Do you feel ill at ease going certain places yourself?

Restaurants, mostly the "fancy" ones. My job requires me to move around the country, so I basically have to eat alone. Now, in many restaurants where there is a bar (not necessarily one with alcohol), you can easily pull off an "out of towner" feel to outsiders so they wont give you a second glance. Also, its easier to get lost in the crowd in the bar portion of the restaurant compared to sitting at a table by yourself.

My sister has a similar problem. There are many great restaurants she would like to eat at more, but is too embarrassed to eat there alone (since her friends are having kids, she doesn't get many opportunities to eat with others)

I Would also say bars but....I don't really have any desire to go there anymore. But yea, drinking by yourself in a bar is kinda lame.

Well, I have no social skills, and I am a snarky, condescending person by nature, so... everywhere, I suppose. I only ever thank cashiers, greet people I know when they pass, and if someone asks me a yes or no question, I'll either shake my head or nod.

I need help.

Wow, going somewhere alone... I have two small children and if I get to go the bathroom alone it's a miracle. It's a treat for me to wander to a local cafe, grab a coffee and read a book for an hour. I love to go places on my own!

I don't really have a place that I won't go to by myself, especially if I have a good book or bring my Nintendo DS or 3DS with me. However, for a place like a pub or a restaurant, I would prefer to go with a friend or a relative, as I am more of a social drinker, and I find it more enjoyable to have company, but I like going to the cinema by myself.

I've never gone to the movies by myself before, but I may do in future in spite of potentially looking like a sad-act (probably better to go in for a mignight screening or something). I wouldn't go to a restaurant/bar/club on my own, though I probably wouldn't be too phased about eating alone at a McDonald's or Subway or something. Otherwise, I guess aside from dark alley's and loud/dodgy evening streets, I just kind of feel awkward among large crowds in general unless I'm with some friends. I don't really have a problem per se walking around city centres alone, but it just makes me feel pretty uncomfortable. I'm not much of a city person I guess. Or a people person. I need to get out more. XD

I go restaurants, movies, fast food and basically any place alone very comfortably, but then I'm in china and people here tend to keep to themselves and not judge people openly. Or maybe I just don't give a fuck what other people think.

I go to fancy restaurants for steaks and red wine with slippers and t-shirt and I feel fine. You people gotta start living for yourself and not strangers you don't even know.

I'm not entirely sure why.

I tend to miss a lot of movies in the movie theaters I would otherwise have seen there instead of on DVD.

Even McDonald's I just tend to use the drive through or get things to go.

Are there places you guys tend not to go without others? Or conversely, do you prefer to go to a lot of places by yourself?
I, too, find movies awkward when I go by myself. Totally illogical, I know, but I do. And I find restaurants awkward to a point - if it's a nice restaurant, I'll won't go by myself, but if it's a fast food place, I usually sit in a booth with my legs up and read on my kindle as I snack.

Another place I'm ill-at-ease going to by myself? Bars. Not that I feel like I'm being judged, but because then I have no one to S.O.S. to, should some guy get a little too insistent.

I recently got into Magic; The Gathering and went to my first ever Friday Night Magic event at my local Waterstones. MAN that was wierd... for about the first half an hour. As soon as you get talking to people and playing a few games it becomes distinctly less wierd. I still haven't been back to another though, but that's mainly due to work being a *****.

I have no problem going to cinemas alone. I figure, I'm there to see a movie that I really want to see, not for the social experiance, in that sense it's no different than picking up a new dvd and going home to watch it.

I don't even like watching most movies on my own at home let alone in a cinema. I mean I do it all the time for my favourite movies, eg LOTR on loop, but not new films. I only watch comedies with others as their laughter makes it funnier for me, and we can share in the joke. Same goes for horror movies. They aren't as funny if someone isn't with me to take the piss out of the rehashed unoriginal nature of the movie (The Conjuring was the funniest movie I have seen this year).

Costco, Walmart, Sams Club or a gaming shop/arcade.

First three are crowded and everyone's shoving each other. Then there's people who let their kids roam free. Hate it so much.

Gaming shops/arcades usually have those elitist gamers who try and pick on the newcomer to make sure that they're purifying the games. Or some BS excuse.
