Does any part of you feel silly at all when playing Dragon Age for an example and having to romance characters? Would you do it if you didn't have to do it?

Not really, romances have been a part of RPGs, at least Western RPGs(haven't played a lot of JRGPs) for a some time now and it doesn't look like it's anywhere. It's nice to have the option to do it and a lot of times it's a way of getting to know that person really well, since a lot of the characters open up more, once you romance them and make them "vulnerable". I do it for that reason, the whole sex part, especially in Dragon Age felt stiff and awkward and whenever I choose to romance someone, when I play it, I just skip over that part and move on to the conversation.

Also, as a note, you don't *have* it's an option, not a requirement. I haven't played any RPG, where you're forced to romance someone. It's like a side-quest that doesn't give any extra xp, but adds something to the character.

I don't think silly is the right word ;)

Seriously though, it's not that I feel the need to do it if the option's there, and I certainly don't miss it if it's not there, but it's always a kind of funny aside to the game. Especially in Dragon Age, where the tender romance between you and Morrigan is ruined by the questions "Why did Morrigan take off her clothes, then find a bra she clearly hadn't been wearing and put it on?" and "Does someone need to go down to Bioware and explain to them the birds and the bees?"

Well, you don't have to =) But imagining that you did, I would still do it if the characters had a personality - fortunately for Dragon Age, the personalities and the voice acting are(IMO) excellent.
The problem I strike is that the actual romance parts tend to look a little goofy, mostly because of the uncanny valley, mechanical puppet factor of the *animations*.

Here is a different question. Do you ever feel any kind of attachment to fictional characters? Are there characters from books, TV shows, or video games that you really, really did not like being killed, or were sad about when they died? If so, then engaging in optional romances is not so strange. If no, then books, TV, movies and video games must not be that interesting.
Me personally, no, not that strange. The sex part when they do show it does enter the uncanny valley and make me feel strange, but everything up to that is still not bad.

I play romance-oriented visual novels, and I play or have played two or three dating sims. Assuming I'm immersed in the story, I don't feel silly at all, even in the vanishingly rare cases I feel my own stirrings of romantic feeling...and if I'm not immersed, I'm not feeling anything I'd consider silly, anyway.

Admittedly, I haven't played Dragon Age, but I did wind up growing rather close to Annah in Planescape Torment, which I assume would count. No silliness at all.

I tend to avoid video game romance whenever possible, the one exception being Persona 4. It's not that I feel silly, I'm just not one for love stories. So if I have the option, I ignore it.

Not really. I never forget that it's a game and I usually just do what I want in RPGs. Although I do feel a little silly when I have to meet certain requirements to romance an NPC in some games.

The silliness only really kicks in when you find yourself grinding. E.g., the Fable and GTA series, where you have to go through so much tedium in the hope of gaining some kind of benefit from maxing out the relationship bar.

Sometimes yes. It depends on how well it's done. For example, as much as I love Mass Effect 2, I always found it kind of silly that damn near everyone on your crew was romanceable and had romantic tension with Shepard. It's like, what if I just see them as a friend? I also often really don't like forced romances, ones you HAVE to pursue no matter what in the game, whether you like it or not.

I like having the options of getting to know various characters better, and it's not like it's me romancing the character, it's my character romancing the character, so, yeah, I don't feel weird about it. Nothing in DA or ME forces me to romance anyone, and in ME2 I didn't in most playthroughs, so I never felt pressured into having to romance someone.

No. Sometimes the romances are silly, but I never feel silly for playing the game that way. I actually dislike it more when I have to play out a game that has a forced romance, like with Yuna and Tidus in FFX, than one where I have some control.

But we don't have to do it already and yet we still do it. No I don't feel silly about it, I mean if I'm going to pretend to go kill a dragon I might as well pretend I like the wench for more than a one night stand.

I don't even feel silly imagining myself romancing characters. If I find them romancable, I'll romance them somehow.

Preferably with me being shirtless. I think I'd look better shirtless. And with a big bushy moustache I could twirl. And like a million roses behind me flowing down a waterfall.

Not very much, as long as its done well. There is a lot of components that need to work (for example, Fallout 3/Vegas' dead-eyed uncanny valley made it difficult to care at some points), but a successful game makes it fun.

Hey, until Bioware can invent a romance that feels less silly, and I've played some other RPG with romance to compare BioMance to...I feel silly.

Not really sometimes I get rather attached to them like my family in fable 2 and my dog, may have been busy and had 6 kids with my husband didn't want them to go nor my dog was so sad :<

depends it's all pretend and if it works for the character you are pretending to be why not
