into the movie theater glanced at me with such confusion that I tried not to laugh thinking about it...) And for hospitals, I mostly go there with headphones on anyway... It's like the opening to Persona 3 as I walk through that place most of the time...

OT: Going back to any of my old schools just to check up on the current faculty... The current students at any of those schools tend to stare blankly at me as I pass by them EVERY TIME... (It's like they're waiting for me to try to mug them or something... So stereotypical... Must be the beard...)

I actually prefer to go to the movies solo. No chance of people talking to you half way through, no one stealing your popcorn, empty seats on both sides for maximum snack storage. But then again I've never paid any attention to what strangers think of me, I go gracery shopping in my pajamas because it's comfortable and if you don't like me just because you don't like the pants I wear when I pick out which pasta sauce to buy, well then, fuck you buddy.

Edit: forgot to mention the best bit, no fighting over/awkwardly sharing arm rests!

Obviously any place I've never been to before. Like a new clothing store, restaurant, etc. I even felt awkward going to the DMV. Basically, any place that's new to me and it makes it very obvious I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. I hate looking like an idiot, because typically I'm not, it's just everyone seems to assume I'm an idiot when I don't know what to do immediately. Those instances where there's multiple lines and I don't know which one to stand in first? Gah, I HATE those moments. Then you need to go "Yeah, hi, umm...uh...is, is this the right line?" and I always assume they hear "Uhh, durr, I liek candy. I r stand here?"

Also, hospitals. Doesn't matter what I'm there for. It's always eerily quiet and everyone looks like they're dying or already dead.
