Do you feel that Assassin's Creed isn't stealthy enough?

Before I begin I must let you know that I only played ACII, but I'm thinking about picking up Bromance. I mean Brohood. I loved Assassin's Creed II. The parkour gameplay was great, the quests were for the most part nice and varied and the Assassin Tombs were some of the best platforming levels I have seen this generation. The one thing that bugged me the most that the game's focus wasn't on stealth (you know, like an assassin), but rather on action and it seemed that it was easier to just slaughter your way in and out of every situation. I was always of the opinion that the best assassin didn't have to kill anyone except for their main target, but this game just took a shit on that notion and said "here's your stealth assassin, dipshit". But that didn't stop me from trying to be stealthy nevertheless, but the game's design crushed that on most of the main quests, including the last one where the game requires you to be stealthy.

I'm wondering if any of you Esapists feel the same way.

I've always felt that the AC series never punished me enough for being discovered. When you can take wave after wave of guards without any real trouble, your game needs tweaking.

You'll be happy to know that there are plenty of missions in Brotherhood in which not being detected is either mandatory or as part of a special objective.

It is surprising how this guy can stand menacingly on top of rooftops, but no-one ever looks up, to see him silhoetted and shoot-able, unless they are already up there.

You should try the Hitman series sometime. If a 6'5" white man masquerading as a 5' Malaysian man isn't stealth, I don't know what is.

Stealth is a hard thing to manage, and no series has quite gotten it right. The computer always knows where you are at, and is only pretending not to.

It was fun being stealthy when you were able to, but yeah, it didn't punish you enough for fucking up. Brotherhood puts a little more emphasis on it, but not anything crazy.

Yeah, the games are becoming way too easy. That's my only problem with the series, really. They should have made it hard, like "2 hits kill you" or something, then it would be much better, and also make a slightly more dynamic system for using environmental objects as hiding places(leaning against walls and such classics).

being someone who has played Brotherhood, im happy to let you know that stealth is used ALOT more in AC:B.

the handful of missions involving Leo's War machines make you HAVE to stay undetected, and they way the missions work there are 2 ways to complete a mission; 50% sync or 100%, to get 100% sync with Ezio for a particular mission an additional challenge is added, A LOT of the time the extra objective will be to either only kill the assassination target and/or stay undetected.

so being stealthy is rewarded in Brotherhood a lot more than AC2

I like it. I wasn't really expecting a stealth game. I was expecting a runny-jumpy-climby action game and that's what I got. If you're expecting stealth I can see why you're disappointed.

Nah, I'm happy with the level of stealthy. With proper planning, you can sneak right in, killing a few guards along the way, Claiming your mark, then confidently strolling out, as if nothing were wrong.

I've only played the first one, and we all know the flaws in that one.

As for your (sort of) question, it isn't really stealthy. If you're discovered just dodge/counter until everything dies.

Then again, you don't technically need stealth to be an assassin. As long as you are one person/a small group/anything short of an army, and you kill somebody important, you're an assassin.

I feel that the Assasin's Creed dresscode is something of a laugh. You walk around in plain sight wearing clothing that would make you seem just a tad suspicious. Not to toot the ninja horn too loudly, but wearing black and attacking at midnight makes more sense. Or, even better! A REAL ninja! A simple peasant using improvised weapons and dressing not-at-all out of place would be effective.

The first game actually forced you to be somewhat more stealthy as combat was trickier (enemies would grab you and throw you around, you could be stunned, NO FUCKING POTIONS), and you actually felt better getting to your tagert silently. Oddly enough, ac2 added new stealth elements, but you rarely had to use them.

Considering the book the games were partially inspired by involved assassins who would kill only their target and then wait to be killed, I think the stealth element is just about right.

While you don't ever NEED to stealth(well in Brotherhood you do sometimes) stealthing is very possible, and that's how I play the games anyway. I've made no-detection runs in #2, but in #1 that's harder because you can't sneak up on the assassination targets very easily and when you do the whole city finds out. You just need to be good at blending and knife-throwing. In Brotherhood, the crossbow makes stealth almost TOO easy. See a guard's attention bar filling? A crossbow bolt will shut him up! Knives somehow make guards detect you before they die(glitch maybe?) but I've taken out an entire company of guards with the crossbow without being seen. Like MGS4, you can choose either stealth or combat, but they're both there and both fully fleshed-out.

Um... what?

Yes stealth, but there's no mention of originating in a book or waiting to be killed... they left dire warnings once, then killed if the warning was ignored. They were known for rarely ever being detected, not for dying.

Not exactly canon in-game, but I wore Ezio's Florentine garb for most of Brotherhood. Whenever I wasn't dressed VERY suspiciously as Raiden. Time paradox! But yeah, the default garb, no matter what color you dye it, does scream either "costume party" or "really rich dude with something to hide"

Except the book the original was inspired by is Alamut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alamut_(1938_novel)) and they do just that - because they are promised Heaven if they die in the line of duty.

The novel was also the inspiration for the video game Assassin's Creed.[2]
During their demanding training, they come to be convinced that they shall go to heaven immediately after their death if they die in the line of duty.
I'd know, since it's the only reason I've ever even heard of the book.

Stealth isn't really all that fun for me. If all it takes for me to have to replay the last 30 minutes is a guy looking behind him, or up, or whichever direction, that feels fairly lame. I'm glad the AC series isn't very stealthy.
